Do I really sound like that?
I do not like how I sound (also, I had to grab a book off the ground because whenever I read something off the screen, there was this weird, banging noise):

Jan -- frankly, you sound somewhat North Dakotan to my ear. Midwestern, at least. (Which is to say, totally natural.) Actually, your voice sounds something like how my voice sounds, except higher. (I think. I will do just about anything to avoid hearing my voice recorded. Which is not to say I don't like yours!!)
Paul, however, sounds -- well, not only stereotypically Canadian, but, also, made me hear Kermit doing Muppet News Reporting on Sesame Street going, "Hi-ho! Kermit the Fro-o-og here..." In other words, I just realized that Kermit seems to have a bit of a similar accent.
Everyone has nice voices, really, though. Although, none of you sound like I imagined. But, really, I've never imagined people's voices before. There's just a setting in tone my head goes to depending on the nature of what I'm reading.
It's so startling to hear pwebbers talk, for me. You all seem so much realer. I'm so used to text-voices.

*grumbles* I get to be the one weirdo who doesn't use vocaroo. For some reason, the static-y stuff made my voice totally inaudible, which is crazy, since it works just fine on "Sound Recorder."
But here's the uploaded wav file.

I suppose I could have been more specific, in that you clearly have different accents. The difference you may hear between Paul's and my voice is the Ontario/Saskatchewan difference.
meg, I'm too used to thinking of you as a male, even though I know you aren't. I seriously correct myself every single time I see your post. Females using male avatars, sheesh.
And Syphon, for the record, I lol'd.

Everyone sounds what I'd call normal, which I suppose would be American, to me in this.. But even when I went to Canada nearly everyone seemed to not have an accent. Or I suppose to not have an unusual accent.

but...but...her avatar was Starbuck before this one. Starbuck's a chick! Also, Meg is totally a girl's name.
This doesn't surprise me at all - we only lived a couple hours from each other, after all.Jan -- frankly, you sound somewhat North Dakotan to my ear. Midwestern, at least. Good gracious, Jeff, I wasn't expecting that at all. Your voice isn't Josh-deep but it's definitely deep.
Paul = Very Canadian and I think my ovary twitched over Ginny.
Meagan, I was expecting a girl but I can't quite put my finger on how you were off from what I was expecting.
Syphoney-baloney: "There's a snake in my boots!"
Kelsey: yours wouldn't work for me without downloading Quicktime (it flat out refused to download so I could listen on something else) and I download QT for nobody/nothing.
Those were fun. *waits for more*

Jan and Paul, I almost died of a cute attack when I heard Ginny. Seriously adorable!
Everyone sounds about what I expected, except for some reason Jan. I don't quite know what I imagined your voice to sound like, but it was completely surprising. Also, i'm not even sure I ever imagined Paul having a voice, so his was kinda uprising too.

Nomi, I plugged headphones into my mic jack; I don't know if that did anything at all but it seemed to cut down on the static that I got trying with the built-in laptop mic.
I think a good number of people have suffered through hearing me talk on the phone but for those who haven't:

Interesting. Although I'm not doing that again, I will assume the difference is due to the use of headphones as a substitute mic. Following that assumption, I'm going to go back to pretending I sound like my head-voice to everyone so I don't turn into a mute when I go back to work Tuesday.

I don't know what you have to worry about, your phone voice is very nice. Some people I have a really hard time understanding over the phone, but never you.

It is interesting to me how so many people hate their voice, but I've yet to run across a voice that is terrible sounding to me. As such, I guess we're all just being silly about how bad our voices are; they're actually not bad at all and we're just very put off by how different it sounds when we hear it back.
I wonder why our voices sound different when we hear it back versus hearing it when we talk.

Haha, I do conflate people & their avatars (even with some of my now close friends who have hung out with me extensively...yeah, when I'm online, I kind of do think of them as their avatar....) so I do understand. I'd like to think I pick my avatars mostly on like of said subject/character/show/whichever, not simply attraction to said actor, lol.
meg, I'm too used to thinking of you as a male, even though I know you aren't. I seriously correct myself every single time I see your post. Females using male avatars, sheesh.
.
I don't like my voice because it sounds so measured and articulate to me but then when I hear it played back, it sounds like a pitchy valley girl if i'm not just reading something. Though I have gotten much, much better about that.
I also think Wil has a future career in voice overs/movie trailers.

I'll try to do this monday morning because I don't think my laptop has a mic, I'll have to make do with the equipment at work for recording VO.
ETA. my laptop does have a mic, but the quality is not good enough for me.

Edit: some real responses
Mich: your voice sounds like you look and generally come across as to me. Which is to say, awesome. But man, that recording... *air woosh* "here it goessSSS"

They do, but as Alea has demonstrated, most headphones (maybe even external speakers? I've never tried) can also work as mics.Do most laptops have a built-in microphone somewhere or are you guys all using some add on microphone?
I considered this when I heard yours, but dismissed it as I prefer you like this all the time. And you sound pretty much like I expected / as you should.ETA: Starlooker, it is possible that I sound like a children's tv program to you because I was talking to my child.

I finally listened to them all.
Jan, you didn't sound especially Canadian to me until you said the non-aboot version of about. Your regular "about" still sounds like a fairly Canadian "aboot".

I would put my voicenote up here,(from that long ago thread) but I was taking requests for what to say and a girl wanted me to say something along the lines of "*insert name*I love pets and the link makes no sense now rawr : D and that's my voice"
Needless to say, I probably sound really creepy and wouldn't want that to be the first things you guys think of whenever you think of my voice...
I'll record a new one when I lose laziness....
what do you guys want me to say?

As probably one of the very few oldbies who haven't heard your voice - I was surprised! You didn't sound like I imagined. Then again, it was a very short clip.

I found I tend to imagine everything I read on the Internet in a fairly deep woman's voice (not terribly deep, just kind of deeper than my own), or an average guy's voice. So not too deep and not too high. Baritone? But everyone is initially considered in that voice. The only time it's not like that is when I've spent considerable amount of time in real life talking to the person.

And apparently I don't sound like myself in it, though I can't see there being that large a difference. Since I couldn't get a longer one with Vocaroo yesterday, no matter what I did with myself or the settings on the computer, I have since tried with my digital camera. It is technically video but there's nothing of me in it besides my voice. I don't know if it's any closer to my phone voice as Fred and everyone else has heard it but it's my last attempt; the next time you hear me better be in person. Then again, it was a very short clip.
