Irrational Irritation: The phrase "same difference". Why can't people just say "same thing"?

irrational irritaion: we are reading a book in school and a character's last name is "Malloy" but my teacher always says "Mallory"

I.I.: That flood limit now applies to edits. It seems like every other post nowadays I try to edit right after posting. I always notice some small error/typo/etc right after it has been posted.

II: Computer animated movies. Yes, they're better written than the old inked movies. But that could be fixed by making better written inked features. Don't get me wrong, CG looks great, but so does ink. Now they're all but gone. Thankfully we still get a stop motion flick every now and then.

GP: My 2&ahalf year old daughter is still saying "trick or treat."

Guilty Pleasure: Heavy traffic. I witnessed some poor bastard live the opening scene from Office Space on my way across town today.

Guilty Pleasure: Giving my car gas. Not becuase, you know, gas is good for him and everything, but because I love gas stations.

I suppose whether this is irrational or not depends on how seriously you take grammar errors.

But I once counted over forty of them in half a class period of overheads with bullet points.

personally i like elipses.

There are elipses used correctly and grammatically, and those are fine.

And then there are ellipses used occasionally, to indicate a sense of trailing off or a continuation, or a mental pause. I prefer these used sparingly.

But... then... there... is... overload... which... makes... reading... difficult... and... annoying...

On the same subject:

I also hate it when a person using an ellipsis (especially the person who is the current target of my rage) uses four or five dots instead of just three.....

I often wonder if he does it for emphasis, the way a normal person might use an exclamation point.....

"clicky" and "iawtc" and adding a needless "ie" to the end of ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. fine, i myself have succumbed to some. i'll say "pic" on occasion. but mostly? i'll "lol" and that's about it. and i NEVER "lol" when i'm actually laughing, so what's the point? i haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate netspeaks. damn "teh internetz."

I sometimes call it "teh interweb" in real life, when it is being exasperating. My net speak pet peeves are "u" and "kewl."

What? I love those commercials! Between those and the dancing ipod commercials, Mac has really good marketing. They know how to ingrain (engrain?) themselves into the public conciousness.

I'm with JL on that--I adore the mac commericals. I mean, most commercials suck, but there are a few gems out there. Personally, the geico commercials and the mac commercials have always been favorites.

well, im glad they fired him, but i do hope they keep the "pc" guy...

People who cannot follow simple instructions on anonymous questionnaires. If you're going to spend your precious time filling it out, fill it out correctly. All you're doing by circling the space BETWEEN the numbers is wasting your time and giving us unusable data. It's not like you're ever going to be able to explain your answer to us.

Sheesh. PICK a number. It's actually not that important whether you pick 2 or 3 as long as you gave it SOME thought.

irrational irritation: When someone quotes one of my posts which includes a silly grammatical or spelling typo. I hate to see those in something I've typed. I can go back and edit the original post, but I can't do anything about the quote. It irritates me.

That's the point of them, when I do that. But I'm just venting at frustration at questionnaires that are mandatory and stupid.

Irritation: What is the deal with "=/="? I'm assuming it's "not equal to", but I've never seen that notation before. There are plenty of other equivalents which I'm used to seeing, like !=, <>, -neq, \neq, ≠, or even \+= makes some sense, but I've never seen =/= before. It bothers me.

=/= is a long equal with a slash through it. yes, it's not mathematically or programmingly correct, but it looks okay.

I don't know how to make the pretty one. I use my ghetto symbols.

The questionnaire was entirely voluntary. Believe me. I wish I could tell you how many people refused to take it.

Which means you really are just wasting your time. All that happens is I put 99 into your answer sheet and move on.

Stupid. People = Stupid. People =/= Smart.

II #1:

This conversation happened a couple of months ago, but it still bothers me:

My Physics teacher in high school: Hey, I haven't seen you in a while. What are you majoring in?
Me: Computer Science.
My Physics teacher in high school: [Knowingly, almost smugly] I knew it!

No s***, everyone knew that. I've known that since before I was in high school. Way to figure that one out.

II #2:

I had to use Windows today for a little bit. I do not understand how people use computers without decent command-line utilities. I'm just so lost when I can't even get command history or TAB-completion. Those are features in most windowses, but it's not on by default, so it's still confusing as hell when I try to figure out how to turn them on.

(Random note: Whenever I try to help people with Macs, usually the first thing I do is to bring up a terminal, which actually can take some time. The person I'm helping has never used it before, and hell if I know how to find it the first few times I've ever used a Mac.)

I have to say, my biggest surprise when I got a Mac was being introduced to the Unix command line. I love it! I wasn't exactly a lightweight on the DOS prompt, but unix is just SOOOOO much better.

Irrational irritation: when people insist that Windows is better. The only reason that they can give is because you can play better games. If they try to give a different reason, they refuse to listen.


I'm probably the same way about Macs, but at least I'm somewhat right.

I'll foreward this by saying that this is not directed at any of the above posters, just that their mention reminded me of this.

PC != Windows. Dumbshits.

MacOS is NOT the most used system in the world, and there IS a reason for this. It is purely because of a decision that Apple made years ago; however that single decision also has kept Macintosh computers to the high standard that they are today, and is the reason that the MacOS is as good as it is now.

Windows, through all it's faults, is still used by a striking majority of computer users. No matter how much virii, spyware, exploits and flaws you can point out, it can't possibly be THAT bad if there are that many people using it.

Windows HAS all of those viruses, spyware, exploits and flaws BECAUSE it is so highly used. You think because you're on a Mac your OS is inheirantly perfect? It's not. But there's no point making MacOS viruses and spyware because it'd never go anywhere.

Give me the ability to design, build, and run my own MacOS based computer, legitimately, and with full functionality, and I'll do the switch. Yes, there are hacked versions of MacOS that bypass the security chip, however the problem is that most components and setups would not be supported for the lack of drivers. Not to mention the fact that this would be anything but legitimate.

MacOS, purely as an operating system, is superior to Windows in many ways. Linux, purely as an operating system, regardless of what distrobution that you go through, is superior to Windows in many ways. It's superior to MacOS in many ways, as well; and MacOS is superior to Linux in other ways. But, and here's the kicker, Windows is superior to both in some ways too.

Why can't people just deal with that? They all have their advantages, and their disadvantages.

II: When people complain about the taglines I give myself on MSN. It's my f****** tagline, I can put what I want there. I make a point not to curse or be offensive, and yet still something like "Happiness is just carefully disguised complacency" gets your back up. f*** off.

This isn't really true. 15% of the computer community (that's a statistic I heard somewhere, but can't remember where; it could have been wrong, but it's probably close) uses a Mac. That is a LOT of people. Windows is a very poorly written OS and is a lot more susceptible to malware. Yes, it is a major consideration that Windows is the most popular OS, but there would be SOMETHING built for Mac (other than the, what, 1 virus they've found?) if it were as weakly built as Windows is.

Well, the ability is there, depending on what you mean by legitimately. You wouldn't get AppleCare on it by any means, but there are plenty of FrankenMacs out there.

You're talking my language here Although, I would argue that some distributions, although still superior to Windows in many ways, are also inferior in many more important, obvious ways. *cough* Mandriva, Lindows (or whatever they call that now) *cough*

However, Windows is only superior in that all the software is built for it. If you look at it as an operating system only, as you suggest, it may have a few small things that are superior, but not much.
