Five are dead, including the gunman, and I've heard mention of as many as 18 injured. It feels like every time I turn around something like this is happening...

Or the media puts a spin on it to make it feel that way, which helps to pad their bottom line(s).

Mass shootings are not rare in the United States, where gun control is less strict than in many countries and where the gun-ownership lobby is politically influential.
True? Discuss. I mean, the rare part, specifically.

It feels like there have been quite a few shootings in Canada, where our gun laws are stricter. Our population is quite a bit smaller, so of course there are fewer in number then the States, but I don't know if it's "rare".

also,

It's not like the media is making up these stories.

No, but it's a matter of tone and emphasis. Those play a BIG role.

I don't feel like it happens that often.

And, honestly, I'm sick to death of the gun control arguments that are going to happen again. Bleh.

Ditto. It's sad, but honestly, if it's happening once a year, I don't feel like that means it's happening every time I turn around.

Exactly, but you turn on the TV, and that's what it FEELS like. Hell, they act like Columbine is still a fresh, raw wound every time this stuff happens. That was nine years ago! Half my goddamn life and they act like it just happened, like this sort of thing is going on all the time. We're being manipulated, and I don't like it one bit.

Manipulated to what end, exactly?

"News" exists solely to sell advertising space on the carrying media. We, as consumers, are manipulated to support this goal.

Yeah, and nothing sells like fear.

I don't see this in the linked article. Where is this from? Or did you come up with that yourself?

You removed it from the article! I knew it! You and your leet Canadian-trained haxing skills!

Or someone else did. But it was there. Right? I'm not crazy, am I? :|

I remebered reading that bit before you quoted, so it must have been removed if it's gone.

For me, this is so much closer to home. For one, I was seriously considering NIU's law school for about two years. Then, another school offered me a better deal and I took it.

What's worse is that I know four people that there when it went down. Thank God none of them were killed.
