1980s + 1990s > 2000s

Postby Gravity Defier » Thu May 22, 2008 1:18 am

This is just a place to share what you loved from the 80s or 90s or to rant about the general suckiness of what we get today compared to the quality shows, movies and music of those two decades.

(I'm serious.)

I have so many things I could list, but I'll start off slow here.

Karate Kid. Parts one and two were nothing short of spectacular to little Alea.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun. I love it for so many reasons, but one of the big ones being that it introduced me to Chicago 22 years ago.

Teen Witch. Perhaps the corniest movie to ever be made, but I can't help loving it. I'm terribly upset that they're doing a remake. With Ashley Tisdale! Ugh.

Teen Wolf, the brother movie to Teen Witch. Michael J. Fox as a teen who turns into a wolf when angered, nervous, or excited...title makes sense, eh?

Back to the Future and Peggy Sue Got Married. My first movie experiences with time travel.

Howard the Duck. Ha. Possibly the worst movie ever made. But I liked it growing up, so I like it now.

Terminator and T-2. Terrified the s*** out of me.

License to Drive and The Lost Boys. The Corey's are in them!

I haven't even touched music or tv...but I'll stop. I said I'd be gentle and go slow.

Boy Meets World, to start off TV. The early years, of course. High school was pretty good, too.

Third Eye Blind, although their new stuff is good.

Video games. They got their start there, and most of my favorites are from the 90's, early and late.

The interwebs became widespread!

The Goonies, Stand by Me, Gremlins. Hey, all of those have Corey Feldman!

The Lost Boys.
YES!

So few of my friends actually know of this movie, I get very excited when someone does. If you mention you like this movie, it is pretty much gauranteed that you will be good side. I have had several bonding experiences with people I just met at parties because this movie some how got brought up. Come on, what is better than vampires and the coreys? Nothing.

I love, love, LOVE Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Young Helen Hunt, Young Sarah Jessica Parker, Tiny Shannen Dougherty, nothing better.

I actually just introduced it to a whole new generation of girls, all of whom were born in 92-96 range. They loved it too.

You should all hang your heads in shame for not mentioning the original Transformers. Seriously. Hang your heads, all of you!

In general, North American cartoons (as opposed to anime) were soooooo much better in the 80s and early 90s than what they make now. Kids today have no idea how deprived they are. Have you seen the latest Transformers cartoon? It's such crap! And "The Batman" next to "Batman: The Animated Series" of the early 90s... No comparison!

There are some videos on youtube that are collections of cartoon intros from that era. If you grew up in that time seeing them will instantly make you happy :D

I'd post links, but I can't access youtube from here.

This doesn't register in my head. I don't think I have any close friends who don't know about this movie. One of them gave it to me as a birthday present years ago.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about; old-school stuff. Although my actual memories of Bravestarr are vague at best.

Anyway, here's what I was talking about

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Short Circuit.

I can come up with much more given time.

Edit: Okay, just for now I have to mention Arnold movies. T1 and T2 have already been mentioned, but I'll also throw in Commando and Predator.

The ninety's?

Someone said "Boy Meets World" and I second that! I loved it growing up.

My all time favorite song from the ninety's is "Sex and Candy".

Fresh Prince is still very fresh.

Etc.

However, my favorite movie, Vanilla Sky, was from the 2000's.

Also, System of a Down started in the ninety's (although they didn't become big until the 2000's)

You didn't "fall for" anything! Is it impossible for a guy to link to that video without it being a rickroll? It wasn't even misleading! Gah! *throws up his hands in exasperation*
The funny thing is, I actually thought you meant A.Y.B. and Zero Wing...
Isn't rickrolling more mainstream than AYB? I quite enjoy AYB myself, but I don't recall it being in, say, the mainstream press like rickrolling has. Maybe I just don't remember, though.

Seems pretty mainstream to me- or was mainstream, until it faded away..

And speaking of "AYB faded away", I just couldn't not include this:

The AYB retro-return date (Zero Wing Zero Hour) should be around AD 2021.

Has anyone on Pweb seen The Monster Squad? ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBG29nM_uEg )

The Flight of the Navigator thread has reminded me of some of the movies I liked to watch with my brothers, and The Monster Squad is high on the list.

Also, anyone seen The Wizard, Just One of the Guys, or Back to School?

*thinks* Once Bitten? No Retreat, No Surrender? The Heavenly Kid? Mannequin? Loverboy? Over the Top? Twins? Disorderlies? For Keeps?

Over the Top!

I bought it two years ago in a wal mart bargain bin for $4. I was so excited. I still haven't got up the nerve to take it out of the shrink wrap and actually watch it though.

There is only one stallone arm wrestling movie, and yeah, it's over the top.

Twins I loved as a kid too. Great Outdoors (omg, the Racoons, and "Big Bear Chase me!") Funny Farm, The Dirt Bike Kid, Not Quite Human, Not Quite Human 2.

and the king of them all:

the Cat from Outer Space, that movie kicked a lot of ass. :)
So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

The Wizard was my little brothers FAVORITE movie when he was little, so I watched it more times than I can count. And I own and love Mannequin.

Every time someone brings up the Wizard I have to ask: how was the girl shouting out specific tips during the finals like where to find the warp-whistles when no one in the U.S. had ever seen SMB3 before? :?
