New State?

Postby elfprince13 » Wed Nov 07, 2012 12:58 am

Puerto Rico just voted to join the union! It has to pass congress and all that, but their ballot measure passed with 60% of voters supporting it.

Wow, really? I managed to completely miss this! That's kind of big news.

Yeah, it got flooded a bit with other election news. Obviously it's not official on our side yet, but on their side the voting looks pretty decisive.

Oh WOW.

A fifty-first state. That's just mind-boggling.

Okay, turns out it isn't that clear cut. Turns out only 54% support any sort of change, and of those, 65% want statehood. So, we'll see.

I was a little confused what that second part of that measure actually was. Was it "if you voted yes, what change do you want?" or "if we do change, what would you prefer?" It seems like it's the former, but I didn't think it was really clear in the couple articles that I read.

As far as I understand it, it was the latter. It seemed they had two separate votes. One was "should we change", and after that was a majority, they then voted to see how to change. But maybe I'm misreading it.

No, just one vote. First, change -yes or no. Then, those who answered yes went on to vote for statehood, independence, or some other option, I forget what it was called.

huh. are you sure? Because everywhere else I've read today is reporting that they've decide to pursue statehood, and the vote passed by a majority, and 55% * 65% is only 35%.

Never mind, i'm wrong. Two part ballot. Every one had to answer the second question. From HuffPo
But the results aren't so clear cut. It was a two-part ballot that first asked all voters if they favor the current status as a U.S. territory. Regardless of the answer, all voters then had the opportunity to choose in the second question from three options: statehood, independence or "sovereign free association," which would grant more autonomy to the island of nearly 4 million people.

More than 900,000 voters, or 54 percent, responded "no" to the first question, saying they were not content with the current status.

On the second question, only about 1.3 million voters made a choice. Of those, nearly 800,000, or 61 percent of those expressing an opinion, chose statehood –the first majority after three previous referendums on the issue over the past 45 years. Some 437,000 backed sovereign free association and 72,560 chose independence. Nearly 500,000, however, left that question blank.

Thanks for the clarification! :) I had actually misinterpreted the first description I read as well, and thought that the vote was held sequentially, rather than on the same ballot.
