One year in an underground bunker, you get 5 movies

I know there is a favorite movie thread already, but some folks just had a couple, and some had a whole bunch. So I'm laying it down, if you had to go into an underground bunker for a year, which 5 movies would you pick and in what order? A sentence or two on why? I had a top 10 in my livejournal, so I'm going to have to make some hard hypothetical choices here.

1. Groundhog Day
This movie really reflects for me the journey of a joyful existence, and the process by which we become the person we wish the person we love to love.

2. Serenity
It will be interesting to see if this choice stands up over time. But I love the science fiction genre, and I think this is arguably the greatest science fiction movie to date.

3. Strictly Ballroom
This is my "breaking free" movie, representing The Matrix, Chicken Run, and The Truman Show

4. Raising Arizona
It's kind of my token Coen brother's movie. My other favorites of theirs are Hudsucker Proxy and Oh Brother, Where art Thou.

5. Casablanca
I see this movie as love being the greatest thing you can have, but doing the right thing is only the right thing if you give up everything to do it.

1) Cars
This is by far, the best Disney/Pixar movie to date.

2) Stargate The Movie
One of my favorite scifi movies. It may be a little cheesy, but I still love it.

3) Finding Nemo
Haha, another Disney/Pixar one. Just a funny movie overall.

4) Batman Begins
One of my favorite movies of all time. This one is so much better than the originals.

5) War of the Worlds
I don't care too much for Tom Cruise, but Dakota Fanning is a great child actor. She is a bit obnoxious in this one though.

1) Pride and Prejudice (the BBC Mini-Series)
- is that cheating? Colin Firth diving into the pond - 'nuff said

2) Little Women (1994 Winona Ryder verson)
-one of the best film versions of the book

3) Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet verson)
- one of my favourites. Kate is amazing in this!

4) Mirrormask
-Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman pair up to make the best fantasy movie I've ever seen. Layers upon layers to dissect over and over.

5) Serenity
-because I need an action flick, and I need some Joss (and I'm sure it would be cheating to put "the entire Buffy DVD collection")

Oh, how could I have forgotten Sense and Sensibility? And yet which of my five would I replace with it? I haven't seen Mirrormask, maybe I will look it up.

Empire of the Sun - visual poetry. Agony and Ecstasy of growing up.

A Matter of Life and Death - visual perfection. Greatest love story ever.

The Apartment - Best dialogue ever. Second greatest love story

The Princess Bride - So damned Funny, never gets old

Casablanca - dialogue, visuals, love story, performances, this movie just never ever gets old and more than any other movie, Casablanca has IT all.

1)A Beautiful Mind--Extremely fascinating, even if its not exactly true to history. And Russel Crowe does the character of Prof. John Nash a lot of justice when compared to the one in the actual biography.

2,3,4)Star Trek II-The Wrath of Kahn, III-The Search for Spock, IV-The Voyage Home--I could watch these movies over and over, even if they arent backed up by the others in the series, these are the best ones of all.

5)Wayne's World--Gotta credit Mike Myers on this one. It was amazing. He and Dana Carvey work well together and the character of Garth was hilarious, especially all his facial expressions. And the always humourous 'Are you mental?' catch phrase just makes the movie. The sequel sucked tho.

Pssst! Jayelle, can I share a bunker with you? That way, I can have access to Mirrormask and Jane Austin and Serenity and not actually have to take them myself. That would work very, very well.

Anyways, on with the show!

1. Breakfast at Tiffany's -- My ultimate comfort movie. No matter how many times I watch it, I always seem to find something new to comment on. It would have to be there. (Somehow, I'm thinking this isn't coming as a surprise to anyone.)

2. If Lucy Fell -- I just recently fell in love with this movie. SO has to be there.

3. About a Boy -- recently re-watched this. Struck by the realness of it. Love it.

4. Bridget Jones' Diary -- because it's funny and it's got Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

5. Return of the King -- my favorite of the LOTR trilogy. Eomer is hot. Very hot. Way hot.

i don't know if i've got all five yet. we'll see..

1. Rear Window. this is, not only my favorite Hitchcock movie, but probably one of my favorite movies of all time. ever. SO creepy and yet SO removed... it's amazing. it was between this, and The Bad Seed, which is my other favorite old time creepy movie. but Rear Window's got Grace Kelly, so it's a sure thing.

2. Garden State. this movie was released at such a strange turning point in my life. i have so many associations tied to it, both good and bad. i love this movie on its own as well, for what it does and what it tries to do. this movie is pure catharsis for me, in every form.

3. Disney's Beauty and the Beast. again, one of my favorite movies of all time, and my favorite disney flick by far. girl. books. let me say that again: girl. books. my reasons for adoring this movie should be clear.

and i think i need a little while to decide on the last two.

Absolutely! I would love to have access to your movies.

1.) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Greatest movie ever. Simple as that.

2.) Serenity - Funny, action packed, and above all entertaining.

3,4,5) Lord of the Rings - Greatest adaptation of un-adaptable material ever. And watching all three movies will eat away your otherwise boring day.

Salaam

1) Zoolander -- I have no idea why, but I can watch that movie so many times without getting sick of it.

2) The Lost Boys -- I have fond memories of the 80's.

3, 4, 5 The Original Star Wars Trilogy -- Mainly because I got tired of thinking of movies by the time i got to Lost Boys.

I didn't necessarily go with movies that are my favorites. Instead i went with movies that i like and i think i could tolerate seeing repeatedly, which I honestly don't think I could do to the same extent with some of my favorites.

1. The Boondock Saints
because it's incredibly awesome. quite possibly my favorite movie ever.

2. Donnie Darko
see #1 description.

3. Amelie
i know it's a sappy romance movie, but i like it. makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside (even though i can't understand the words and have to read the subtitles)

4. V for Vendetta
V as a character so intrigues me. this is a perfect description of good ideals without having to deal with pesky morality.

5. Garden State
just a great movie.

I guess I'd need funny movies with tons of quotable quotes. These aren't my favorites, but we're talking about 5yrs without killing myself.

1. Princess Bride

2. UHF

3. Arsenic and Old Lace

4. The Court Jester

5. the Disorderly Orderly

If we can pick another person to go with us then I'm taking Craig! I love all those movies. They are all on my top 25 list...possibly 15 if I ever actually make a list. But for me (and this is hard since I rarely pick favorites)

1. Vanilla Sky-because this is my all time favorite movie.
2. Sin City-This movie just blew me away because I didn't think it would be a good movie.
3,4. Kill Bill vol. 1&2-I'm not a big fan of violence, I just like these movies.
5. A Beautiful Mind-This movie was just...is there even a word for it?

1.) V For Vendetta
(I thought I wasn't goin to like this movie. Timeless, yet relevant to current events.)

2.) The Corporation
(Crazy, crazy movie)

3.) The Dead Poet's Society

4.) Shawshank Redemption
(It seems appropriate)

5.)The Holy Grail
(I need to laugh after all that)

in no particular order -

Waiting for Guffman - The first in the Christopher Guest project, and still the best. "It's a Zen thing, like how many babies fit in a tire. You know, that old joke."

Fletch - A classic. nothing more needs to be said. "Look, defenseless babies!"

Love Liza - Completely different from the first two. I think this might be Philip Seymour Hoffman's greatest role ever. "Do you know who I am?... I am a big fan of Radio Control!"

The Royal Tenenbaums - fantastic movie. I love Gene Hackman, and Bill Murray. "That's the last time you put a knife in me! Y'hear me?"

Office Space - I can watch this movie again and again and never get sick of it. "Excuse me, I believe you have my stapler... "

That would get me through a year, but I wouldn't like being limited to just those....

Isn't This is Spinal Tap considered the first?

High Society- the color version, not the one with Joan Crawford, she gives me the creeps.

Beauty and The Beast- so I can sing along

Evita- Madonna and Antonio Banderas... wonderful songs... interesting (and slightly non-fiction) plot

Gone with the Wind- I can't imagine a world with out Rhett.

Forrest Gump- mostly because it's good for a nice cry if I can't bring my Grey's Anatomy Season Two set along

The Princess Bride and Come September (with Cary Grant) would be on there if I were allowed more room. My two favorite movies to watch in Spanish: "El Nino de Tambor" (just a dubbed version of "The Little Drummer Boy", you know one of the cheesy claymation movies that make Christmas, Christmas) And also my El Principito (The Little Prince) that my best friend found for a dollar at Save-A-Lot. These are both less than 30 minutes long, so they don't count as real movies.

I would chose five random movies. Being able to chose would tempt me into chosing movies that I would get bored with. Better to be surprised the first time I decide to veg out for a couple hours than to watch a movie I already know. Alternatively I could ask my friends to pick 5 I've never seen and take them. If you have a recommendation for me, please don't hesitate...

Technically This is Spinal Tap is along the same vein as the Christopher Guest Project, but it isn't actually a part of that project. Rob Reiner directed Tap, and therefore it doesn't quite fit into the same lump. That isn't to say it isn't as good... Just that it is a little different.

Also I am very much so looking forward to For Your Consideration Nov 17th can't come quick enough!

4. Run, Lola, Run - i love this movie. and i think it's it's a good idea to have a foreign film in the pile. that way, when i get sick of watching five movies over and over again, and whatever else it is i do for amusement in this underground bunker, then i can begin to teach myself a language (in this case, german).

*bump* Sorry...again. I sort of have time to go way back into the threads.

Being completely honest and not trying to impress anyone:

1) Good Will Hunting -What can I say? I'm a huge fan of the Boston accents in this one and I love the interaction between Matt Damon and Robin Williams.

2) Hairspray (2007) - Awesome, upbeat musical. Can't beat that.

3) P.S. I Love You - Two words: Gerard Butler. This movie makes me giggle like a 13 year old and I'm sort of ashamed of that.

4) Meet the Robinsons -I don't know why I like this one as much as I do. Just a good story.

5) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - A favorite ever since I first saw it. I love the bittersweet ending on it.

I had to leave Star Wars off because I couldn't bring myself to pick just one of the original trilogy and I didn't want the majority of it to be one series.

It's okay, this is a good one. I can't believe I never responded to this... it must have just been because I couldn't come up with five.

...and I still can't. I have

1. The Shawshank Redemption

2. Snatch (Or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels? Agh, decisions decisions...)

Maybe I could add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I'm not sure. I'd also consider a Schwarzenegger* film (Predator or Commando come to mind), because they are awesome for nothing else than his one-liners ("Get to tha choppah!" :D).

That's all I can think of for now.

* I was so close to spelling this correctly on the first try, I swear.

It is a good thread, indeed. Good thing I have about five movies that I already have watched over and over and over again.

1) The Incredibles - I haven't seen Cars, so I can't say who is better than who, but we all know who is. I actually have "The Incredibles Clause" set in place where if anyone, at any time, suggests that we watch this movie, I will set anything down and do it. I love it.

2) It's a Wonderful Life - Almost cry, every time. If I didn't feel guilty for watching it when it isn't Christmas, I would watch it much more.

3) Fight Club - Watched it three times in a day once, and that settled me for a while, but then I still watch it quite often. Every single time I get about halfway through, think to myself "Why am I watching this yet again?" and then remember when it gets to the final scene and the Pixies start blaring through my speakers.

4) Orange County - I wish that Colin Hanks was in more, because he's perfect in this movie as the, well, as the whatever he is. Jack Black is hilarious, of course, but the interplay between the whole family, and the metacommentary, and the soundtrack, and the dialogue, well, it all just goes so well with it all.

5) I dunno, that's my list. Probably Six-String Samurai - It's about a post-apocalyptic Nevada where a Buddy Holly look-alike is traveling to Lost Vegas to claim the throne as the Kind of Rock 'n' Roll, slashing up would-be Kings along the way. And that, well, that's the movie in a nutshell.

Stand by Me is an eternal favorite, too. Maybe that. Nah, I love my samurai.

I knew I forgot one: my one anime movie. Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku Hen (not the spliced directory's cut edition thing). Technically an OVA, but hey, it's about the length of a movie. And it's just too awesome.

It was hard to think of for a bit, too, because I actually tend to not like anime in the form of movies. It's basically either that, or End of Eva, and even though Eva might be a better series, Tsuiouku Hen by itself just beats any other animated movie I think I've ever seen.

castaway: I think I could relate to the guy if I'm alone in the bunker plus I've seen the movie several times and I always forget it so I could definatly watch it alot.

Elf: i watch this about 10 times every winter and i could qoute the whole movie.

A seson of the office (can I bring tv shows?)

Forest Gump: because it can make me luagh and cry.

Lord of The Rings Return of The king: because I need some thing epic.

Depending on when I am in the bunker and if it ever comes to be the Enders Game movie :D

1- The Lion King- my favorite movie of all time. Grew up on this since I was 4. Or, as Comic Book Guy would say: BEST. MOVIE. EVER.

2- Borat. If I'm in a prison, gotta know how annoying life in the outside are. Plus, it's probably the funniest movie I've ever seen.

3,4,5, possibility 1- comedy:

3- EuroTrip. It's a fun, not-too-much-thinking movie- the kind of which I'd like to have when I'm in prison.

4- American Pie 1, 3 or 6. I dunno what's wrong with me, but I love those films.

5- The Shawshank Redemption. I'll need a hopeful movie while I'm there.

3,4,5, possibility 2- trilogy:

3, 4, 5- The Godfather trilogy. Because I haven't seen them yet and they might be the best trilogy ever created.

3,4,5 possibility 3- drama and epics:

3- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Best part of the trilogy, IMO.

4- The Princess Bride: Funny, smart and with adventures. What more could someone need?

5- Coach Carter. I love basketball- I love playing basketball, I love watching basketball games and I love watching basketball movies, even the crappy ones (such as Space Jam and Like Mike). Unfortunately, no basketball film is good enough to be on my list except this one.

I'm taking RotK off of the list in favor of Sweeney Todd.
