Bilbo? Smaug? Meet Pan's Labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct the Hobbit and the bridging movie:

The guy who directed Pan's Labyrinth and the Devil's Backbone. This could be awesome.

I guess this takes him out of the running for Deathly Hallows.

I saw that too! Too bad about Harry Potter, but this is really a once in a lifetime opportunity for Del Toro, and it's a perfect fit. He really is the only person who SHOULD direct it outside of Peter Jackson.

Out of Del Toro's work, I've only seen Pan's Labyrinth, and while certainly fantastic enough, in the most literal sense, for me to expect a great version of the Hobbit from him, it's certainly not a children's movie, and the Hobbit always struck me as being the book out of LotR most aimed at the younger crowd.

Not that Del Toro can't do that just as well, but I'm just hoping no where in the process do producers/studios, etc. get in the way and either demand he be Peter Jackson while he's doing the Hobbit.

woohoo, December 2010 is when I think The Hobbit is scheduled for, though it could be 2011 (ten years after fellowship came out)

According to Variety:
In a major step forward on "The Hobbit," Guillermo del Toro has signed on to direct the New Line-MGM tentpole and its sequel.

those of you unfamiliar with Del Toro's work other than Pan's Labyrinth should check out The Devil's Backbone, which, in my opinion, is even more impressive than Pan's Labyrinth.

Great news, I saw that last night. I'm excited! In my eyes he's the only other person besides Jackson to direct these movies.
