Who talks more?
According to this, women do - more than twice as much.
So - do you agree? If you're a chick, do you think of yourself as more talkative than the guys you know? If you're a guy, well you probably aren't interested anyways.

Neither. The reports are largely crap. There's very little science behind this myth.

I think it's impossible to generalize. As for me? I'm incredibly talkative in certain situations, and although y'all might not believe me, incredibly shy in others. I have a feeling that's how most people would see themselves. On a whole I would consider myself very outgoing, will happily walk up to someone new and introduce myself, and the more nervous I get the more I ramble. But I have guy friends who could say the exact same statement. I think it has a lot more to do with personality type than gender.

i pretty much never shut up. ever. you can ask Janelle. she's had to listen to me.
the only time i see to be at a loss for words is when i'm in the middle of an emotional conversation with the person who is the source of the emotion.
example: i can talk about henry til doomsday (clearly) but put me in a room with him and suddenly i'm mute.

you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

All girls I know seem to talk more than I do.... but then again, so do most guys I know, too.
Hmm, now that I think of it, there's really only one person I know that seems to be quiet more than me. And when I realized that, I had a newfound respect for him.

Im not sure that girls talk that much more than guys in person. There are def some girls that will not shut up, ever. But then again, same goes for some guys that i know....
Cell phones on the other hand, girls talk so much more. Heres a typical converstation betwen guys:
"where you at?" "im in town" "Ok, see you in a couple"
And thats the whole conversation. Total time, 30 seconds...
It seems like to me though, girls are much more willing to chatter on the phone. 3-1 odds say that if im on the phone for more than 10 minutes, that there is a female on the other end.

I'd just like to reiterate that anyone who buys this book is buying crap science and wasting their money. It's a big load of s***. The studies it "cites" have nothing to do with what the book proposes. Empirically, men and women talk... pretty much the same amount, on average.
My own guess is its the cultural stereotype we've been fed for ages that makes us "see" it's true. It's the classical "confirmation bias" fallacy, and when someone tells us it's TRUE! REALLY! LOOK, SCIENCE! we buy it.
Too bad it's entirely made up.

while i agree that the book is bulljive, i do agree that women talk a whole lot more. just from my own experience.
personally i'm a man of few words — at least in person — i tend to only say things when i have something to say. i make my opinions known and let them speak for themselves.
this does change a bit when i'm at band practice. but only a bit. we joke around a whole lot more. and then there's singing... but that's another story.

I've heard reports on these findings about women talking more 3 times on the news tonight! You'd think they cured cancer or something.
That's so me in a nutshell.I prefer the strong, silent type, I guess.

-Franny and Zooey, J. D. SalingerDo you love me? You didn't say once in your horrible letter. I hate you when your being hopelessly super-male and retiscent (sp?). Not really hate you but am constitutionally against strong, silent men. Not that you aren't strong but you know what I mean. It's getting so noisy in here I can hardly hear myself think.

Global news, actually. It's Canadian.lol don't tell me you were watching FOX news...
I didn't know we had yet another teacher on Pweb.I can't really say. As a substitute teacher, I see both males and females talking quite a bit.
From a personal perspective, I only talk when I have something to say and sometimes not even then. I despise small talk.

But see...I'm not that close to receiving a teaching degree. I'm just a college student with a job as a sub.lol.
That makes three of us since I'm actually only a pre-service teacher/teacher candidate/student teacher, or whatever you want to call it. At least you guys are getting paid!

I always figured women talk more. And still do figure it that way. Guys may gossip, for example, but girls are known to gossip.
Some study I heard of in a relationship book said a big difference between men and women is this: husband and wife go to a relationship seminar to help their marriage. They hear tips on how to improve individually and with one another. Afterward, the women wanna talk about it right away and ask questions to their husband who'd rather not talk about it at the moment. Women take in the stuff and wanna talk. Men take it in but need time to digest and process it before they wanna talk about it. And men may even tend to act on the advice they heard without ever bringing it up in conversation. Booyakasha.
