Crafty Craftiness

Postby Rei » Fri Mar 14, 2008 8:59 pm

Seeing as I'm sure we have at least a few people around here who make things every now and then, a new thread seems to be the thing.

For my part, I made myself a pair of cuff links this evening. They need to be sealed with clear nail polish yet, but otherwise they are basically done:

The fronts.

The backs.

The goal was to make them look like typewriter keys, which I don't think I did so well at. However, I do like the look of them. I went with XP as a friend of mine suggested chi-rho. And then I thought of it as gaining XP. Which was generally cool, in my mind. The images are backwards because I haven't played with the settings on my webcam yet.

I am curious how one goes about making cufflinks.

I'm not sure if I've posted these before but I make earpins. They are a type of earring that slide into the hole in your year and then along the back of the ear (kind of like a bobby pin). It kind of looks like multiple piercings from a distance. I originally saw them on ebay years ago and bought a pair but could never find the same kind again so decided to buy the supplies and figure out how to make them myself. I now make them for friends and family and the occasional sale.

They are made from sterling silver wire & beads and genuine stone beads. If anyone ever wants a pair or two, let me know.

Those are really neat, Luet! That's really awesome that you use such materials, too.

Helen: I used 12-gauge copper wire and buttons, essentially. And pliers. There was much use of the pliers. One piece of wire loops around and connects to the button to form the post; and the second piece gets hooked onto the first in a loop pattern to form a cross-beam that can spin. Essentially it looks a bit like an I, with the spinning cross beam on one side and the button on the other. If I decide to make another pair I'll take pictures to show the process.

Oh, wow, Nomi. Those are absolutely beautiful! I would totally wear those! I have no idea which ones I would choose, though. They are all so gorgeous.

Aww, the sock monkeys are great. My mom made us some when we were little. She also made my brother and I Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls. I still have mine.

On the earpins: I can still make them and I got two new stone types, goldstone and olivine jade (a sort of yellow-green color). I'll get up some more pics when I have sample pairs of the new stones done.

Nomi, I meant to say something the first time you posted but I'm awful sometimes with remembering to do things. I think the earpins are really quite lovely.

Humor me, please, but how much would it cost to get a pair or two? (I'm ignoring the word free; your time and effort is worth more than that.)

I pm'd you Lea. :)

And for everyone else who might be interested...I just made up an album with close up photos of all the available stone choices. It makes it easier to see what they really look like. I have a limited number of beads of: green aventurine, sodalite, snowflake obsidian and turquoise. I didn't include them in the gallery but if anyone wants one of those, let me know. And seriously, I don't mind making these for free! And then you can get help me SELL some to your friends and family (still for cheap).

Luet, I got the pair you sent me and I absolutely LOVE them! I've had so many people stop and ask me if they're one earing and where they can get them.

Thank you.

That etsy site is really cool. I sent it to my sister because she's getting very crafty, she just made a baby quilt for our next niece her first attempt at quilting. that reminds me... I need a new quilt. :)

what is an ear slide? does it require pierced ears?

well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost

I recently made my own BabyLegs. For those who don't know, you can buy legwarmers for kids that are great, because they make diaper changes easier (instead of having to pull off pants or tights) and keep babies legs warm.
However, they are $12+ a pair and only come in one size.
So, I bought dollarstore socks and made a bunch of my own:

any ideas of what would be a great $30 ish christmas present for a crafty craftperson? my sister's gotten very crafty with sewing and making a baby quilt and her own sidewalk paint and so on, and I'd like to get her something crafty-oriented.

I agree. For some reason I just fell like giving a gift card means I didn't pu any thought or effort into the gift. Getting them is great though, because then I don't have to worry about not liking the gift.
