EiE - Arkanian Delphiki *SPOILERS*

Postby Mega » Thu Jan 01, 2009 2:06 pm

I may be the only one that thinks this, but that was a stupid plot. Card barely developed, took a few chapters to complete it, it just wasn't well done. If Card had made that more in depth, by either lengthening the book, or taking out nonessentials in the other parts of the book, it would have been better, but he didn't. It was a significant thing, and it probably should have been elaborated on more, like more then the chapters given.

Otherwise a really good book

that may be true, but you shouldnt call it a stupid plot. especially after you yourself called it an important sequence in the story of Ender Wiggin.

I agree that more time should have been spent on the chapters concerning Arkanian Delphiki and Ender's time spent on Ganges. However, you have to take into concideration that Ender spent a significant amount of time in Shakespeare Colony as opposed to how little he spent on Ganges.

What nonessentials would be taken out?
"I know you."
"I know you think you do. And if I die, you'll think I chose to. The truth is much more complicated. I don't intend to die. But I'm not afraid of the risk of death. Sometimes a soldier has to put himself in harms way in order to achieve victory."
"It's not your war," said Valentine.
Ender laughed. "It's always my war."

If you read the afterword, Card explains that initially the conflict on Ganges was going to be the central story of the book, but somewhere along the way he decided to focus on Shakespeare colony instead.

I've read the afterword twice but I don't remember anything like that. Guess I'll just have to check again.

I don't really feel the Arkanian Delphiki sub-plot was really resolved in my opinion. What happened to Arkanian afterwards? Hopefully OSC ties up those plot ends some other time.

I doubt that he did anything of note afterward. Keep in mind that since he suffered from Bean's condition he wouldn't even have much longer to live.

I thought Arkanian Delphiki was far too stupid to be the child of Bean and Petra. Let alone have Anton's Key turned.

stupid

Postby theinvid » Wed Jan 14, 2009 2:10 pm

I don't believe that the character of Arkanian Delphiki was developed enough for my liking....a more in depth exploration of his plot line would have been nice (as originally planned).

....to say that he's stupid is likely going a bit too far.
I would think that having lived on a planet that likely did not have advanced schooling to help further his intellignence and growing up with a mother that was feeding him lies and whom was not intelligent enough to educate the boy herself, Arkanian Delphiki was intelligent enough to start a strong movement on Earth (despite limited ansible access) that changed the way Ender Wiggin was perceived. He was also a major thorn in Verlomi's side. Verlomi is no intellectual slouch either.

A. Delphiki was hyper intelligent....but he was also manipulated from birth. This plot-line just wasn't developed enough for my liking.

Just tossing this out here but I don't understand how people who've read these books spell commonly used names wrong over and over. If you are in doubt, please use the books as a reference. I don't mean to belittle anyone, I'm just a firm believer in accuracy.

Actually it seems like he has a temper. Cool off, it isn't that big of a deal. In real life, an attitude like that will get you beat up.

I disagree. I thought the scene where Ender allowed Achilles Junior to beat him within an inch of his life was one of the most powerful scenes in the series.

Agreed.

After having Bean start his journey through space I was always disappointed because I wanted to read more about him and I thought I was going to get a bit of Bean from Achilles Jr but I was disappointed when Achilles Jr. was hardly written about. But having said all this, I suspect that this idea will be further developed in the new book of the series being written right now. I heard it is about bean and his children, so perhaps?
