Symphony of Science

I'm sure any PWebber worth his/her salt has seen these two videos, but why not.

Shame on you if you haven't already. Watch them both now, and go sit in the corner and think about what you've done.

Did you know that Bill Nye studied under Carl Sagan? Did you know that the Science Guy once wrote a paper on getting kids interested in math that led to the creation of the hit TV show NUMB3RS? Well, now you know.

"Glorious Dawn" is on my iPod and I love showing it to people who actually know who Carl Sagan is. Bonus points if they've watched Cosmos. He was such a likable guy with so many ideas, I wish he was still around, making more PBS specials.

A still more glorious dawn awaits...

A morning filled with 400 billion stars; the rising of the Milky Way...

Yeah, he's an icon for sure.

My hero is Sir Patrick Moore. Watching his half-hour "The Sky at Night" once a month is always a blast.

Sir Patrick Facts:
* was knighted for making astronomy popular and accessible
* has hosted TSaN for 52 years and missed one - ONE! - episode, because of a near-fatal bout of food poisoning
* is an accomplished xylophonist and composer (once accompanied Einstein, who played violin)
* wears a monocle, unironically
* was the Gamesmaster for 5 seasons
* co-authored an astronomy book with Dr. Brian May (yes, the guy from Queen)
* authored "Bureaucrats: How to Annoy Them"
* plays along with pranks directed at him

I mean seriously. This guy is awesome.

I love love love the music videos. I don't get why people think science is boring or unpoetic.

That is so very awesome and speaks to my love of medieval cosmography. The beauty and the movement of the arrangement of it all.

If anyone is still enjoying these songs, they've now got a total of six!

I keep worrying that one of them will step over the line into anti-religious sentiment. I know many of the people featured in the songs are strongly anti-religion, but I want to continue to enjoy the music simply as a celebration of science. Because science is cool. And I don't want the celebration to become just another venue for taking potshots at religion.

But hey! Cool new videos!

Neil deGrasse Tyson!
I know he didn't have much to do with it, but Tyson is always going to be tied to the killing of Pluto in my mind. He was really getting into the swing of being the face of science in America right when it happened, and he ended up having to explain the decision a couple times on TV, and like the weatherman it gets difficult to divorce the news from the messenger.

I *love* Symphony of Science! Carl Sagan has long been one of my heroes and Neil deGrasse Tyson has quickly become another.

I played a couple of these for some of my friends and they were unimpressed... I didn't talk to them for a month. One of them I haven't seen in two months. (I really don't care to ever see her again, not because she didn't appreciate this video but because she made some terribly racist comments the last time I saw her. Too bad she's my friend's wife, I'll probably have to tolerate her presence again.)

I quite love Neil deGrasse Tyson. There's a great hour-long interview he does with Stephen Colbert on youtube. I don't usually watch hour-long youtube videos, but when I do, it's Science. ;)

Also, did you know they're doing a remake of Cosmos? No joke! I'm very curious to see how that goes.

We Are All Connected is still my favourite Symphony of Science, but DINOSAURS gets major points for being, you know, DINOSAURS.
