Help Starlooker Solve an Argument

Postby starlooker » Mon Jul 14, 2008 9:03 pm

My friend and I are having a very drawn out argument about what sort of animal this looks like. I brought up the idea that the unbiased observer would say it looks like the animal I say it looks like. Thus, pweb, we are turning to you as unbiased observers to say what you think it is.

He stipulated I not put in a poll, in order not to have order effects or suggest anything inadvertantly. So. Just your first response. What is this?

A goat would be my first answer, based mostly on the head. The body is definitely closer to a wolf, or maybe a moose.

Moose, for sure. Even before the helper picture.

Legs are too short for a moose - it's a goat

The base is actually the top of a lake or pond. You can see lily pads. So, half its legs are submerged. Also, moose.

Mule, or goat.

Before reading Wil's post, I was convinced it was a Moosekey; or a creature with the head of a moose and the body of a donkey.

But now the small legs are explained, and even though the body seems too small for the head, I'll stick with moose.

I would believe it is a moose, just not to scale, which is why his legs are seem shorter.

But if you had a choice to put a goat, a mule, or a moose in front of your business what would you choose. I am guessing a moose since people tend to admire moose more.

Does the name or type of business have any say in this?

It's a female moose. Take off the horns and that's what a moose looks like.

My first thought, before reading the responses, was moose. And it seems that's the consensus as well.

you know those wierd semi-documentary, semi-movie-with-a-plot narrated animal movies that Disney made for TV way back when? well one of my favorites is an obscure gem called Mister, The Lovesick Moose. and it followed our hero moose from being a baby Moose to being a grown adolescent Moose that is tamed by a kindly, portly old farmer. except Mister breaks down the fence keeping him in and then follows the old man, who pushes a vegetable cart, into town and eats most of the vegetables, causing ruination for the old man (well at least for one day). I don't think it's even on imdb, that's how obscure it is.

Mooses are awesomes.

That is either a moose calf or an undersized moose cow. But either way, it is a moose.

You can tell by the moose-shape. Also the gross neck beard. Mooses like that. Also a guy I went to high school with. But this isn't him. It's a moose.

ETA: And Rei, on a moose those things on the side of its head are called "antlers".
It's not "noob" to rhyme with "boob". It's "newbie" to rhyme with "boobie".

I've always thought antlers were stick-like. Those things are more like massive plates with spikes.

It's actually kind of the opposite.. horns tend to be single kind of spiky things (like on rhinos or unicorns)... more elaborate horns are antlers (like on buck deer or moose).

I can tell you for sure that it is a moose. I am a Canadian who sees one of those at least three times in a sumer npo matter where I am, plus I hunt, so I see those a lot more than other people. It is definitely a cow moose. (cow meaning female).

So, starlooker, do we deserve an answer to this question yet or are you still trying to collect more opinions?

It really does appear most people believe it is a moose. :)

Without seeing a picture of a moose (I'd never seen a moose before. Except perhaps at the bottom of the CN tower), I'd have said goat. But there are a LOT of resemblances to the moose.

I also think it's a female moose.

I don't see how it could be a goat. This looks nothing like it:
