They finally got a few inches back home. I really hope the wind doesn't blow it away this time. I refuse to spend a Christmas in Alaska that is not white.

Snow in Beijing...

I've been told that this year, since i arrived, has been very atypical for Beijing, weatherwise. Colder than normal, with floods that noone remembers...

I guess the elements tremble on my wake!

I want snow! It says there is a itsy bitsy chance of snow on the 19th, but I have absolutely no hope. Snow for Christmas would be the best present ever!

I love getting to drive through the stretch of I-15 hit worst by the snowstorm. Though I'm not sure whether to take the label of "difficult" driving conditions as a warning or a challenge. I'm a chicken, so it's really the former. I just feel like I should act tough being from Alaska and all.

And the low is -10 this weekend. If I wanted this weather I would have stayed up north.

It's a record-breaking warm year in Chicago. 321 or so days without more than an inch of snow and today will be in the 50s, which is warmer, I think, than my hometown in AZ today. I am well and truly disappointed.

We had a massive blizzard yesterday. Over 50cm of snow, crazy high winds. Our car is completely buried in snow (only the roof is visible).
We lost power (and therefore heat) from 7am to midnight.

Thank goodness we own a camp stove, candles and lots of blankets!!

update:

This is our car. Time to get shoveling.

People ask me why I don't want to move back to Canada and I remind them that this sort of thing can happen in much of the country.

So much snow! I am so happy right now! And the wind hasn't come quite yet, so the trees are still beautiful! It is a wonderful day.

Conversation I had with myself on the walk to work this morning.

Weather: I heard you're moving, eh. (For some reason, the Weather is a Canadian.)
Me: Yeah...when I said I wanted to experience a real winter, I meant maybe last week or next week or really, any other week.
Weather: It'll be fun, eh!
Me:...if you say so. At least it's pretty.

It's a beautiful 56 degrees out right now. Just wisps of clouds in the sky and it was nice enough to take the cat outside for half an hour or so.

You might feel differently if you were doing a lot of travelling and your local airport(s) freaked out and closed down during snow storms. (Also, I was just in southwest Florida, where it is sunny and beautiful. Coming home to this -- after many weather delays -- was not cool.)

Also, I lied: 18.5 inches cumulative. Largest 24 hour accumulation in the city's history. (Shocker: it was not prepared.)

18.5 inches would have been amazing!! We finally had a few storms, but we haven't had much accumulation. Our most has been about 1/2 foot. It's not helping our mountain snowpack, which we really rely on. It's only March and Denver has already started water restrictions. Some of our local farms are looking at only being able to plant 10% of normal. We had a wildfire in January and another last week. This drought really sucks!!!

That's so weird, steph! The airline was saying they weren't sure they'd be able to get people back into Denver because of the expected snow, so they were making arrangements to possibly cancel flights. (They promised my flight was just being delayed and that there was little risk it would be totally cancelled.) I figured it would have been at least as bad there as it was here.

Apparently airlines don't hire meteorologists.

I'm either incredibly slow or incredibly dense (probably both), but I never realized "Ewok in Jawa-land" was referring to an Ewok living in the desert. If you hadn't just made the winter equivalent, I probably never would have figured it out.

So over the weekend we went to San Francisco to the Exploratorium, and just as we get out the car door it goes from raining to dumping buckets, I'm not kidding there was a half inch of water all over the floor! so we go into the nearest entrance to the building and this guy from the museum comes up and asks us to go around the building, we agree then ask if we could wait for a minute until the rain settles a bit, he refuses, we head out into the rain and get totally soaked. As soon as we reach the building, magic rain blocker comes to our late rescue reducing the torrents of water to a gentle mist. :bash:

AK does it stand for Avada Kedavra or Alaska? Killer Hermione or Alaska Hermione? (iirc the Hermione was from a halloween costume thread).

We had a day of rain yesterday, and today is still a bit wet. That's probably our allotment for the spring. (Desert humor)
