Do you write letters?

Postby Eaquae Legit » Sat Oct 23, 2010 3:34 pm

I am writing letters right now. Just for the heck of it. Mostly they're to my sisters, but in the past I've written to friends as well.

There's just something about getting a physical letter that is unlike anything else. Even a postcard, if I'm too busy for a full-length missive. I tend to go in phases, where I'll write lots for a couple months and then forget about it for a while, but then go back to it. If somebody writes to me, I'm almost certain to write back.

But when email is so much easier and faster and costs nothing, few people seem to write anymore, despite the glee of getting a letter in the post.

Does anybody else write physical letters still? Would you be more likely to, if you knew you'd get one back?

I challenge you all to keep the postal service going and write a letter. Just one letter, though I encourage you to write more. It's really a lot of fun!

I wasn't sure how to vote because I absolutely love snail mail -it's one of life's greatest, but simplest, happiness-es- and I do love sending it as well but less for the letters and more for the excuse to have fun with the envelope. (I've started taking pictures of what I send, just in case they are tossed out, though I never ask if they are.)

I'm also terrible about responding unless I do it pretty much immediately after receiving something.

I will, however, write many letters that never get sent, that I don't think I intend to send when I start writing them.

Sidenote: This thread reminds me of Ekat-Hannah because we exchanged many, many letters over the course of the first year I was at Pweb. It's the most consistent I've ever been with a person.

I still have one you sent me in England. I hung it on my bulletin board until I left, then I brought it home with me.

I don't really do full letters, but for a while a friend and I would send postcards back and forth. I still have a bunch of them, some because the cards themselves had cool designs, but also because they're just fun to have and to experience. Everyone should do snailmail all the time. It's so much more satisfying to receive and read them and respond to.

I'm actually a voracious letter writer. Sometimes I fall into slumps (now, for instance), particularly when I rarely get responses. Slows my momentum a bit.

I LOVE receiving letters, and I actually really love to write them. I should get started again soon.

So, I'm not entirely sure I've ever written a letter, or anything that was sent in the mail, beyond a very short postcard or thank you notes.

This makes me sad.
So don't go worrying about me
It's not like I think about you constantly
So maybe I do, but that shouldn't affect
Your life anymore

I do love getting letters, but I always hit a major writer's block when it comes to writing them, which is unfortunate. And with the world of IM, generally most people I know are kept up to date with my comings and goings anyway. That said, there are a few who are never online, so perhaps I shall see about writing them.

I write letters from time to time. There is nothing more exciting than getting an actual letter in the mail. I wrote all my friends letters for Christmas for a couple years, but I just gave them do them with a plate of cookies instead of mailing them. Letters are somewhat annoying in the delay in response, but that doesn't always matter. They just really show that you're loved. Not only does some one spend the time to actually write you, they're willing to cough up the money for a stamp. That's a lot of love. =]

Beyond the pen pal I had in 4th grade, I have never received a letter.

The only letters I've written was to a pen pal in 3rd and 2nd grade, and that's it.

I send cards with handwritten notes, but I can't remember the last time I sent an actual letter. My sister lives in Australia and tends to include letters in with birthday/Christmas gifts, I really appreciate it.

If I write to you, will I get a letter back? Because I totally will. It may be full of random s***, but I will.

Ditto. Multiple Pwebbers have gotten birthday cards from me over the years that were blank inside except for my signature. They think that's weird but no one I know ever writes anything in birthday cards and the card itself says what needs to be said.
And with the world of IM, generally most people I know are kept up to date with my comings and goings anyway.
I still have the postcard Kim sent me from Africa that basically said "I just spoke to you on AIM so you already know everything but I'm going to fill up this card anyway."

Hence the "random s***" disclaimer. Letters, for me, aren't so much about the content, they're about getting a letter. It doesn't matter if the news is old - it's like opening a time capsule. But someone cared enough to sit down for an hour or so and write. I keep all the letters I get in a special folder.

The only people to send me letters after 1993 or so have been Pwebbers. I still have the ones from my old CA, meatspace friends (the pre-1993) but Pweb mail gets its own special box that I will someday finish decorating and then tape up, so as to preserve it's decorations (magazine clippings).

It's definitely a case of "It's the thought that counts" versus the glitz and freshness of the contents. More people need to recognize the beauty in simple things.

It may not be a proper letter, but I've just written an application letter for a job for January. I'm impressed and a bit amazed at the length of it.

I got a letter in the mail. :) It was painfully charming and perfect but then I got to the close and silly girl, Ali signed her first and last name, then reminded me that she was EL in parentheses. I laughed so hard at that, as though I needed the last name or Pweb reminder.
