Edited to actually include the video. I'm tired. Bedtime!

Re: Things that I love
I know it's kinda mean but I love to scare my daughters new boyfriends. Julie and I had to go rescue our girl Kylie and her car (simple fix lucky for me) at her new young fellas parents house. Anyhow he seems to be a fine sort but he was shakin in his boots and could barely speak to me and when I offered my hand he looked up at me with those " please don't eat me eyes" and when he took my hand he at first just grabbed my top two fingers like he could only shake half of my hand. His mom was picking on him too and he looked like he was about to run screaming any second. Most of the time I'm a bit self conscious about my size but sometimes it helps sort out the winners from the loosers, don't want any weenie son in laws!

Re: Things that I love
To this day I am sad that my dad was out of town when Mr. Sexy Pants came to pick me up for our first date. My brother tried to fill in, but freaked out at the thought of me dating and had to run away and hide in his bedroom.
On the plus side, in the five years since then Dad has acquired a shotgun, so Mr. Sexy Pants will get the full intimidation when it comes time to ask for my hand (whenever that happens).

I used to hate gravity because it would not let me fly. Now I realize it is gravity that lets me stand.

Re: Things that I love
My first boyfriend was terrified of my Dad and wouldn't even call the house phone! It was funny to me because my Dad's not even the intimidating kind. He does have a shot gun (that doesn't work), and has joked about it with my both of my sister's now husbands, but Will's been living with me now long enough to know he's not intimidating at all!

Re: Things that I love
Is... there? Playing the part of an overly-protective father might be overbearing or rude, but I wouldn't think it is necessarily sexist. I am interested in the prospect of being wrong, however.there's some seriously sexist s*** going on in this thread right now. I'm disappointed in you, pweb.

If it helps with the sexist stuff, I worry a lot more at the girls our son Jake brings around ! Lets say only 1 out of the last 15 we've met seemed somewhat wholesome and that one was just acting. We worry about Jake our only son the one that won't go to even a trade school and is still wild as hell.

Re: Things that I love
I'm honestly not seeing this has a daughter = property type thing. I'm seeing it as a Father being protective of their young child. I've seen the protective parent be both the Mother and the Father and it's not just to their daughters.

Guess I don't get it, I take some pride that my girls and all my best friends girls know if they ever have trouble with some "skid lid" all they have to do is call me.

Re: Things that I love
And to speak of it from the receiving end.... The first conversation I had with my husbands father when we first started dating involved him asking me what my intentions with his son were, threatening to shoot me with one of his plethora of shotguns/rifles if I hurt him, and then going on to tell embarrassing stories. Is it sexist? Or is it just a father being protective of his son? does it matter of the genders are reversed?
My father was never the intimidate type but I do remember him waiting up with the porch light on and the front door open waiting for me to get home from the few dates I went on in HS. Was that sexist? not it was my dad wanting to make sure I got home safe and sound.

(warning: discussion on a possibly sensitive topic)"Dad with a shotgun" jokes/reality/whatever = a)daughters as property b) daughters as victims of boyfriends - give them their own damn shotgun! and c) daughters without agency over own lives and choices
Sexist. as. s***.
The only one of those that strikes me as even vaguely on the mark with regards to this conversation is (b), and that doesn't strike me as sexist so much as it strikes me as realist approach to dealing with the real-world statistics of sexual violence. I can certainly say that for all of my female friends who are survivors of sexual assault, that I wish I had been there to protect them (or as second best, been near enough to intervene and leave their rapist a quadriplegic eunuch). And that's just me being a decent human being, without any parenting instincts getting involved.
Seems like maybe this is the wrong thread if we're going to carry on the conversation much longer though.

That sounds awesome, Steph! I want a book club but know I have picky taste, would probably get stressed by the expectation to read a book in an assignment type of way, and am not the greatest at booktalks...so, I never try to join others.

Re: Things that I love
My husband and I are now Thorns season ticket holders. We each bought each other ticket as birthday presents ( a little early for me but yay!) Super excited! And someday maybe we will get Timbers season tickets... but they cost A LOT more and there are never any available.
