Hey Lyons, the Simpsons quote in your sig, I'm almost certain that it goes "what kind of God would allow that".
Just thought I'd say something.

Fine. Fine. Fine. Fine. Darn all you perfectionists. It is people like us (for I am also a perfectionist) that makes this world a much more irritating place to live in.

A question popped up in my mind:
To all of you who've read the Harry Potter books (everyone here?), I'm sure you remember the part from HP5 (Order of the Phoenix) when Harry tried to use the Cruciatus curse on Bellatrix Lestange, and though it hurt her, she got up and told him "you have to mean it".. And afterwards, in book 7, Harry finally Cruciates someone (forgot who it was) and says "Bellatrix was right, you do have to mean it"..
Well, if when you don't mean the Cruciatus curse it only hurts just a bit, what happens when you use Avada Kedabra but you don't mean it? Does the victim go catatonic or something? XD

Who controls the British crown? Who keeps the metric system down?
We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps? Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?
We do! We do!
Who robs cavefish of their sight? Who rigs every Oscar night?

no I think you can't even fire an AK without really meaning it. The intention powers the magic, the wand focuses the spell into the curse. Voldemort probably could kill someone with wandless magic (doesn't necessariliy mean unfocused, but not focused by a wand) but he's the ultimate drama queen and loves the showiness of a killing curse. He's not the type to kill silently and leave everyone guessing who did it (though that is a lot more evil).
one thing that always bothered me was the vagaries of how the imperious curse works, I really want a detailed entry in the scottish book that addresses what seem to me to be inconsistencies.
That and why the hell Dumbledore never talked to Sirius or was never allowed to talk to Sirius at or after the trial. OTOH, Grindlewald sort of clears this up, Dumbledore perhaps thinking he had misjudged Sirius as badly and as deeply as he did Grindlewald, and he cowardly avoided contacting Sirius because of that--not because he held a grudge but because he believed with Sirius that he had failed just as deeply as he had before. And to a degree, Snape was also a failure for him, for all that he was also a success in turning back.

I took pictures of the thirty feet of food + 10 feet of dessert that is thanksgiving in my (maternal) family. there were 52 people, a very decent turnout. I'd post the pics here, but I've posted too many pics on here today anyway. Those who want the proof, it's on facebook, though I took the pics when only about 90% of the food was on the table (you can see empty tablecloth in places that shows where a dish would be placed in a few minutes after I took the pics).
Also, on HP, I think Wand magic is much more anonymous, in that wizard forensics wouldn't be able to determine who cast a spell that killed someone just the spell that was cast. If they had the wand, though, we know they can use priori incantatum to see if that wand cast the spell in question.
I'm basing this on dumbledore picking up Voldie's signature on the magic in the cave, and such like. I think wandless magic leaves much more of a fingerprint and is directly traceable. So perhaps the best reason someone doesn't try to AK someone without a wand is that they'd be easily discovered.

I have a love hate relationship with turtlenecks. On one hand, they keep your neck warm, and are cozy. They are also flattering on most people. In practical terms, they are also discreet apparel if you want to hide a hickey or curling iron burn. On the other hand, they are just a few inches away from compressing your airway. And what if your neck gets hot? Too bad for you, no way to unwrap this scarf.

I would have posted this in the Dissertation Story thread, but this one was further up the thread. Anyway, I found it amusing.

I just sold my YouTube account for 210$. Let's compare our sweet deals =)I just traded four snow tires that I got for free off of Craigslist for a 35mm camera in a leather carrying satchel. Talk about a sweet deal!

The Deluxe Edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is definitely worth it, by far the most excellent and impressive edition of a book I've ever had.
I've only read the first story, the Wizard and the Hopping Pot (and Dumbledore's excellent commentary) but it's safe to say that this is something I'm going to enjoy immensely. I took dozens of pictures of the edition, and will probably put them up on facebook later.
the next story is The Fountain of Fair Fortune, which is supposedly the best of Beedle's tales.

You sell it by receiving money on PayPal, then sending your password to an agreed location (E-Mail, user account or whatnot). Why? Because I had no reason to keep it for myself, if someone offered to pay me for it. It was fun, but I prefer cold, hard cash =)How/Why do you sell a Youtube account?
Why would anyone buy a YouTube account? Beats me. Probably some marketing technique I couldn't understand at first sight (nor at second), but hey, if his money's good then I don't care.

It turns out the camera that I traded for on Craigslist ceased production in 1943, which means it is, at the least, 65 years old, if not 70. I'll possibly need to do some minor repairs to get it working, but that is totally awesome. I have a strange fixation on old, mechanical things.
Example! I've always wanted a typewriter, to the point that I ordered one off of eBay for $.25 and paid the $25 shipping. It was really unfortunate that, when I got it, it was broken beyond repair due to stupid, stupid shipping. After that, my grandpa found out that they had a "portable" typewriter just sitting around and gave it to me. I love it. A lot. I considered doing my Nanowrimo on it, but decided it would be too annoying to manually count the words every day.
I love it to the point of taking it to a class to take notes with it. The stupid professor asked me to stop typing or leave, and so I left. Quite dramatically. Sadly, none of my friends want to start a typewriter revolution of taking the typewriter to class and getting kicked out.
And that is my typewriter story!

I am fully awesome at domestic engineering. I am a less frilly (also less crimnal) version of Martha Stewart. I also don't do useless/creepy things like spray painting a turkey carcass and using it as a Christmas card holder. I sometimes consider it a crying shame that it isn't pre-WWII and I still could be expected to be a housewife. I am an amazing cook. I have a seriously green thumb (except for violets, sadly, can never seem to get them to bloom), I can clean anything. I can knit, sew, crochet, and quilt.
But I am going to nursing school.

you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells

I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

I'm doomed. I lost yet ANOTHER flash drive at school. I can't find it in any of my classrooms and none of my teachers have seen it. My dad is getting really tired of me losing things. Its not my fault though! They're too small to keep up with!
