GOD: I own you like I own the caves.
THE OCEAN: Not a chance. No comparison.
GOD: I made you. I could tame you.
THE OCEAN: At one time, maybe. But not now.
GOD: I will come to you, freeze you, break you.
THE OCEAN: I will spread myself like wings. I am a billion tiny feathers. You have no idea what's happened to me.

-Dave Eggers, HOW WE ARE HUNGRY

I actually can't stand Dave Eggers, but I do love this quote.
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

Standing armies can never consist of resolute robust men; they may be well-disciplined machines, but they will seldom contain men under the influence of strong passions, or with very vigorous faculties; and as for any depth of understanding, I will venture to affirm that it is as rarely to be found in the army as amongst women. And the cause, I maintain, is the same. It may be further observed that officers are also particularly attentive to their persons, fond of dancing, crowded rooms, adventures, and ridicule. Like the fair sex, the business of their lives is gallantry; they were taught to please, and they only live to please. Yet they do not lose their rank in the distinction of sexes, for they are still reckoned superior to women, though in what their superiority consists, beyond what I have just mentioned, it is difficult to discover.

"But thick as you are, pay attention- My words are a matter of Pride!"
Best movie EVER.

Also from there:
Hyena: Hey, who's the pig?
Pumbaa:Are you talking to me?
Timon: Oh-oh, you called him a pig.
Pumbaa: Are you talking to me?
Timon: Shouldn't have done that.
Pumbaa: Are you talking to me?!
Timon: Now they're in for it
Pumbaa: They call me MR. PIG! (charges at Hyenas) AAAAHH!

Link to the part (I SWEAR this isn't a rickroll, or a Bel-Air roll, or anything like that)

Man, this IS the best movie ever!
Who controls the British crown? Who keeps the metric system down?

Who leaves Atlantis off the maps? Who keeps the Martians under wraps?

Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?

Two fave quotes from recently read East of Eden by Steinbeck:

"I guess this personal hide-and-seek is not unusual. And some people are 'it' all their lives--hopelessly 'it.'"

Tom, the third son, was most like his father. He was born in fury and he lived in lightning. Tom came headlong into life. He was a giant in joy and enthusiasms. He didn't discover the world and its people, he created them. When he read his father's books, he was the first. He lived in a world shining and fresh and as uninspected as Eden on the sixth day. His mind plunged like a colt in a happy pasture, and when later the world put up fences he plunged against the wire, and when the final stockade surrounded him, he plunged right through it and out. And as he was capable of giant joy, so did he harbor huge sorrow, so that when his dog died the world ended.

it is not the sound of defeat;
it is the sound of singing that I hear.

What do you do with a B.A. in English,
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge,
Have earned me this useless degree.

There are some people in the world who say that writing stories,
or composing music or dancing sparkly dances is easy for them.
Nothing interferes with their ability to create.
While I celebrate their creative freedom,
a little part of me just wants to punch those motherfuckers in the teeth.

David and I are reading aloud to each other every night before bed. So far we've devoured THE HOBBIT, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, and most recently PETER PAN. Our next venture is, I think, THE WITCHES.

Most of you know how much I love PETER PAN, and there are more amazing quotes bundled up in that book than I have time to list.

But I actually got chills up my spine when we read the following:

"So, Pan," said Hook at last, "this is all your doing."

"Aye, James Hook," came the stern answer, "it is all my doing."

"Proud and insolent youth," said Hook, "prepare to meet thy doom."

"Dark and sinister man," Peter answered, "have at thee."

"There is nothing so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task." -- William James

I am putting this on every workspace I own, from here on out. I may have it tattood across my hands.

Note: that resolution comes in the midst of trying to complete my last class paper EVER that I've been putting off for weeks now till it's ridiculously overdue. It happens to be about William James.

For anybody who ever takes a class on the History of Psychology: When you have to write a paper on Pioneers of Psychology, pick someone interesting but only semi-famous and not particularly prolific. That limits the number of sources you have and prevents you from having to write about the implications of five million theories and their legacy in psychology and the world.

I love William James. But I wish to God I were writing this paper on someone else.
There's another home somewhere,
There's another glimpse of sky...
There's another way to lean

There's another life out there...

That's a funny quote, but not always a true quote.

When something goes wrong I usually laugh, not because I am going to blame it on someone but because how the irony. Of everyone's seriously somber expressions. Because, instead of getting mad it is easier to laugh.

I got Night Watch, what I thought was my favorite Terry Pratchett book but now that I've reread it, I think it is probably second behind Small Gods, and maybe third behind The Truth.

But anyway half the reason to get it was because I wanted some quotes passages that I loved but weren't on LSpace or in the Wit and Wisdom book, I marked them as I went through:
He didn't look around, and watch, and learn, and then say "This is how people are, how do we deal with it?" No, he sat and thought: "This is how people ought to be, how do we change them?"
People on the side of the The People always ended up disappointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. And so, the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people.

As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up.
one reason for the desertion rate was that those people of a practical turn of mind were working out the subtle economics. The People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road lacked all the big important buildings in the city, the ones that traditional rebels were supposed to take. It had no government offices, no banks and very few temples. It was almost completely bereft of important civic architecture.

All it had was the unimportant stuff. It had the entire slaughterhouse district, and the butter market, and the cheese market. It had the tobacco factories, and the candlemakers, and most of the fruit and vegetable warehouses, and the grain and flour stores. This meant that while the Republicans were being starved of the important things like government, banking services, and salvation, they were self-sufficient in terms of humdrum, everyday things like food and drink.

People are content to wait a long time for salvation, but prefer dinner to turn up inside an hour.

I <3 this:
Gerry: "I don't know what I said."

Holly: "You said it. You know you said it."

Gerry: "I don't know what I said, but I didn't mean it."

Holly: "Yes you did. You mean everything you say."

Gerry: "No, sometimes I mean nothing when I say something."

Holly: "Something is never nothing. It's always something."

Gerry: "Well, most of what I say is nothing, it's just something to say."

Holly: "No, men say it's just something to say in order to get away with saying something, but they know they're saying something everytime they say it."

Gerry:"Say what? What did I say?"
ETA from Scrubs:
Dr. Cox: Look, I love it that after six years I can still mess with your head. It is both a testament to my commitment and a glaring statement about your mental fragility. But still, as much as it pains me to say it, there's nothing I did or said that had any real impact on your relationship with the future Mr. Barbie.
Elliot: But I got all crazy and went off on him.
Dr. Cox: Of course you did, you're a woman. Sure, ya do come with a little extra crazy but what the heck, that's what makes you you.

...Thou shalt count to three and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excpeting that thou then proceeds to three. Five is right out. Once three, being the third number, be reached, thou shat lobbest thy holy hand grenade at thine enemy, who, being naughty in my site, shall snuff it! Amen."

Speaking about Monty Python (sorry, JL)..

Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't need to follow me, you don't need to follow anybody! You've got to think for yourselves! You're all individuals!

Brian: You're all different!
The Crowd (in unison): Yes, we are all different!
Man in Crowd: I'm not...
The Crowd: Shhh!

:( indeed, locke.
Something else I'm getting tired of in this country is all this stupid talk I have to listen to about children. That's all you hear about anymore, children: "Help the children, save the children, protect the children." You know what I say? f*** the children!

They're getting entirely too much attention. And I know what some of you are thinking: " Jesus, he's not going to attack children, is he?" Yes he is! He's going to attack children. And remember, this is Mr. Conductor talking; I know what I'm talking about.

Any research done on how to efficiently use computers has been long lost in the mad rush to upgrade systems to do things that aren't needed by people who don't understand what they are really supposed to do with them.

AND Ivan, on parting from Alyosha, went home to Fyodor Pavlovitch's house. But, strange to say, he was overcome by insufferable depression, which grew greater at every step he took towards the house. There was nothing strange in his being depressed; what was strange was that Ivan could not have said what was the cause of it. He had often been depressed before, and there was nothing surprising at his feeling so at such a moment, when he had broken off with everything had brought him here, and was preparing that day to make a new start and enter upon a new, unknown future. He would again be as solitary as ever, and though he had great hopes, and great- too great- expectations from life, he could not have given any definite account of his hopes, his expectations, or even his desires.
The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky

Ivan is my new fictional crush, with Alyosha running a close second.

That aside, this pretty well sums up my mood over the past couple of weeks.
