There is a difference between accepting a belief as valid--or even as reasonable--and believing it yourself. Acceptance is not agreement. And Scott, don't worry--you'll learn the truth about eriador soon enough. Since my words started this semantic argument, I will attempt to end it. Eriador is loc...

Dune
I didn't know where to post this, tried Book Club but it said moderators only. So anyway, I saw the movie 1984 movie DUNE not too long ago and I loved it. I am curious about the book by Frank Herbert. Has anyone here read DUNE and would you recommend it to an OSC fan such as myself? Also, I have Net...

Seriously, I am a strong Christian, please tolerate me. I accept your different views on God. One of those clauses is a lie. I don't see how those 2 statements are even contradictory. The 1st statement just means I believe strongly that God exists and that Jesus is his Son. The 2nd statement just m...

Scott, do you believe in any medicine at all? Because if you do, that sounds like a contradiction. Yes I do believe in medicine, I see no contradiction at all. Unnatural is something that is contrary to the laws of nature, like immortality would be. I never said I was against all things that are un...

Re: "Different views on God"
I said "I accept your different views on God" meaning I accept the right to have any view on God.Scott's post in the Fundies thread made me think about this.
You can believe God does not exist.
You can believe in Allah.
I accept your different beliefs, but I may not agree with them.

Jota, I would disagree. I think that life absolutely has meaning. I don't believe that there is some higher meaning, but there's a difference between saying that there is no higher, god-given meaning and that there is no meaning at all. I'm sorry but I wanted to hear about personal meaning of life....

I am no molecular biologist but from my understanding, our cells replicate by dividing. Make copies of themselves. Much like recording VHS tapes, each subsequent copy is fuzzier, hence over time our cells deteriorate. (I don't know, mitochondria, RNA whatever in the cells) I think it is possible to ...

Re: A question for Catholics
Yes, I am Catholic and this is how I think most Catholics feel.I mean, I understand that if it's morally wrong it's morally wrong, but does this really reflect how most Catholics feel about this? Honest question.

Meaning of life
This isn't a thread about the general concept of the meaning of life, it's more about personal meaning. I want meaning in my life. I am not suicidal, depressed or even sad. I just want to have a sense of purpose. I believe each person has their own unique sense of personal meaning. I don't have chil...

Re: magic. hart's. empire.
1. Magic Street 2. Empire 3. Hart's Hope But that's just me. I loved tracking the Christian Allegory in Magic Street, and I'm really into Urban Fantasy in general. I don't read military-spy stuff at all, unless it's OSC. And Hart's Hope is the kind of Myth/Mystic thing I also don't get. (again, wor...

I want to shake them by their shoulders and tell them that they ought to know better than to act like that! I am Christian, tolerate me...

Human giants are only so because they are made of so many people. You never know: maybe some of your mates is to become the next Newton, and you are stimulating them, or you did stimulate them in the past. Maybe even second hand. The great achievements of mankind are surely individual, but at the s...

I think teachers take too much individual responsibilities for their students. The school board or administration have given that policy a lot of thought and I would follow it, but with my own discretions. I don't know what level you teach, but the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Students who suck (f...

My theory is that the belief in something higher is connected with the evolution of human thinking. I agree with this. I think the belief in something higher is a natural progression with human life. If there was sentient life elsewhere in the universe, I would guarantee the majority of them believ...

Who matters?
On the grand scale of human civilization, I think the vast majority of us don't matter. I think the only ones who do matter are the inventors and the researchers who's work actually advance society. I'm speaking of the Einstein's, Edison's, scientists and researchers who invent or improve. The rest ...

Pro what?
Are you Pro-life or Pro-choice? Just a simple one word answer will do, but further explanations are appreciated. Me: Pro-choice. I used to be hardcore pro-life but life has a way of changing viewpoints. I fully understand the Pro-life arguments, I just think Pro-choice is for the greater good of soc...

tell manager
I would probably join in for the free smoothies myself, but I am a bad person. The way I see it, doing nothing at all is a lesser form of making with some free goods. I voted tell the manager because you seem like an ethical guy. I would approach the manager and simply ask if you could help yourself...

ontological argument
St. Anselm's ontological argument: "God, by definition, is that which a greater cannot be thought. God exists in the understanding. If God exists in the understanding, we could imagine Him to be greater by existing in reality. Therefore, God must exist." Assuming you don't believe, you can...
