I am totally looking forward to the winter here.
I don't know if North Dakota had this, but the bad thing I heard about KS winters was near constant wind. Relentless, make-you-go-crazy, kind of wind.

Pish-tosh i say to that. :) Both nd and west texas had crazy amounts of wind. I'll let you know if it's any worse here, but short of tornadoes i rather doubt it. Kansas has more hills and trees than either of those places, actually, so it might even be a little better.

are you in Wichita now? my brother and his family live there. :) and their winter weather always winds up being worse than what manages to make it into missouri.

Zona, be careful you don't fall into prairie driver syndrome. In Lower Mainland BC there are two type of vehicles we see filling the ditches when it snows half an inch: 4x4s and prairie license plates. They scoff at our small amount of snow and ice, and don't realise that it's a completely different kind of snow and so they go sliding into the ditches. (That said, I don't know what kind of snow and ice Kansas might get, but it's something to be wary of just in case!)

Today has been my perfect weather day. In the 50s last night and 70s today, clear and sunny and not humid. Wonderful.

Dear Ike,

Way to ruin my weekend.

The stupid hurricane has completely botched all my weekend plans. The party the 2VMs throw for the 1VMs after our first test is cancelled. Which means I won't get to meet my friend's fiance. My friend from home coming to visit me this weekend is also cancelled.

On the upside, I don't have class tomorrow.

The river's flooded again. I can't go for runs along the trail because there is no trail.

It's been rainy here.

I was at the playground today and could not get enough of the whole atmosphere created by the weather. Sunny, but not hot. Breezy enough to stir the tree branches and make it comfortable to be out.

The only things I could have asked for were a blanket to lie down on and someone to brush my hair. If granted those things, I'd ask for God to smite me immediately afterwards because I'd have left this world in a damn good mood.

I absolutely cannot wait for our version of winter...chai, blankets, jackets, that Winter Smell, Christmas. It's the simple things in life.

I don't know if it's lasting, or just a short preview of what's to come, but it's been (AZ) cold the past few days. 50s, 60s and 70s. That's hoodie/jacket weather around here.

I officially whipped out my kettle and chai yesterday -to nurse my throat- and have worn sweats all day today.

It snowed today. But only half an inch has stuck, and it probably won't last through tomorrow. I don't usually want snow before Halloween, but all the leaves blew off and the brown is kind of ugly.

Fall is here. I am, for the first time this year, wearing a sweater and turtleneck combo. Woohoo. Even though it's not cold. I just like fall clothes.

It's raining, but what should I expect. This is Washington after all. It's still too warm to wear jackets and sweaters (it's been in the high 50-60s), but I can't wait until I can break them out.

It's been in the 60s for the past couple of weeks but then we had a cold snap it dropped into the 40s last night and now I'm freezing my ass off. Anyone want to help me figure out my thermostat so I can get the heat turned on?

I'm told it snowed here a bit yesterday. And it's been cold as hell.

And I still go outside in shorts. I love cold, windy, weather. (And I like shorts; they're comfortable and easy to wear!)

I just checked and there doesn't appear to be any snow on the ground outside my window. So far we've just had really strong winds, which make biking a real pain, with flecks of snow or ice in them.

It has been so cold lately--too cold to get any more snow, which kind of sucks. But supposedly some clouds are coming in tonight, so it should be warming up again. 20s would be nice for Halloween.

Double post but with good reason.

I just had the most surreal couple of days. Our power was out for 40 hours. We had the worst ice storm in my 32 years of life. Over 1/2" of solid ice fell on Thursday night and the power went out sometime after midnight. Fortunately, my mom has a generator so my brothers and their families and I all hunkered down there. I kept my lizard warm in my shirt. My husband stayed home with our cat (and with nighttime temps of 10F, the temperature in the house got down to 40F) because he didn't want to leave her.

Driving around town looked like a war zone with giant trees fallen on cars, houses, power lines, across roads, etc. But it was also incredibly beautiful (and still is) with absolutely everything coated with a thick layer of ice; every blade of grass and twig. Almost 200,000 people were without power in the Albany area; 1 million between Maine and Pennsylvania. Our power (and heat and water) came back on tonight around 5pm. I'll post some pictures later...

Add me to the list of people who are glad you, your family, and yours pets are okay.

If the ice is anything like I've seen in other pictures, I'll bet it is breathtaking. I saw pictures a few years ago of trees covered in ice and thought it might just have been the most beautiful (if not dangerous) thing I'd ever laid eyes on. Definitely can't wait to see yours. :)

A few years ago, we had an ice storm here that kept the power off for two weeks for some of the mountains and the deeper hollows, but just three days for us. It was COLD. We used kerosene heaters and cooked on the grill. One family we knew had a gas water heater, so one day we all went to their house to shower, while they slept at ours. It was right on Christmas day, so we had a kind of joint Christmas. We quite enjoyed ourselves for the most part! I hope your ice storm was just as enjoyable!

When I was about ten we had a huge storm and it knocked our power out for a solid week. Our neighbors were the only ones on the block with a wood burning stove and we ended up living there for the week. We all had to shower at the high school and cook on grills and wood stoves.

In related news, It's snowing!!! First snow of the year here.

My mom still doesn't have power back and they said it might be Tuesday before she does. That will be 4-5 days without power. It's so weird because it's only a half mile section of the road that is still without it.

I put up some pictures here.

I loved the close up on the tree. Very pretty, Nomi. :)

That seems like a somewhat long time to take in getting power to people at this time of year in such a cold place. Did they give any reason for it?
