My meaning is that you should find independent research that verifies this information. Members of NORML are dedicated to legalization - and just like any other special interest group, they are going to skew the data and conclusions to their own agenda.

In addition, the Society for Neuroscience wasn't saying AT ALL that smoking marijuana doesn't kill brain cells - what they said was that treating certain neural diseases (like Parkinsons and ALS) with treatments BASED on cannibinoids could grow brain cells. There is a HUGE difference between using a substance recreationally and a medicine-treatment using compunds LIKE that substance. Like the fact that morphine is not the same as heroin. Get it?

Yeah, you have a point. But two problems interfere with it:

1) In the U.S., studying marijuana is illegal. So any serious scientists don't touch it for fear of losing their careers, unless they dedicate their careers to it. That's what NORML has done. So, in a way, NORML is the only real place to get genuine statistics. I wish it weren't so.

However, in and of itself, the fact that the American government doesn't want marijuana studied, should tell you they're trying to hide the truth.

2) For the messages I've posted to this forum, I haven't really done any additional research. I just simply say things mostly off the top of my head, re-read, and post. I KNOW this isn't an effective way of arguing, but I don't have the time to do in-depth research for every post I make here SOO, for that sort of thing, people will have to check out my blog which is quite often of the issues we've debated here.

America has a lot of them, though. And most countries prohibit the study of marijuana. The only countries that don't are smallish ones, generally lacking many serious scientists.

I am not posting this to insult you or belittle you, it just seems to me that you haven't fully learned how to spot or explain logical fallicies, and could use the lessons in this class. Well, I find that I do much better expressing what I'm trying to say when people are challenging my statements and requesting clarification. Writing it all out as a single piece, I feel that I do much more poorly.

Well, some of the issue is that the "facts" you're stating are just plain wrong. So would you be using facts that are, well, facts if you weren't in a debate?

I haven't said very much if anything that was proven untrue, you just are against my opinion, so you're saying my facts are wrong. From my standpoint, it looks like yours are.

Cannabis is just a plant... how are they prohibiting research on a plant, specially a plant that has a psychotropic chemical (that is, a chemical that is potentially useful in medicine).

And i can tell you that Spain allows it, and Spain does have scientist (we don't have money, but that's another matter altogether).

Don't worry about it Jota - he's being an idiot. Since he's clearly not trying at all, I don't feel bad insulting him.

The US does not prohibit research or study on it. Like the other common research/study misconception about the US (stem cells), the government merely prohibits the use of federal money to fund it. Meaning that they are studied and researched, simply without the aid of federal funds. While it would be nice to have tax dollars going to a potentially medically worthy cause, it's neither necessary nor relevant to the discussion.

For some reason the mindset of companies over here (Spain, i mean) is different. Many CEOs think that their companies should work the same way they have always worked... reseaching would only make them obsolete ( ).
Yeah, so sad. About a century ago, a Spanish philosopher summarized this mindset "Let the others invent!".
Over here, if you cut public money on research... you'd have no research.
