In 1959, representatives of 12 countries, including the United States, signed a treaty in Washington setting aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve, free from military activity.

In 1963, The Beatles' first single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," was released in the United States.

In 1969, The U.S. government held its first draft lottery since World War II.

In 1978, Jimmy Carter more than doubles national park system size.

In 1982, Micheal Jackson releases "Thriller".

In 1988, Benazir Bhutto was nominated prime minister of Pakistan. She was the first woman elected to govern a Muslim nation.

In 1991, Ukrainians voted overwhelmingly for independence from the Soviet Union.

In 1992, Amy Fisher was sentenced to five to 15 years in prison for shooting and seriously wounding Mary Jo Buttafuoco, the wife of the teenager's lover, Joey Buttafuoco, on New York's Long Island. (She served seven years.)

Anyone have anything else? Nobody I give a crap about has a birthday today...

Jason, we all know you PMed Satya and told him to make this thread one day in advance to your birthday. It's not very subtle.

By the way, happy birthday. I should really check the Foyer more often...
