I am bringing the sports thread back.
Flyers: Up 2-1 on the Capitals looking to make it 3-1 tonight.
Sixers: In the playoffs and matched up against Detroit. I don't think they will win this series. I expect them to win a game, winning two games would be nice, anything beyond that would be incredible. More importantly, NBA basketball is relevent in Philly again. The sixers are fun to watch, they are young, they have a good coach, they a good GM. The future looks very bright for this group.
Phillies: Watching the Phillies in April is terrible. They always stumble out of the gate no matter what. If they escape this month at .500 I will be happy, especially now that Rollins and Victorino are hurt. Rollins hopefully will be back this weekend.

Man, the western playoffs this year- besides the Lakers VS Nuggets series, which is sorta bound to end in a victory for the Lakers since the Nuggets can't do defense- are insane.
My bets:
Phoenix VS San-Antonio: Phoenix takes, though not by a long shot. Even if Shaq's old, he's proven his worth, and he can limit Duncan by a lot, which is always a huge bonus. Plus, the Spurs don't have a good enough answer for Andre Stoudamire, and if they focus on stopping Stoudamire, than they don't have a good enough answer for Shaq.
New Orleans VS Dallas: New Orleans takes. The Hornetts have a good, stable roster, and Dirk Novitzki still hasn't found himself since his recent injury.
Utah VS Houston: Contrary to popular belief, I still believe Houston will be taking this one. Maybe I'd just like to believe that, but still, if T-Mac fixes his shooting, and Scola and Mutombo do some aggressive defending, they could take down the Jazz.
EAST:
Boston VS Atlanta: Do I really need to talk about this?
Washington VS Cleveland: Looks to be a pretty tied match- the Wizards are going through some good times, and yet on the other side, there's King James. Despite that, a one-man-team isn't good enough for the playoffs, so after a tough one, Washington are going to advance. (Unless Ben Wallace finally starts playing)
Detroit VS Philly: As much as I'd like the sixers to win- they play pretty basketball, not effective basketball like San-Antonio- the Pistons are going to take this one, easily.
Orlando VS Toronto: Orlando takes. This time, it's just a gut feeling (and, of course, Dwight Howard). Sorry for all you canadians out there.

Woo, Celtics!
I should add that I'm not really a Celtics fan; I just hate the Lakers enough that I'd rather cheer on an east coast team.
Meanwhile, my Diamondbacks managed to beat the Mets (thank God, their record on the road is ugly) and are coming/already home, so yay!

I second the "Woo Celtics". Not really a fan, but I hate the Lakers and Kobe. Plus I would like to see Garnett get a title.
I'll give a Woo to your DBacks too Alea. As a Phillies fan, I always appreciate someone beating the Mets.
The Phils have a tough stretch coming up. St. Louis, Boston, the Angels. A .500 record over this period would please me greatly.

Aww, well my hubby is from CA and a Laker's fan...and he had a REALLY bad day yesterday so I was hoping they would win so as not to make his day even worse. But, alas. I personally don't care at all.
On another note, he has convinced me to become a Dodger's fan now that Mattingly is part of the team.

Idiotic Female Reporter: After all you've been through, how did you find the energy you've displayed out there tonight?
Paul Pierce, incredulous: ...it's the NBA finals!
And from his facial expression you KNOW that pause indicated that what he really meant was "Crazy bitch--it's the NBA finals!"
God, I love the Celtics.

you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

also love the olympics. I'm going to need to get my roommate to upgrade our DirectTV plan so I can have a tivo and HD next week. I'm not as big a fan of the summer olympics as the winter olympics, but since 1996 I've been a big fan of gymnastics. Shannon Miller, Keri Strug, Dominique Moceanu. Those were the days.

The opening ceremonies were awesome! During the box thing I told my friend how cool it would be if people were under there and not just computers : )
The winter Olympics are just north of me in 2010, how cool would it be to actually watch an opening ceremony?

I wish they showed the fencing on TV. My laptop's sound quality sucks, so I can't the touches called, and I can't tell by just watching because:
1. They're faster than the people in my class.
2. I'm not used to watching sabre anyway. I fence foil.

Watching sabre is great. After an average of about two seconds, someone lunges or makes an attack of some kind, they shout, and the point is over. And it's impossible to tell by looking who got the point. By comparison the others are just plain boring. (<-- sarcasm; epee and foil are actually somewhat sensible)
Oh, and yay Olympics. I've seen a few events, but haven't anything in particular to say, except that the paintdancers in the opening ceremonies seemed a lot less impressive to me when the announcers said it was on an electronic screen. Actually painting that way would be awesome.

Biased judging panels! One of the Chinese gymnists were on the parallel bars lost his balance, sat on the bar, and caught himself on the opposite bar while falling forward and he still got an 8.3 for execution! If he were an American he wouldn't have scored as high.
usa vs japan beach volley ball was very cool.
I missed the opening ceremonies. I needed to get away and be distracted so I went to the theaters and saw Hitch and movie-hopped to swing vote.

...but paranoia is all I have!!
just watched phelps break the world record and take gold in 200 freestyle
all these olympics have made me nostalgic for 1996, when I was 12/13 and had a huge crush on Dominique Moceanu.

Men's gymnastics team took bronze after boning the Pomell Horse routine, Chinese were far and away in the lead with first, Japan took second. Pretty good, but we had silver in our grasp. It was kind of a dull presentation of the gymnastics though. It's all tape delayed, get with the program and pack the routines on top of each other, if they had the score for that routine come up as soon as they complete their dismount and didn't bother with any of the nattering chatter and only one replay they could show twice as much material. I don't think they showed the USA on rings at all (which is my favorite of the men's to watch, man I would love to be able to do a single muscle up on rings). Really wish I still had my dvr to watch this on instead. Hate having satellite, want cable back. stupid direct tv, stupid roommates for already having satellite before I moved in.
in other sporting news those damned assholes at sports illustrated put USC on the cover of their college football preview issue (aug 11) AGAIN! two years in a row now. Those nittering asshat bastards. grrr... and the part that really pisses me off is that they hammer us with the curse but don't even bother to put us in 1st in their predictions, nor do they have us in the national championship game in their predictions. that's just piling insult to injury. If you're going to curse teams, SI, at least have the grace to put them at the top of the pack, rather than third.

God, I had to laugh at the men's gymnastics team when they were talking to the camera: This is how we roll! *snort* It just sounded so goofy and not at all manly/cool/intimidating/confident/whatever it was they were going for. I was sad to see the one guy goof up on the floor routine and then see the first two somewhat fall apart on the pommel horse, but overall it was pretty cool.
Beach volleyball against Cuba was fun but I was more entertained by it the closer the match was (the few times the Cuban team was able to tie or stay within a point or two made it pretty exciting).
Swimming was awesome. Go Coughlin and Peirsol for defending their titles. And Phelps, geeze, that man is a machine.
