The only time I've ever seen ketchup chips is when a Canadian in my graduate program brought them (along with a few other Canadian junk foods) to our class. I tried them and was kind of like, "meh." I mean, they were good, but I didn't really understand the fuss.

However, the other day, I was actually eating a hot dog and potato chips and the ketchup got on the potato chips. And now I cannot fathom eating them any other way. (Note -- I hardly ever eat potato chips, so I'm not exactly pleased that I found something that makes them crazy delicious. But it does. Oh my gosh. Love.)

Hula hoops. I spent a few minutes playing with one in WalMart while I was perusing the bike inner tubes.

Paul made pizza tonight - deep dish with white sauce, potatoes, broccoli, bacon, chicken and two kinds of cheese.
It was super-yummy.

Also, Syphon, I know people who call that sauce "Cock Sauce".

I certainly don't!

Yeah, that's a lie. I even introduced my parents to the phrase.

Valuable insights from the blue that help me feel more even-keeled.

Good friends who share insights that help too.

Hanging out with a good friend for the first time in five years. That he just moved back to VT.

I love Ginny's random new words. The other day she pointed at a picture of a gorilla and said "Orilla!" Who taught her gorilla?? Paul and I have no recollection of teaching her what a gorilla is.

Ali. A million times, I love her, plus infinity. I love her this much *holds arms out*.

Summer Reading has made this week hell. Coworkers being on vacation for the start of it has made this week hell. Other coworkers playing on FB and eBay while I did as much as I could before opening made this week hell. Exhaustion-induced depression has made this week hell. Being ignored when I try using my phone has made this week hell (looking at you, AmeriDuck).

Ali going on a posting spree has made me happier than anything else and lo and behold, I'm actually grinning! That's right; the way to make me fall in love with you is to post, post, and post some more. I take it personally, even if it's not.

Listening to Tyler read Green Eggs and Ham to Kinley.

Have I posted anything about how well Tyler is reading? He's not even 4 yet and he's reading Nate the Great books all by himself! He probably could read Magic Treehouse books himself, but we read those together. I seriously hope kindergarten isn't too boring for him that he becomes a trouble maker. What's a kid to do during class when they are learning their letters and he's reading at a 3rd grade reading level before he even starts school?

what's denver's gifted program like, any charter schools he can elect to go to instead? Does your church quietly do scholarships for private schools (like Montessouri?), I know ours did but it wasn't common knowledge.
So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

To answer your questions: The gifted program starts in 2nd grade. There are 2 charter schools in the area, but it's not my favorite option. In the state of Colorado, one does not have to have a teaching certificate to teach at a charter school. I would prefer my children's teachers to be trained in working with children. There are other reasons I'm not choosing a charter, but I don't want to go into that right now. Our church does not have scholarships.

We did open enroll him into another school in our district. We interviewed the principle and he assured us help teaching Tyler at his level. I hope we can hold him to it. One thing we really like about the school we chose is the kindergarten schedule. Instead of going a 1/2 day everyday, he will go all day on Tuesday/Thursday and a 1/2 day on friday. The teachers really like this schedule because they can accomplish more teaching/learning. By the time you do all the welcome activities and leave time for recess and snack, there isn't much time to learn anything before it's the farewell activities when you only have a few hours. Doing those things only 3 times a week, instead of 5, leaves more time for actual learning. Besides, I'm going to like having him home for 2 whole days still. We can still go to grandmas or the zoo and he won't miss out.

We're hoping that with a good teacher and us being very involved in his education, he'll do fine. But, we'll just have to wait and see.

You could do what my parents did and get him independently tested. Check the requirements for the gifted programs in your district and see if there are any places to go for, say, the WISC assessment. I know that for me, the hours and days I got in Enrichment were sanity-saving.

Also, continue to challenge him at home. My mom also got us workbooks and activity books to keep us thinking, and I remember loving the reward of a sticker! ;) You're probably already thinking these things, I know.

Oh, and see if you can't dig up a copy of The Gifted Kid's Survival Guide (1 and 2). It's an old one, but I remember it having decent advice.

TODAY!!

-Got an insane amount of work done this morning
-Had a muffin waiting for me when I got to work
-World Cup <3 (even though I'm "watching" on gamecast because of work)
-Plans made for Monday that include cookie dough, breaking out the VCR, and the best friend I have left in this city
-Foolish October Plans may have just been salvaged
-Literal sign that might lead to the hopefully happy phone call later

I LOVE MY FARMER'S MARKET!
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

Holy hellaciousness, Batman! Literal sign and phone call did lead to happy outcome. That is three more hours in which I am not sleeping, not working, and not at home AND when soccer season starts, it need not interfere; I'll be able to do both. I don't recognize this little fact nearly often enough but sometimes, life is good. 8)

Heehee.

*****

And because I feel the need to balance my negativity:

I love biking. Even this morning can't dull that. I love the feeling of it and how I will feel so alive, even way too early in the morning, when I bike. It's a zillion times more effective than coffee. I love knowing I can push my body to do better and better. I love the feeling of triumph when I finally can make it up a hill without stopping. I love my bike and learning to maintain it and fix it. I love the little computer that lets me play math games in my head as I ride. I love feeling "professional" as I get my kit on.

I could make do with one reliable beater of a car and have 5 or 6 bikes, if I won the lottery.

To balance out my earlier, angrier post, and raise it one:

I love that I walked into the room earlier and my coworkers complimented me for no good reason. Warm fuzzies helped with the brother-frustration big time.

Following that, a patron called to pay a compliment for how we're running the programs this summer at my library. She started out with a coworker but asked to speak to me specifically. That felt damn good.

I'm pretty sure I've said this before but...

Pweb. I spent some time with the wayback machine today and went all the way back to some of the first threads of Ye Olde Pweb. I saw a thread where we introduced ourselves and one where I gave advice to v-girl about a boy problem. It made me very nostalgic. I can't believe it's been almost 10 years.

I love having time to do reading at work. I'm not always good at doing that at home, but I've got loads of empty time at work where, so long as I can make myself ready to help a customer in an instant, I can catch up on my reading.
