Sleep Positions

Postby Satya » Sat May 01, 2010 6:58 am

Sleep position gives personality clue
If you want an insight into somebody's true personality, then try to catch a glimpse of the way they sleep.

Scientists believe the position in which a person goes to sleep provides an important clue about the kind of person they are.
Image

# The Foetus
(41%):Those who curl up in the foetus position are described as tough on the outside but sensitive at heart. They may be shy when they first meet somebody, but soon relax.

This is the most common sleeping position, adopted by 41% of the 1,000 people who took part in the survey. More than twice as many women as men tend to adopt this position.

# Log (15%): Lying on your side with both arms down by your side. These sleepers are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd, and who are trusting of strangers. However, they may be gullible.

# Yearner (13%): People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. They are slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it.

# Soldier (8%): Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don't like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards.

# Freefaller
(7%): Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don't like criticism, or extreme situations.

# Starfish (5%): Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don't like to be the centre of attention.

Except for the Freefaller, I probably sleep in all of these at some point in the night.

Fetus, yearner, and freefaller. I cannot sleep on my back. Ever.
There's another home somewhere,
There's another glimpse of sky...
There's another way to lean
into the wind, unafraid.
There's another life out there...

Mostly Fetus and Yearner (I roll around a lot in bed during sleep), though I sometimes find myself waking up on Freefaller.

Most of the time, I sleep freefaller. I usually start in the foetus position but don't fall asleep until I'm on my belly.

# Freefaller (7%): Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don't like criticism, or extreme situations.
I basically sleep in this position but my face typically faces whichever side the edge of the bed is and that influences my arm and leg positioning. If I'm facing to the right, my left arm goes under the pillow, not around it, and my right leg comes up somewhat like in the foetus; I can't keep both legs straight down. Overshare, I know.

Anywho, I'm not sure how gregarious I am but the rest seems accurate.

FETUS, yearner, freefaller, probably even log. I go to sleep in almost the same position every night (a relaxed foetus) and wake up in a brand new, interesting position every morning!

None of the above. I do sometimes sleep in the fetus position, but more often I sleep in what first aiders call "semi-prone".

I go between Soldier and Starfish at the beginning of the night (for some reason I feel like I breathe better) and end up in either Log or Yearner. Never Freefaller. I can't sleep on my stomach. For some reason not fetus either; I used to all the time but not anymore. Maybe it was a personality change?

A mixture of a yearner and free-faller. Which has basically no reflection on my personality based on those suggestions. That's as bad as graphology.

The issue is more that it HAS been studied and it's wrong, and yet people still use it. Graphology is even used to help make hiring decisions in more than a few work-places.

Just as Rei said.
There is a reason why graphology is considered stupid, and it's easily dismissed. It's because it was studied, and it didn't work.
There was a time when phrenology was sound science. Well, studying the phrenology was, anyway. It soon became evident that it was stupid, though.

A big warning sign is that there isn't a mention of any journal publication respect to this matter. Nor i can find any in Dr. Idzikowski's publication history. I wonder how much is there of actual things the guy said, and how much is put by the pseudoscience-happy journalist.

The "science" in this case is "studying" a person's "personality." While there exist qualifiable sciences in the fields regarding this general topic, even within them it's considered subjective and highly variable based on individuals and their myriad differences. So I highly doubt that the manner in which a person falls asleep can give you an accurate glimpse into the window of their subconscious, just as the manner in which they write most likely doesn't either. There are numerous methods to give you a much more worthwhile picture of what a person is like - the former two cannot. The manner in which a person falls asleep is, in my opinion, wholly dependent on what feels comfortable for them, what habit has been ingrained in them, the way their partner sleeps if they have one, biological predisposition, the kind of bed they're using and so on. For me, my sleep position can't have anything to do with my personality. It's entirely based on comfort and breathing. I feel like I can breathe a lot easier with my face up, so I usually sleep in a modified yearner - on my side, hands out, but facing more up. Or I'll sleep in log with the same modification, or in soldier. I can't do fetus because it's too hard to keep my face up. I don't know if this is the reason, but I feel like lifting a lot of weights makes my arms too sore to use starfish. And freefaller is out of the question. I simply can't sleep face-down. It has nothing to do with me not being "gregarious and brash" enough. I just thought this would be an interesting topic.

I generally fall asleep in fetus or free falling, though I wake up quite often in soldier, but with my arms across my chest Pharaoh stile--it's weird.

I pretty much can only fall asleep if I am on my left side, my left shoulder as close as possible to the mattress & smashing the left side of my face into my pillow. It has gotten to the point where if I am really tired, I can fall asleep on my right side.
So don't go worrying about me

It depends so much on (1) who is in the bed with me, (2) how tired I am and (3) why I'm tired.

For example, if it's just me and I'm not terribly exhausted, I'm more likely to start in fetal around a pillow and end up in soldier or yearner.

If my boyfriend is there, I'm more likely to go with a yearner, with him and me facing the same direction.

If my cat's there, I'm likely to be in a yearner that accomodates where she wants to sleep.

etc etc etc

Nah, the personality relationship doesn't fly.

I can't sleep face-down without waking with a stiff neck and possible numb body parts.

I can sleep on my back, but i invariably have very lengthy, extremely vivid and detailed dreams with extensive plots (sometimes with several half-wakings followed by returns to the same plot-line) after which i awake drenched in sweat and so groggy and out-of-it that i literally cannot move for several minutes, and reallity seems like the pale dream in comparison. Sometimes i'll even get up in such circumstances, walk around and do things without thinking as if my conscious and subconscious have traded places.

none of these fit me. and I can't really describe how I sleep it's a mix of fetus, freefall, and yearner. almost never starfish. sometimes soldier. I don't like soldier unless it's pitch black with zero light otherwise my eyes will be aware of the light, face to the side or face down it's easier to ignore the light.
