XKCD

Postby P3+J3^u! » Sat Jul 11, 2009 12:45 pm

Just started really following it. I've been haranguing (spelling? no, I can't) facebook users for several days about the ones I like. Anyone else read/reading it?

For pertinence: http://xkcd.com/241/ I was pleased to discover Randall Munroe is a fan.

I'm pretty sure that most of us are fans, from what I remember.

Randall Munroe usually makes my Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Who controls the British crown? Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps? Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?
We do! We do!
Who robs cavefish of their sight? Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do, we do!

He normally makes my Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights.

I'm fairly certain it's been mentioned a few times in the webcomics thread.

Not that Randall isn't an awesome guy, but if you're going through the archives, take it slow. He's had, at least in my opinion, trouble adjusting to being wildly popular. He was better when he wasn't worried about everyone getting his jokes.

I'm not Munroe's biggest fan, and I do tend to like his earlier comics more... (Zeppelin is possibly my favorite), but you can't say comics like this are being dumbed down to be easier to get.

Sure, Erdos numbers are fairly esoteric, but a google or wiki search yields the answer quickly enough.

Graphs of CMB radiation density with no actual clue as to what it is for the uniformed however, is a level of geek nirvana I don't expect XKCD will ever return to.

Eh. Maybe not, but XKCD wasn't always funny, but it was almost always awesome. These days the funny comes along at about the same rate, but the awesome's been absent.

Can't Randall pick on chemists, or biologists, or someone else every once in a while?

Like, say... computational linguists?

The Three-Body problem isn't really something that biologists spend a lot of time thinking about, I suspect. Unless you're referring to.. well, never mind.
