Well, in this part of the country the red squirrels get into attics and cause a lot of destruction. I guess they can't help it, they are just born that way! :P

You hate squirrels?? I mean, I can understand not liking those mean, destructive, little red squirrels...but regular, cute, grey squirrels? I didn't think anyone hated them.
Oh, but I do. There's a story behind it but I don't feel like telling it at the moment (though I may have told it on Pweb before, I don't remember). If it makes you feel better, I don't hate them as much now as I did years ago.

One of my flatmates hates squirrels, and before I heard that, I never knew anyone that hated them, either. If we're ever with him outside and we point out a squirrel, he'll start loudly cursing at them.

Really awesome and interesting and totally relevant short story. Loved it! :D

otoh, it may be a bad idea to post that if it gets Thomas interested in experimenting with gifs. ;)

You know that song? "Jizzed In My Pants"?

I'm sure you've seen it. I'm sure a few of you found it disgusting. Good, this will be all the better.

When I found http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page , I metaphorically jizzed in my pants. It is that awesome.

Why? Well, often times when I'm needing information on something, such as a mathematical topic like the quadratic formula or polynomials or something, I visit wikipedia. However, when this happens, I often spend more time going WTF?! more than I spend time learning anything about what I am looking up. You literally need to be proficient in the topic to understand it. I feel dumber having read the article.

NO MORE! Now, at SIMPLE.WIKIPEDIA.ORG you can quickly and easily learn about a topic in plain English, with no bullshit attached. Just straight to the point, no frills English.

A sample article about the y-intercept of a graph!

From Wikipedia:

"... the y-intercept of a function is the y-value of the point at which it intersects the line x=0 (the y-axis). Thus, if the function is specified in form y = f(x), the y-intercept is easy to find by calculating f(0). For example, in linear equations that are in the "slope-intercept" form of y = mx + b, the value of b is the y-intercept. In general, in polynomial expressions of form y = P(x), where P is a polynomial, the constant term is the y-intercept of the polynomial. This is because all the other terms contain x and thus evaluate to zero when finding P(0)."

From Simple Wikipedia:

"The y-intercept of a line on a graph is where the line touches (or intercepts) the y-axis (the numbered line going straight up). If the equation of the line is y = mx + c, the y-intercept will be the point where x = 0. Because 0 times anything is just 0, y = c. This is why c is the y-intercept."

Simple, right? I know, it really is SIMPLE!

(Yes, I found this from xkcd today. I am excited.)

given your timing in posting that, I didn't have to read to the bottom of your post to realize you're a fellow xkcd lover. I've already added a "simple wikipedia" search to my address bar shortcuts (along with google, youtube, and regular wikipedia)

The coffee shop has been open less than a week. So far the customers are mostly couples and women.
I find that hard to believe. I might pick up a coffee habit if one opened around me.

I keep walking around my house, randomly saying "Dohl-freaking-house, Dollhouse!"

Sorry, Kelly, but I've never been a fan of Eliza Dushku; then again, I've only seen her in Bring It On, Buffy if she was in that (can't remember), and now this show. I think she's terrible at conveying anything other than Loud or Sexy (if she keeps her mouth shut).

Her handler, on the other hand, is a character I can appreciate. In fact, Boyd and Dr. Saunders are probably the only two (regular) characters I like.

Oh, and I was spoiled on who is playing Alpha, so I <3 him, too.

I spent part of Thursday or Friday organizing office supplies in the computer room and I am not kidding when I say I not only had fun doing it, but I felt soothed or relieved or something from knowing "This is where I find [supply]."

I will totally concede that Eliza is best when type-cast. But I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. I LOVED Faith (her character on Buffy and Angel) and thought she gave a pretty nuanced performance as her character evolved in later seasons.

I also totally cop to loving Bring it On for reasons I can't justify. I loooove the line "I hate to be predictable, but I don't give a s***!"

And I do love Boyd and Dr. Saunders. Yay Amy Acker!

I am liking Dollhouse so far but I must admit that I think it would be better with someone other than Eliza Dushku. I have never seen her in anything else and I just don't find her to be a very good actor.

I'm trying to like Dollhouse, but it's just too humourless. The best thing about Joss is his humour and his good dialogue. Dollhouse has neither. But I'll keep watching to see if it gets better. I'll give it 4 or 5 more episodes.

Also, as much as I LOVED Eliza as Faith on Buffy, she has one character and this show makes that painfully obvious.

on a related note, Morena Baccarin is the only one of the Firefly women I've seen playing a substantially different character from her Firefly role (haven't seen enough of Gina Torres to tell), but Jewel Staite's character as Doctor Keller in SGA and Summer's as Cameron in TSCC are remarkably similar to Kaylee and River in Firefly.

Best place to put these two things, I suppose. First and foremost... the best damn program I've found recently. You know how Linux does this thing where, basically, a program can't modify other files of other programs or system files without your permission? You know how Windows doesn't do this?

http://www.sandboxie.com/

Basically, you can run programs within a "sandbox". Meaning, they can not modify system files or permanently modify the programs own files. You run Firefox or Thunderbird always sandboxed, and nothing can happen to the rest of your computer. You can run a keygen/crack/suspicious program sandboxed, and it will not spread a virus to the rest of your system. If something is suspicious, you just kill the sandbox and all associated programs, files, folders, and memory locations are cleared. A program that is running sandboxed, such as Firefox, if it requires to you to execute a program, that program will also start up sandboxed. You can also make it so certain programs always run sandboxed (like Firefox, Thunderbird), and certain drives or folders are always executed within a sandbox. For example, you can make it so your CD/DVD drive ( D: ) always runs within a sandbox... to prevent the spreading of viruses or rootkits from the CD to the rest of the PC when autorun programs are executed automatically. You can even install programs within the sandbox to ensure they are clean before you install then to the rest of your PC.

It is, quite literally, the best thing I've downloaded recently. (Following that, probably Taskbar Shuffle). The features I mentioned at the bottom (forceing programs to always run sandboxed, forcing folders to always run sandboxed) as well as creating multiple sandboxes are only unlocked by registering/buying the full product. However, obviously, me being a pirate I refuse to do that. If you would like, send me a PM and I'll generate a username/regkey for you.

The next thing! I <3 Rock Band 2. I'm getting quite good at the drums. I realized that drums are really the only instrument that really teaches you to actually play, in some small way, a real instrument. With that in mind, I thought "Hey, you know what would be cool? A Piano Hero like game! You'd actually learn to play the piano!"

Low and behold: Piano Hero. I purchased the MIDI-To-USB cables today. Looks like fun. Can't wait to give it a shot. Finally get to use that Midi Keyboard I've had sitting in my closet for years!

*always* disable autorun. also, I looked up sandboxie and was sad, because it only supports 32bit Windows (lazy programmers ftl).

Do want! Since I don't have a MIDI keyboard (which I would love to have), I haven't bothered downloading the program, but that would be excellent if you could plug in digital sheet music or just a .midi and have it play it for you, Piano Hero style.

I think he's referring to Unix style file permissions in general, vs the craptasticness that is windows permissioning

I just started watching Lost, with a friend, and Claire (the pregnant girl) bears an uncanny resemblance to Riley Dawson from T:SCC, and it's been bothering me. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just freaking out?

Traditional posix permissions don't prevent you from overwriting your own files. And modern Windows permissions (and others) are far more advanced than them.

Linux servers in particular often are set up where the different processes are unable to access other processes or their files. In particular, running a process not as root makes it impossible to edit or delete crucial system files without permission.

Now while one could argue that setting up accounts on a Window PC works in much the same way, most people don't bother to do that.

Just accept sandboxie as being awesome and made of win and let us all go on with our lives.

he wasn't that specific though :P Most Linux computers are configured for proper multi-user usage by default, whereas most Windows computers (even newer ones that support Access Control Lists) aren't configured for multi-user security. Typically every user can read every other user's files, unless explicitly prohibited from doing so, and the default user is usually the administrator (not the root privileges of running as NT Authority\System, but close enough) and can do whatever they want to any files or processes they want. Since the average user of Windows isn't familiar enough with the OS to say that only they have permission to write to their home directory, and to run as a non-administrative account by default, it will appear that their computer has no permissioning on files. On the other hand, anyone who uses Linux on a regular basis tends to be familiar with chmod, sudo, chown, etc.

I watched Lost first and then T:SCC, so I probably have a different take...but no, I don't notice more than a passing resemblance.

Having proper read + write permissions shouldn't require user intervention :P and yet if you create new accounts on Windows, by default, they can all access each other's files.

Something random:
Analyze this post(from another forum)
but blatant RAWR RULES ONE AND TWO SHALT NOT BE BROKEN RAWR RAWRisms aside, since this interbut and textual drama seem to inflict walls of ego-nurturing analytic posts, I guess I'll contribute.

since I pretty much didn't go all LOL BY NEVER COMING BACK GUYZ IM GONE LOL and dissipated into the distance [my void of awesome was quite quickly filled by a dumptruck load of e-sh*t, I assume, so that's why I don't blame you guys for lacking a WHERE THE F*CK IS OUR INTERNET GOD thread but that's your last warning] I don't think I'll be here much longer, I won't give you my current IRL reasonings for internet usage because I still don't feel the need to prove myself to the internet, but I'll probably flit in and out of here for a dozen or so posts before bed then fade away again, so don't fret my pretty little mansluts. oh yeah, and womansluts too. those are the best kind.

but yeah, mine and faded's hilarious pop-culture referenceful repartees and suppressed nonphysical homoeroticism [mainly on faded's part] topics usually do get some newfag herpies clusters, but its nothing that a little captain morgan's and wirescrubbing won't fix [that was probably a bad metaphor for the fact tat the forums' s***** dilution methods allow newfags to ruin our fun frolicking playtimes, but I still have herpes]. And by wirescrubbing and captain morgan's I mean ignoring the idiot's funny-draining bullshits or just getting the lulz from the first few posts before it gets leapt on, without the burn and recurrent outbreaks of my herpes method.

so basically I use this forum as a catharsis for the abundance of internet lulz that'd probably ruin most of my IRL relationships [the micheal j. fox meme did not go over so well with my pastor. my raw jesus worshipping anus did, though] and let the kids eat up the scraps because I'm not paying attention by then.
