Storage vendors consider a kilobyte to be 1000 bytes instead of the traditional 1024 bytes. It's the same for hard drives, solid state drives, and flash memory. f****** dumb, huh?

I've heard of that but it still pisses me off. It feels like just one more kick in the pants, and I'm already fit to just take the thing back to bestbuy and say "This is what I paid for with the extended warranty. FIX IT." Google has not so far helped me fix it myself, and I've been trying but every failure just makes me more angry.

DO IT. Seriously. Take it back and make them make it work. Telling people what you want and why you want it and that you want it now sometimes helps. Doing the same with a computer, I have found, seldom leads to appreciative change.

I'm afraid you'd be in the wrong about this, now. Historically, byte has been counted in powers of 2, so kilo was made to be 1024 bytes (roughly 1000, that is, kilo), mega was 1024 kilos, and so on.
But a few years ago, the IEEE changed the convention from binary to decimal, so now kilo is effectively 1000 byte, mega is 1,000,000, etc.

The confusion comes with the OSs, because they probably still use the old convention, so they read "wrong" the actual size of the disc. I understand some newer OSs (maybe win7 does? i am not sure, lastest Mac OSX and latest linuxes do it for sure) read the size correctly, that is, in decimal.

How long ago is "a few years"? My iMac is almost three years old. It was advertised as having a 500GB HD but only actually has 465.76GB. I remember looking into back then and the reason I was given was that the footprint of the OS and other vital software wasn't figured into the drive's total space.

I don't know the conversion rate. Does 465 old gigs = 500 new gigs? Or vice versa depending on which way the OS is supposedly miscalculating it.

scale up to gigabytes and that's how you lose 40 GB of space. it's never actually there, computers accurately divide by 1024, unlike humans who divide by 1000 because kilo means 1000. The computer count is more technically accurate. vendors can just advertise more space than is actually there because they are allowed to be bad at division.

No they don't. Software reporting file sizes and disk space and such report sizes based on the binary suffixes, not decimal ones, and doing otherwise would piss a lot of people off.

Hardware storage vendors report products with the decimal prefixes for historical reasons; the overloaded term is unfortunate, but it's not some conspiracy to make it look like they're selling you more or something. If you want to be unambiguous, use kibibyte, mebibyte, etc. And then have people laugh at you for making minor distinctions nobody cares about.

I've already taken to heart the "worst mother" message that keeps being sent. I don't need to hear it in different ways over and over and over again.

Kids are going to get bumps and scrapes and fall and cry and they're going to get hurt in ways that you can't always stop or control, but that you're going to want to shield them from because you're Mom and you love them.

Some of it is stupid and preventable, sure, but it's also them exploring their independence and making mistakes and so long as you are there to help pick up the pieces when they get in over their heads, you're golden.

Moms don't actually have eyes on the back of their heads and in other rooms and contrary to popular belief, moms aren't superheroes. You can't be everywhere, always and you sure as hell can't be perfect.

None of this changes how you feel, I know but I want you to see, I wish you could see, that you are a great mother. This stuff doesn't change that or diminish that and your best is so very good enough, and more, for them.

shoot, Brayden will now be able to brag to all his friends how many stitches he's got. Boys are always impressed by stitch count, likewise impressed by how many broken bones one has had, and how many limbs have been in casts, some boys I knew growing up had something in a cast virtually every summer.

People can be assholes, so it's no wonder their kids are going to exhibit behaviors of an assholish nature. That sounds awful, I know, but I just got back from my niece's first birthday party and there was one of those inflatable, bouncing house things. Naturally, the kids wanted to play in there and the adults were only too happy to leave them to their own devices because, hey, they're just right there in the same yard and if the adults are within sight and hearing range, no big deal.

Only, on numerous occasions you'd hear things like "Fight! Fight!" being yelled by the entire group or "Scaredy cat!" and a child would leave, either physically or emotionally hurt.

Maybe that's okay to some people and maybe I should have kept my mouth shut but I was not going to stand there and watch little kids pick on each other and then smile it off as "kids being kids."

I marched right over to the thing and I told them they better behave, that I didn't want to hear any more mean things and there was absolutely no more pushing and fighting.

After I did that, a little girl that had been picked on came up to me and was very upset and it broke my heart. I escorted her in and stayed in for a while and made some great little friends but jesus. I was so angry that the parents thought that was okay. Kids are vicious and they need supervision in groups.
