i define marketing as: "the art of bullshitting: for those that are too lazy to do real business courses"

marketing math isn't really a distortion of of math, but rather picking and choosing math that will supposedly aid in the marketing profession.

and it is impossible to put a product or service on the market without marketing. even by choosing not to advertise, you are making a marketing decision.

i don't like marketing, but it seems like one of those fields that will always be needed, by every business. so there will always be marketing positions available. aside from that, i have a loose moral structure.

my education in marketing was really only helpful to me by teaching me the terms used in the marketing field, and it looks good on a resume. i already knew how to bullshit. :D

Swtiching out of Old English Philology, which is reportedly the course of DEATH, and into Medieval Social History.

Well, I already took Japanese, so I know all the characters in Mandarin, and i guess it's not exactly calc...it's pre-calc and discrete math, but we go into basic calc some...anyway, I don't think i've learned anything in any math class since 9th grade...2 years ago...

Every single one? Wow. And anyway, I hear/thought that the various tones you have to use are the real bitch. Well, at least you've got some head start.

You know there's something wrong when your teacher doesn't even pretend that you're going to be able to use whatever you're learning in real life.

Just a thought:

"Real Life"? What about learning for the sake of learning? What about liking math for math's sake and not for it's usefullness?

(I admit I'm not one of those people, but I they are around, just like people who enjoy reading for the sake of reading, not so that it applies to "real life")

That's me. Every application of linguistics that could be practical, I'm really not interested in (translation, gov't work, etc.)... nope, I'm going for a PhD in the theoretical stuff nobody outside universities cares about.

And I chose to take calculus over statistics... less useful, more fun.

So... I know something's right when my teacher doesn't even pretend that we're going to be able to use whatever we're learning in real life. :D

well, the concept of high school is to prepare you for college and a professional life. love for math and really any other subject should be instilled before high school. higher and less used math functions and theories shouldn't even be a part of the standard curriculum. i believe they should only be offered as an elective style class or even AP for those math lovin' people who plan on making math part of their professional or personal life.

Woohoo! That'd be me, too. I want to do historical linguistics, and really, I see professorship and research as real life. I'm hoping it'll be my real life, anyway. Who cares if it doesn't apply to the vast majority of the population because it applies to me and those I hope to teach and learn with. So Latin, Etymology, Morphology, et cetera, all apply to my real life.

I'm a little confused by this comment. Liking math for the sake of learning is fine, but why is so much of it required? I've already forgotten most of the multivariable calculus I learned last semester (I was trying to explain some things to someone who asked me some multivar questions, and there was a lot I just plain couldn't remember), and there's still a few more classes to go.

I do agree with favoring Calc over Stat, though. The little Stat I've seen in classes so far is just disgusting, which is slightly worse than the just boringness and pointlessness of Calc.

Its time to pick classes for next sememster!
I just spent a couple of hours choosing, and I think this is where I am:

Fiction Writing
Inquiry Into the Cognitive Sciences
Cognitive Psychology
Beginning Arabic
African Civilizations to 1800

Everything pertains to a possible major except for Fiction Writing, so I think I made pretty good choices.

I found out this week that I have to take a stat class. Bah!

...and another humanities course. Bah!

At least, those are pretty much the only remaining requirements before I can take pretty much anything I want in CS. Yay!

So aside from my design classes next semester:

Graphic Design I
Advertising I
Type III
Silkscreening and Print-Making

And my fun class:

History of Film I (Silent to WWII)

I need one more fun humanities class, and I just can't decide. So of course, I'm turning it to Pweb. Here are my options:

-Literature of Popular Culture
-International Novels
-Cities Across Cultures
-Psychology Through Film
-The Artist in Fiction and Film
-The Romantic Vision
-Visual Culture & Everyday Life
-Studies in Creativity/Society
-World Literature II

What do y'all think?

you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

ooh, i'm taking new classes!

for my last quarter of my undergraduate degree:

anatomy 199: introductory anatomy. get to look at cadavers and memorize all the structures in your body. i took this class for fun, and it's mostly me and a ton of freshmen. they can't believe i would take this class for fun.

history 530. history of ancient israel. i'm taking this class with my favorite professor EVER. he is awesome. plus i have several friends in the class, which makes it a fun time. the extensive use of biblical texts in the class is what makes it so interesting for me.

music 101. guitar. that's right, i am learning some chords and some basic songs... yay! maybe i will have to be g-girl...?

edupaes 150. weight-lifting. finally learning how to put a strength-training program into effect.

all fun classes for my last quarter. :)

This summer I'm taking Medieval British Palaeography, and it looks awesome. I'm pretty excited.

I'm hoping I don't need to take MA Latin, though. *fingers crossed*

Last classes until I have my associates:

Speech 111 - Public Speaking

Yoga (Gotta have that PE, I'm looking forward to it though)
Geology of Pacific NW - A run of the mill science with small lab, easy.

Janelle-- I'd take World Novels... but Literature of Pop Culture sounds good, too.

My Classes:

MWF:
10AM- ENGL 175- Global Literatures in English
11 AM- BIOE 420- Biosystems Transport and Reaction Processes
1 PM- ENGL 443- Austen Only

TR:
9:25- ENGL 357- Origins of the Postmodern
10:50- BIOE 455- Systems Biology and Molecular Design
1-6PM- BIOE 443- Bioprocessing Lab Module (First 6 weeks of semester)

I'm not thrilled about the ENGL 175, but, it fills all the requirements I need for the ENGL major. However, it kills my no classes that actually meet on Friday think I had going with with 420 and 443. I also find it amusing that I have 2 classes that are number 443 in their departments. :)

So, what classes are you guys taking this quarter/semester?

Right now, and for most of the year, I'm taking:
Histology/microanatomy--looking in microscopes, being able to identify any tissue in your body.
Gross anatomy--aka dissecting a human... pretty cool!
Biochem--memorizing metabolic processes, boring but easy.
Physiology--so far, the worst class ever. I thought I would love it, but no.
Class on how to be a doctor, interviewing, ethics, physical examination, etc.

I take all of those until April, and then I take neuroanatomy for 6 weeks, and then I'm done for the year!

I just registered, and I'm pretty happy with my schedule! Of course, thats always the case until I start actually taking the courses. Now my schedule has become soo specialized...it makes me nervous! But here they are:

Introductory Psychological Statistics
Abnormal Psychology: The Major Mental Disorders
Beginning Arabic II
African Studies: An Introduction
Introduction to International and Area Studies
Islamic History, 622-1200

My current classes:

ENGLISH, LEVEL 400 -- STRUCTURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Grammar is hot.

ENGLISH, LEVEL 300 -- ROMANTIC AND VICTORIAN LITERATURE
Mmm, English literature.

ENGLISH, LEVEL 300 -- AMERICAN LITERATURE I
We read American literature written between the landing at Plymouth and the Civil War.

HISTORY, LEVEL 400 -- SENIOR THESIS
I'm writing a thesis for Honors (History degree) regarding the (il)legality of creating the US Constitution, "ratifying" it, and putting it into effect.

LAW, LEVEL 400 -- SENIOR THESIS
I'm writing a thesis for Honors (Political Studies degree) regarding the 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

I registered for classes last week and I'm pretty content with my schedule.

ENGLISH, LEVEL 400 -- OLD ENGLISH
We're required to take two level 300 courses in Old English, but are allowed to take another level 400 course in it at our "sister" school.

HISTORY, LEVEL 400 -- LEGENDS OF THE COLLEGE
I'm doing an internship with the President of the College and the History Department Chair, wherein I basically live in our Archive, collecting (and mostly refuting) college legends and myths.

LAW, LEVEL 300 -- CONSTITUTIONAL LAW
That's pretty straightforward.

HISTORY, LEVEL 400 -- POLITICAL REVOLUTIONS OF LATIN AMERICA
Again, pretty straightforward.

ENGLISH, LEVEL 300 -- ADVANCED FICTION WRITING
Again, pretty straightforward. We write 2,000-3,000 words per class period.

ENGLISH, LEVEL 400 -- YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE
We read novels for young adults. And talk about them. And stuff.

Finishing:

CS 3750 - Software Engineering
CS 3550 - Database
FRCH 2010 - 2nd year French I (my last class to fulfill gen. ed. req. w00t! )
CS 4110 - Computer Theory (this actually has a longer name, but Computer Theory is a more descriptive title, in my opinion.)

by the way - the teacher and the other students say we will never use Computer Theory. The department chair (who teaches Software Engineering, and several of the students are in both these classes) says that businesses want us to take this class. I, supporting his defense said, "Yeah, I've used that class just yesterday! I was imagining I was a Turing Machine!"

"..."

Anyway, Next Semester:

CS 4750 - Advanced Software Engineering
CS 3230 - Internet Multimedia Using Java
MATH 1220 - Calculus II

-- And then I get my Bachelor's Degree! Yay!
A signature so short, it's

Probably PhD/Level III Latin (not sure yet what they call it), and almost certainly palaeography.

Other than that, research!

Not that I would know, but I don't think that's completely true, unless you somehow have different majors for theory and systems, or something. "Computer Science" predates computers, so they musta been doing something back then.

I also had no idea you were a CS guy! :stoned:
MATH 1220 - Calculus II
You only have to take two levels of calc? Grr.

Anyway, off the top of my head:

-- Ethical issues in CS (or something like that; this class is going to be PAIN)
-- Programming studio
-- Lang & Compilers
-- Computer Organization
-- Statistics (also probably pain)

-Regular highschool classes- aka 4 unit math, 5 + unit English..
-Theater- 5 units
-Computer Programming (actually Java, plus a bit of HTML)- 5 + unit

(we don't have levels, we have studying units- 3 units, 4 units, 5 units- 5 units is the regular hardest class, of which you had to take at least too classes of; there's also 5 +, which is the hardest possible on that subject, and counts as one of your 5 unit classes. I'm good at programming, though, so I chose it in hardest)

Who leaves Atlantis off the maps? Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?
We do! We do!

We do, we do!

Currently
MATH 093 - Pre-Algebra
IS 115 - Intro to Programming
ANIM 273B - Fundamental 3d Computer Animation
AST 101 - General Astronomy

Next Semester
CIT 151 - Beginning Web Development (Distance Learning)
GRC 103 - Introduction to Computer Graphics
HHP 123B - Introduction to the Human Body
MATH 097 - Elementary and Intermediate Algebra
  • I will likely drop GRC 103 for CIT 130 - Beginning Java as the book I have now is the same one used in that class.

I am trying to decide if I should have ANIM 240B - Intermediate 3D Computer Animation just to get a full year. The teacher I have this semester says that the only teacher for the Advanced, Character Modeling, and other 3D classes is "a total hard ass" and that "the rumors are all true".

I want to take other programming classes but the only teacher for said classes is apparently pretty horrible. I'm hoping that if I keep putting it off that a better teacher will step up... though maybe I'll decide to transfer to another college sometime in the future.

Web Design is a total joke.. I've been doing that for 11 years now and spent several years doing it for under-the-table pay. Intro to Computer graphics to fill a spot. Java because I don't know it and I'm looking to get a CS-Programming degree. Human Body because it interests me. Math because I need it and I want to know it.

I'm actually kind of weird in that I want to do a CS-Programming degree, but because that seems to be such a bloated field I also want to get something in the webdesign/server side coding end of things as well as I've done a lot of work in that for the last 8 years. My ideal place would obviously (because of the 3d modeling :P) be something on the game design end (done some hobby from-scratch game programming and graphics), but that's just a dream as the game field is even more bloated than the general programming field. On top of that, I'm also interested in so much else. Physics, psychology, astronomy, biology... all so interesting. I should just be a professional student.
Don't mock my inability to add numbers, I never lerned it proper good. I no how to add now, tho!
