Adventures in Cartoonisting

Postby Wind Swept » Tue Jan 22, 2008 1:05 am

By pure chance, I've acquired a job cartoonistering for the school newspaper. For future reference, squarish entries are to do with an editorial article, longish ones have nothing to do with anything. It would appear I'll be alternating between the two formats.

Cartoonisting, or cartoonistering?
For future reference
So we get to see more of them, right?

Chris, I'm not rolling my eyes at you, I'm rolling my eyes at the general belief that "B.A. = waste of a degree with which you can't do a thing."
Here, here!

I mean, sure, there are a number of them in which you get a degree for something in which it doesn't actually help get you a job, but there are a number of careers that actually require a BA degree. Example: animation.

Actually, I'm looking at going into animation with a B.S. degree...

Well, most of the places I've seen that post hiring requirements want a Graphic Design degree or something of equal value, and that is a B.A. What B.S. are you looking at?

Is "BS" an American thing? Around here it's always B.Sc. Probably to avoid the obvious jokes about having a Bull S**t degree.

What B.S. are you looking at?
Graphic Communications. I'm really not sure why it's a B.S. major, but I thoroughly enjoy the irony it inspires.

Well, perhaps we'd just be proud to have a degree in BSing. It'd certainly be useful, and probably not inaccurate for the actual BS degrees in most cases.

Just for the record:

It's known as a B.Sc. in America, too. At least, it is for the most part.

And, as far as I'm aware, the only difference between the two is foreign language, a B.A. requiring it and a B.Sc. not, which tends to make a B.A. more valuable. That's not to say that when choosing which degree I didn't choose a B.Sc., though. (What can I say? Four years of Spanish in High School didn't leave me with a good taste in my mouth for continuing those studies.)

Meh? I've always seen it as BS.

And mine has a foreign language requirement, but that's a University requirement; not for the degree itself, I suppose.

I'm pretty sure the majority of BA majors here don't require a foreign language course. Obviously, things like Teaching English as a Second Language and Japanese require a second language...

Don't the exact requirements of any degree depend on the university and what you're actually majoring in?

Probably. I just know that all Arts undergrads had to take two language courses to fulfill their breadth requirements. I think non-co-ops could take "culture" classes, but I'm not sure.

Also, and don't take this the wrong way; I don't know calculus, but I believe your math is wrong. 1 + 6 + 2 <> 8.

Or is that the joke?... if so

They mean the same thing. <> is used in some languages to mean !=. It's like "less than or greater than" in my mind.
