Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
Updates!
Just finished series 6. I feel like there was way too much going on this season. It might just be that i'm watching most of the episodes back to back (6 episodes today alone). It's a lot to process in one day. I love Matt Smith. I started out absolutely hating Amy (mostly the way she treated Rory), but have ended up loving her and Rory. I know a lot of people hate River, but I love her. I absolutely love who she is and her story time line with The Doctor is just so sad.
Now I just need to find a way to watch series 7 for free. I guess I have until November so i'm all caught up for the 50th!

For us River-haters, most of the time it feels like everyone else loves her. So there are many people (like my girlfriend) that absolutely love her, and you are not alone!I know a lot of people hate River, but I love her.

Woo! I feel so alone in my love of River, it's good to know i'm not.
My older sister has started watching (with 9) but she's having a really hard time keeping interested. She doesn't like Eccleston at all (which really makes me sad). I really hope she sticks it out, because it would be kind of cool to have a 50th anniversary get together with their family!

I love River. also. Love the storyline and the way Alex Kingston plays her character.
I'm still working my way through Classic Who. Started skipping around some. I've watched all the Classic Who episodes on Netflix, and all the Sixth Doctor episodes I could find to watch. I really like Colin Baker, which there were more episodes.
I've watched a few Seventh Doctor serials, as well, and am enjoying him.
Currently in the middle of The Invasion (Second Doctor). And I just found out who the invaders are.
(They take four episodes to tell you, the reveal is at the end of the fourth, but I figured it out before that.)

I love River's story arc, except the first 15 minutes of Let's Kill Hitler make a lot of really dumb narrative decisions. I don't understand how anyone could hate Eccleston though.

I'm going to have a hard time not seeing him as Frobisher from Torchwood.

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
So I'm seeing a lot of calls for a female Doctor. It wouldn't really surprise me, or upset or annoy me in any way, if they had picked a woman to play the role, but I guess I don't see it as something necessary. It would be like casting a woman for the next Bond role, or an American Doctor.
But I'm curious how everyone else feels about it, and if they have stronger opinions than I do, and what and why they are. If you will.

I'm not ready for a female Doctor. The Doctor's persona has always been male, and I think a gender switch would be jarring for me.

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
Except it's even more gratuitous than casting a woman as Bond (or an American as Doctor) - Bond at least has ostensibly been different people sharing a code-name. The Doctor is actually the same person. Changing gender identity is a lot different than a new accent or a new sense of humor.

For some reason, I absolutely hated the idea of a female Doctor. I can't even really pin point why, it just feels completely wrong.

Have her watch some of the old series and see how she likes Romana (a Time Lady who travels with the Doctor for a while), or get her watching the Sarah Jane Adventures! Sarah Jane even has sonic lipstickI had never thought about it but apparently my 10yo niece really wants a female doctor!

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
Okay, I may read some posts later but I'm tired and just thought I'd say - I'm glad they've stopped making the Doctor younger and younger. I hope to see DW become less shiny and I guess filmlike and go back to its original form of a funny, dark, appealing-to-specific-audience, cult TV series, instead of trying to get more viewers and becoming more general and less unique. Like setting Torchwood in Amerca when half the fun was it being in Wales. Bad idea.

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
I have to say, I don't think making the Doctor younger has been a problem. I really liked David Tennant and Matt Smith as the Doctor, though I really don't think they could have gone younger than Matt was. But I am also looking forward to Peter Capaldi in the role.

Awesome! There is a fake Tardis a few minutes from my house, just 4 doors put together and painted blue but from a distance it looks real.

It cracks me up that it's "Dalek" because when I was watching Dr. Who, their accent ALWAYS made it sound like "Darlek" and that will ALWAYS be how I think of them!My daughter saw a TARDIS.

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
When it comes to doctor who personal experiences the only one I've ever had was seeing a weeping angel. Its a bit funny since I saw it before I had ever watched doctor who. I was walking back from the mall with some other kids from computer camp, we took a shortcut through this park/graveyard for rich people who donated lots of money to the college. It was on the side of the path (right side I think, can't remember for sure) kneeling, not standing like the ones in Blink, but hands over its eyes and other than the position pretty identical to the ones in the show. The whovians in our group were all pointing and shouting don't blink and whatnot and I was just kinda laughing at them since I didn't know what they were referencing. A month or two later I finally watched blink. Totally creeped me out, and to date is still the only episode of doctor who, or any show/movie really to have me freaked out. Even partial pictures of the Angels still make me flinch. Still, it makes for a good whovian tale.My daughter saw a TARDIS.
And a Dalek!

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
*lurks*
So I finally new seasons (no classic as of yet). This was a huge hole on my geek resume. I was relieved how good it was given the build up of the show on the internets. I tend to be disappointed when things have huge hype around.
The Doctors
The ninth! I love Eccleston. With all due respect to Tennant, he is still my favorite. I liked him more after watching the first season again. Dalek is probably my favorite episode overall. He has an edge and contempt about him unlike the other two and it makes perfect sense given the Time War and all. I wish that he stayed on more than one season.
Tennant as the tenth is magnificent and the perfect counter point to the ninth. He is hilarious and flippant, but still be authoritative and flash anger that instills fear in others. If the ninth and tenth were reversed, I'm not sure if my opinions would be flipped as well. And as he so often says, he really is brillant.
The eleventh...Matt Smith certainly tries and I like him well enough at times, but there is something off about him. That is the only way I can describe it because I haven't been able to put my finger on exactly what bothers me. Perhaps, a second time through will help out.
The Companions (in order of preference)
Donna! It is really something how much I love her, given how much I loathed her during her first appearance. I love how she openly rejects the Doctor sexually and romantically. And she doesn't let him get away with any BS either. The scene when she first sees the Doctor in season four is just perfect, a perfect example of why I love her and love her and the Doctor together.
Rory and Amy. Again, I hated both of them to start. I thought Amy was going to be another in the line of the "I'm in love with the Doctor" companions. Rory was the ultimate nice guy, push over victim with no backbone that I hate. While both of these are true for a time, they both move past those characterizations. I look forward to watching them again as well.
Rose. She has the most character development, I think. She goes from useless to useful and lost girl to a person with a place in the universe (or parallel universe).
Martha. She is phenomenal in the season finale and she is pretty. Those are really the only two nice things I have to say about this character.
That's all I really have for now. I'm sure I'll be back with more.

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
Some more stuff.
Other Companions
River. I like River a lot. She is pretty much the ultimate at putting the Doctor in his place. I also like when time travel becomes part of the story and not just "Hey! We traveled to X and it is year Y. Let's see what happens!". So, I pretty much love the interwoven time lines. But I can't help the thought that her story line would be more enjoyable with the 10th. I re-watched the 11th's run again and something is still off about him in my mind. But for the love of god, can we please meet Jim the Fish?
Clara. Souffle Girl! She is quirky and adorable. I think how the Day of the Doctor plays out will ultimately determine where I rank her among the companions. but I love the possibilities of her story line.
Adam. Not much to him, but I just like the idea of a failed companion. Also that the Doctor can make mistakes when it comes to judging someone's character.
Captain Jack. Love him! He is pretty much a perfect character. He cracks me up. I'm a little scared to pick up Torchwood because I don't want him ruined. I was also a little said to read that the writers backed off the assertion that he becomes the Face of Boe.
All of the companions families are pretty much fine, not much to say about them individually.
Enemies/Aliens
Daleks. Like I said before, Dalek is probably my favorite episode. They (or I guess he) was truly terrifying in this episode and the way the Doctor reacts to them is amazing. I figured they would be back in a big bad way at least once, but how many times do these freaking guys come back? I thought the entire point of the Time War was that Doctor sacrificed his people to get rid of the Dalek. The Time Lords just don't pop back up all willy nilly.
Cybermen. Pretty much Dalek-lite. Pretty much the same problem as the Dalek. How many times does the Doctor have to get rid of these guys?
Weeping Angels! Now these guys are truly terrifying. I kind of wish that they would have left them alone after Blink, but can certainly understand why they went back to them.
The Master is pretty great. My only complaint is that I wish the Time Lords got a little more play during their comeback. I mean the Dalek and Cybermen have started several empires a piece even though they are both "extinct".
Ood. "Oh, it's an Ood. Oods are good. Love an Ood."

Re: Doctor Who (yarr, there be spoilers here!)
I agree. I liked River and Ten's chemistry a lot better. Eleven seems too young for her.But I can't help the thought that her story line would be more enjoyable with the 10th. I re-watched the 11th's run again and something is still off about him in my mind.
