I am actually going to write something, this year. Really.

Sigh. I've determined that Nanowrimo is not for me this year. Already have to much writing on my plate, and it is non-fiction and I've already started it. Plus our geekatplay tutorials. 2 birthdays, thanksgiving, and a toddler.

If I do Nano next year, it will mean that I have finished both the non-fiction book I'm writing AND the novel I will be starting this spring.

It has begun.

I forced myself to write before bed, because it's the first day, and there's no need to start off on the wrong foot. I squeaked out 349 words and I'm pretty sure that all of them suck.

But you know what? For once it's about quantity, not quality. My goal for tomorrow is to hit 2500, and hit 6000 by the end of the weekend. I've never done Nano before, so I don't know how realistic that it, but I aim to try.

How was everyone else's first day?

I pounded out about a thousand words between classes, today. Then, instead of continuing, I decided that I should go see We Own The Night (which, to be fair, was pretty powerful) for the birthday of my best friend's brother. So, I'm behind, but it's easy to catch up during the first week.

Kelly, I wouldn't be too worried if I were you. The first week is the easiest and you can build up a nice pad for the later weeks, when it's not as easy to find the words. Week Two is what I consider Hell Week in the NaNo world.

Anyway, off to write!

I pounded out 2000 after my classes, and then another 1500 just now. I'm not really planning on having any time tomorrow (Friday, that is), so I figure I should work ahead. It's pretty easy now, since I'm working off of an idea I actually started on a while back. I only got about eight Word-pages in, but, in keeping with the spirit of NaNo, I'm completely rewriting everything. It needed it, anyway, believe you me.

Anyone care to share their NaNo IDs, so we can keep tabs on each other outside of P-Web? Mine's Mich, of course.

I think I'm going to do NaNoWriMo. Ish. I'll write 50,000 in 30 days, it just won't be Nov 1-Nov 30th. Obviously. Since it's the 6th. My goal will be midnight on Dec 6th, and I'll start tomorrow.

By my count, by 12:00 am on Thursday, you should have 23338 words. I'm a tiny bit ahead: if you add 1667 to what I have today, I'll have 23881.

I just now realized what NaNoWriMo is.

I've heard of a bunch of people not doing NaNo because of the writer's strike. Pencils down means pencils down.

That's... odd. Because, like, no one makes any money from it, so not writing for the NaNo doesn't really make any kind of impact. It's like saying "I will wear my shoes on the wrong feet in protest!" No one else really cares except for you.

Some people manage to sell their stories, and there was one person of the day who is working on the first draft of a novel that has sold... so I think it would be fairer to say that "very few people" make any money out of it.

That still entails additional effort. You could strike by writing it and then refusing to sell it.

I agree. Not writing because of the strike seems stupid.

I delivered my lecture last Thursday. I'm counting 6500 words of polished original research delivered at a public lecture a worthy accomplishment. No way could I have done NaNo this year (again), but I'm sad I missed it.

Phew. Did it. Too bad I`m only about two-thirds done with the novel.

You could, but you don't have proof. Then again, you could start it at any time, finish, and then submit it to the site in November. But, well, it's more official. Or something.

Of course I could. But it's fun to suffer the deadline pressure with everyone else. Heck, sometimes it's fun to HAVE a deadline. It's like, I could go run 47km or whatever the distance is, but it's not the same as running in a marathon.

Whew. Thought I'd dredge through four pages of threads just to notify the interested few that I finally managed to finish my actual NaNoWriMo story. As previously estimated, at 50,000 I was only 2/3 through, with a final word count of 72,161.

In before "It took you one month to get through 2/3, and seven to do the rest?" So I took a break! It was a bad idea, but I think it ultimately helped me. Now it's time to let this thing stew in a desk drawer for a few more months, then edit it just in time for the NaNo again.

That's the thing about NaNovember ... it's all about beating the other people who write with you. It's about quantity more than quality. And because you're striving to get ahead of the pack, you end up doing it.

Just picking another month isn't QUITE the same thing.

Go you for finishing yours! I finished mine the first year, but since then I've just let them stew on computer hard drives. I should really find some of them again.

Crap! I have to finish rewriting my old one. Editing it was a lot more fun than just going through and copying what I wrote in a red pen.

Regardless, I'm taking 20 credits, doing freelance 3D work, and TAing a class (as well as working on the new Basque cultural center in Boise), and I'm going to do this thing. Again. So I expect a full forum of non-slackers!

As expected, the name is Mich on the website. I'm writing a steampunk novel this year, and am all read up on it.

I've gotten to the stage where it seems as if it wouldn't be November without attempting a novel.

Perhaps at some point I should stop ignoring them after the end of the month.

Just a notice to anyone on the edge:

A week or so ago all of the winners of the 2007 NaNoWriMo received an e-mail telling them that they've been wrangled a free printing of their novel from some website-or-other! So there, at last, is more motivation.

It has almost been a year, people. So, newbies and oldbies alike, who's in?

I am. This time I'm not only doing a first-person narrative (something I haven't done since, like, middle school), but I'm also trying to an unreliable, funny narrator, ala Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. In fact, that kind of noir-ish storytelling is a big influence on me this year.

I did it last year (didn't make 50k, though)

I may do it this year, if I can think of a good plot.

I have absolutely no ideas for a story, but I think I'm going to go for it anyway. Hopefully inspiration strikes between now and November.
