Mouthgasm: Food that's really, really good.
on iron chef tonight the challenger made a tempura egg yolk served on top of a dollop of fresh wasabi (not the green all horseradish paste you eat in most sushi restaurants and get with sushi packs from the supermarket) mixed with a little green apple served on a bed of sturgeon caviar. I was drooling it sounded sooooo good, I wanted to taste it so badly. In fact all his dishes were amazing, it's shame the asshat Flay won yet again. I think the competitor tonight could have competed on the original Iron Chef, first time on the american version I've seen anyone besides Batali make dishes of a caliber with Japanese version.

They are! I've had two of them this year. Happiness in a paper cup.Oooh, that must mean pumpkin spice lattes are back, too!*bump*
Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins.
They are only around this time of year and they are worth looking forward to all year.
Fall is my favorite season. Not because of the Starbucks food and beverage options, but that sort of underlines it.

In Joplin, of all places, I just had the best thai food I've ever eaten, and I've tried many a place in LA. my sisters ordered very tasty stuff, but I ordered one of the days off-menu specials and it was astounding, possibly the best meal I've ever had in Joplin. it was Chicken and Shrimp Curry with Mango.
WOW!
chunks of freshly cut mango (about an inch square, a little smaller) not cooked but put as a bed on the plate. on top of this is served the hot chicken curry and three butterflied fried shrimp. The curry was exquisitely flavored, it was mild (Joplin mild at that) but the remarkable thing was that it wasn't bland or white-people lifeless that a lot of thai/spicy food places start serving after they're discovered by throngs and then told their food is too spicy even at mild. It had heat, but that was a component that complimented the flavors of the curry, in other words it was perfectly tuned to be spicy for someone not used to spice withotu being offensive. I'll order the medium next time because I like it a little spicier, but it was still outstanding. And the mango which was still a bit cool inside provided a refreshing contrast and complement to the heat of the curry. and the tastes of the mango with the curry and chicken or the soft mango with the curry and crunch and flavor of the shrimp was just fantastic. individually all the components were outstanding, but taken as a bite together everything was just excellent.
What's more is they served complimentary soup before hand and you could taste that it was a real bone broth rich soup (though a clear broth) no bouillon here. The appetizer of fried chicken wontons was superb, and the dessert we ordered, fried banana eggrolls with ice cream was equally excellent, even if the ice cream was generic blue bell french vanilla and the chocolate syrup was hersheys. the warm banana eggrolls more than made up for it and were superb with the chocolate and icecream.
It was my sister's birthday, which was why we got an appetizer and dessert, in all well worth it and one of the better birthday dinners I've ever been to. I'll be returning to this place everytime I come home if there's time.
And they deliver! wow.

They have this ice cream here that's called "Udderly Devine". It's vanilla with a ton of chocolate fudge swirl and tiny chocolate-covered peanut butter cups.
So good. *drooly drool drool*
I was nervous, since the first time I tried it I was pregnant, but it's totally just as amazing tasting when not pregnant.

Perfect timing!
There's this cupcake place downtown called "Cupcake Jones" and they are DELICIOUS.
They only serve six types of cupcakes per day, with three of them rotating every day and the other three rotating every month. It is so worth it.

I made some cupcake shaped ones last week. Yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I posted a pic in the "smells in my kitchen" thread. Yours sound amazingly yummy. I love cream cheese.one of the best things I've ever made were dark chocolate cake balls with whipped cream cheese, covered in melted Andes mint chips.
For those who don't know, cake balls are cakes ground into crumbs, mixed with icing and formed into balls, the covered in chocolate. Spherical sugar rush ftw.

I like cream puffs okay but I LOVE them if they have chocolate frosting (well, ganache type stuff) on top. Otherwise, they are just meh.

Why oh why have they not figured out instantaneous (and free) travel yet? My roommate and I made cream puffs once and they were pretty good, but I'm pretty sure nothing in the world compares to what I imagine steph's food tastes like.Everyone come to my house. I will make them for you.

Re: Mouthgasm: Food that's really, really good.
The Wisconsin State fair is famous for their Cream Puffs. The booth literally has a drive through window where people order them by the dozen without having to pay admission to the fair. I've lived here 10 years and haven't had one of the mythical things, but I assume at this point there's no way they could possibly live up to the hype. The whole Milwaukee metro area can't stop talking about the cream puffs for the entire 10 days of the fair.
That said, I do really like cream puffs in general.

So, not quite as good as the cream puffs but surprisingly close, I just had a chocolate covered pretzel for the first time yesterday.
We have this community food spot at work where people keep leaving junk food for everyone and I thought they were cookies, so I grabbed one. It was then that I realized it wasn't a cookie but I already had it, so I couldn't put it back. I took a bite and man, was I glad I made the mistake. Sweet and salty and flipping tasty.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. if you like Chocolate Covered Pretzels, check out Take 5 candy bars. They have the chocloate, the pretzel, but then they add Peanut Butter, Caramel, and Peanuts. Soooo good.

*nod* It's true; I haven't. But I'm fixing that, one type of food at a time!
One of my big goals for the next year is to try as many types of Chicago pizza as I can -Lou Malnati's, Gino's, Art of Pizza, Giordano's, etc.- to find a hot sandwich that blows my mind (so far, neither the pizza sandwich or the Italian beef has done more than garner a "It was okay" from me), to find a Sunday breakfast spot, try ethnic foods I haven't had...and the list goes on and on. Basically, I want to do stuff I wouldn't or couldn't in AZ. We'll see how it turns out.

What do you look for in a hot sandwich? Do you have specific criteria that aren't being met, or are you totally open to whatever, but nothing has hit the spot so far?

Two of my favorite hot sandwiches are a turkey reuben and a tuna melt. Now, you wouldn't think that you could do that much with a tuna melt but when I was in LA, I went to some local place with great reviews on yelp. They put some kind of buffalo sauce on the tuna melt and I was very wary of it initially but it was SO freaking good. Alea, I highly suggest using yelp to find good local food places, if you haven't already.

Costco has a chicken melt that is fabulous.
Also, I think my brain is gone. I was imagining a chocolate covered soft pretzel and was all concerned because I've never had one of those either! Then I realized what you all were talking about and that a soft pretzel may not actually taste that good with chocolate...

I had the best chinese food I've had outside of hong kong this week. It's a little place in a safeway shopping center. You walk in and the walls have pictures of the owner with pres bush, hillary clinton and all sorts of famous people. It's won some local and national awards. And the food was so good that I can't stop thinking about it and planning when I can get back.
Ooh, and the fry bread taco I had in carrizozo, new mexico had me thinking about it all the time, too.

Ah, god. SO jealous.Ooh, and the fry bread taco I had in carrizozo, new mexico had me thinking about it all the time, too.
I've never had an Indian taco in NM but the reservation just north of where I lived in AZ did a huge pow-wow once a year in March where these were available and we'd go, grab a taco, get some sort of red slushy to go with it, and watch the dancing and listen to the drumming. It was such a great experience.
But the NM food...oh man, I miss NM food like crazy. They have their own style of "Mexican" food, that the whole rest of the US does not do; the US tends to do a more CA style, which is also good, but home is NM Mexican food.
