I bought it for Donny's stocking a couple years back because he loves the movie. It comes with a little Linus blanket to wrap around it's base.

Don't worry, Jan. I'm not offended. I'm really amused, actually. (It's not the first time I've been compared to Lucy. Psychiatric help 5¢ and all.)

ETA On closer inspection, that's not mine. I got the tiny Barnes and Noble kit one.

Okay, now that I've started thinking about it, I'm getting irritated. You know, that whole anti-commercialism message would be a bit more credible from a cartoon that didn't have about five billion tie-ins with Hallmark.

Well, it was Charly Brown who was against commercialism in Christmas. Not Schultz

To be fair, it wasn't Schultz either. He was signed with a syndicate, they sold the rights to have things at Hallmark.

(Honestly, the other stuff doesn't bug me, just the tree)

Disagree, disagree, disagree!

(Unless they mean let kids take it and read it at lunch/recess/on their own time. But that's allowed so...)

There are no roly-eyes that look annoyed enough.

Here's a thought: if you want your kids to read the Bible, great! Read the Bible with them. And let other kids' parents do the same, if they so choose!

I do NOT get how people don't understand that separation of church and state benefits religious freedom - including their own! I'm a Christian, but I have no desire for my child to learn someone else's understanding of Christianity when I'm sending him to school to learn, you know, reading, math, science, etc.

Also, that kind of smug, simplified longing for the good old days irritates me.

I'm about as Christian as they come, but this kind of thing drives me crazy. They have nothing to do with one another. Kids don't need the bible in school to learn the bible.

My cousin, a public school teacher, posted that. I said I was a little anxious over someone in her position believing that. I have nothing against any person of religion teaching but I do have something against any person of religion thinking it's okay to impart their religious beliefs on others (in a school setting).

I don't want the Bible being taught in schools, except as literature or for comparative religious studies (and it's a damn shame we're turning out so many culturally illiterate kids these days because of the trend against talking about religion in any capacity). BUT, there's also really no mechanism in a lot of schools to teach kids how to act like human beings, and I think a lot of people see teaching morality from *somewhere* as an answer to that.

This I am okay with but, given the conversation I'm engaged in at the moment, this is not what these people want. They are insisting it is the word of God and thus should be in schools, case closed. When I say it would be best to keep all religious texts, in that manner, out of schools so as not to force any one religion on people, whether they believe in it, something else, or nothing, they're telling me I'm pushing my beliefs on them.

Um...yes but not in the same way, as I haven't once mentioned my religious beliefs, just my beliefs on respecting others.

"the bible's okay until you start reading the psalms and then it really wigs out." Rich Mullins

Psalm 137
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

4 How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?

5 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

7 Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.

8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
It starts off so beautifully and then at the end of that Psalm, the last verse of that Psalm is “How very blessed is the man who dashes the little one’s heads against the rocks.” This is not the sort of scripture you read at a pro-life meeting. But it’s in there none the less. Which is the thing about the Bible that’s why it always cracks me up when people say ‘Well in Dududududududududududududu it says’ you kinda go ‘Wow it says a lot of things in there.’ Proof texting is a very dangerous thing. I think if we were given the scriptures it was not so that we could prove that we were right about everything. If we were given the scriptures it was to humble us into realizing that God is right and the rest of us are just guessing. Which is what makes them so much fun to read, especially if you are not a fundamentalist.

I should walk away from this FB conversation. The opposing side just pulled out the "the US was founded on the Bible and Christian beliefs" card on me and it makes me want to cry.

I'm not saying don't believe! I'm saying in most contexts, bringing Christian beliefs into public schools is inappropriate!

Breathe, Alea. It's the internet. You've been wrong on it, too.

Seriously, Adam?

Of all the potentially controversial things in the Bible, you're going with the book of poetry? You know, if you think that's bad, there's this essay by Jonathan Swift I'd like to show you. He thought the English should eat Irish babies! For reals!

As for the teacher, who sounds like plenty of people I've known, grr. Due to a recent unfortunate online experience, I am finding myself totally unable to deal with fundamentalist holier than thou we know it all and are going to pat our backs for it while condemning you insanity.

And yeah, seriously, books of poetry are so much easier to work around than books of law.

Irrational irritation: dessert forks.
We use them as small people forks and they are invaluable as such.

Irritating:
DON'T describe yourself as exhausted/insanely busy/stressed. Of course you're each and every one of those things, we all are. And that's the point. parent has all the same demands, stresses and deadlines that you do plus we get to add perpetual responsibility for a small, needy, inquisitive, "me" machine to the 'to do' list. Have a bad enough week and you can crawl into bed Friday at 6 p.m. with a box of Chardonnay, some Hot Pockets and the remote control and not get up for three days. Your worst-case scenario is probably a nasty personal hygiene problem. If a couple of parents do the same thing, there's a good chance that someone will die.
from:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jd-robert ... lp00000003" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Um...sorry but I'm not going to sit around taking stock of who is a parent and who isn't when a friend asks me how I'm doing and I feel like answering honestly instead of with the regular "Fine!/Great!" response. Not having someone's life as my responsibility doesn't even begin to diminish the exhaustion and/or stress I have at times and I'm not apologizing for not having that responsibility by comparing my life to someone who does and saying, "It could be worse." Of course it can. My exhaustion and stress are still very real to me; don't want to hear it, don't ask how I am.

I had to either reschedule my doctor appointment for Monday or see someone in the practice other than my doctor.

Because he has an "emergency" surgery that day. I'm sorry, I don't think that word means what you think it means. If its an emergency, it should need taking care of now. If it can wait til Monday, it can wait another hour for my appointment which has been on the books for 4 weeks.

Ridiculous.

I decided to keep my time slot with the nurse practitioner. But I am seething.

I am casually a part of a book club with a bunch of my friends. It's casual for me because Brian typically works in the evening, so I can't attend on a regular basis.

For the last 3 years, I have submitted Ender's Game during the selection process for the year's list. It's always been turned down in the past. This year, they actually selected it! I was SO excited to hear that my book was picked (I want there, of course, since Brian works) and I anxiously awaited the email containing the list for the year so I knew when to get a baby sitter. I was not going to miss Ender's Game in book club!

I got the email today. The date of Ender's Game discussion? September 19th. Talk Like a Pirate Day. (aka, Brian's big deal holiday.)

I'm so irritated! And of course, since I'm not a ”regular” at book club, I have no right to ask them change it.

Grrrrrrr!

Dumbest, most irrational irritation ever:

Atty has three teeth on top and three on bottom, and when he gives a toothy grin, it's not symmetrical anymore. I wish he'd get a fourth tooth on top on the other side, already.

(I have a thing about symmetry, okay? When I take eggs from the carton, I do it symmetrically.)

(Also, I still adore his grins, don't get me wrong.)

I do the same thing with eggs. Also, with the wedges in trivial pursuit. I put them in (and redo them, as the game progresses) symmetrically.

I can only imagine one Trivial Pursuit wedge set-up that would result in it not being symmetrical: Wedge, empty, wedge, wedge, empty, empty.

Are there others?
