Pieces of the Internet that I couldn't live without.

Talk about anything under the sun or stars - but keep it civil. This is where we really get to know each other. Everyone is welcome, and invited!

Pieces of the Internet that I couldn't live without.

Postby Wind Swept » Sun Mar 30, 2008 11:02 pm

The best of the web, as far as I'm concerned, broken into random categories:

Too Incredibly Amazing to Live Without
xkcd
PostSecret
Double Fine
copper

Too Useful to Live Without
Google Docs
Google Reader
Gmail
Facebook

Too Promising-that-I-can-work-for-myself-in-the-Internet-age-without-starving-to-death to Live Without
Pure Pwnage
Penny Arcade
Homestar Runner

Hmm, this is the only thing on the list I haven't seen before.
His non-Internet presense is also awesome. (I.e. dead trees) Though personally, I think I'd rather put Dresden Codak in it's place, but to each their own.
Too Useful to Live Without
...
Facebook
Ugh, "useful" and "facebook" in the same thought? I'm going to vomit.

I feel like I'd add some kind of news site to the 'useful' list. I read slashdot myself, but I'm sure there are better places...

Oh, and one more little addition... http://www.philoticweb.net/ . ;)

I also feel like mentioning the sites http://www.purple.com/ , http://www.tired.com/ , and http://www.milk.com/ (if for nothing else but http://www.milk.com/faq/ ).

Both Facebook and MySpace can rot in hell.

I don't know why I hate them, but I do. They're the poo-stained boxers of the internet. They're the period panties of the internet. Seriously.

I can actually live without the internet now. I found I was too addicted to it, so I broke that addiction long ago. There was only one thing holding me to my need-for-internet, but that person has been long gone. I actually enjoy getting away from the internet for extended periods of time now.

KXCD is funny as s*** though. :D

How coincidental that you bring up Double Fine. I was just there a few days ago, laughing at all of the prose. Especially on the "apply for a job" page. Or had you linked there previously, and that was why I was perusing the mind of Mr. Schafer? No matter. I truly wish I worked there every day.

Okay, I know facebook gets a bad rap, and it has been going downhill recently (esepcially since they removed the ability to find people in your classes) but I still find it extremely useful. I keep in touch with all my close friends, but it's nice to have a casual way of keeping in touch with people I'm not so close to. I don't know how many times I've used facebook because I couldn't remember someone's phone number/email/aim. On top of that, I love looking through photos that people post.

Wikipedia is also on my list (if I have to defend that one too, I will), and I am quickly becoming enamored with craigslist.

I can live without all of the internet, but I like visiting:

Pweb
Hatrack forums for their recommendations on movies.
Ali's blog to keep up with her school life and the like.
http://www.livejournal.com to keep up with my rapidly disappearing group of online friends.
Gmail
YouTube for watching music videos I can't find on any music channels anymore.

If you think I've been neglecting it, a good way to get me to go write something is to mention it. Oops.

I forgot to add that I'm totally flattered. There are a lot more interesting blogs out there.

As for me:
Pweb
Livejournal
Rate Your Students
sheldoncomics.com
Order of the Stick
Hatrack
my email
Google
the university's collection of online journal archives and databases - I can't imagine not having access to JSTOR, ITER, the MLA, MED, and Acta Sanctorum, and others at just the click of a mouse

That's exactly how I feel about facebook. It just a nice way to keep in touch. Parts of it are annoying, but there is always the "ignore" button.

You can click boxes not to have them email you.

Places I would have trouble living without:

Pweb
Facebook
Gmail/Google Calendar
Blogger (my blog and my friends blogs)
Television Without Pity
various library blogs, mainly Tales from the Liberry and Librarians who say MoFo
Postsecret
Wikipedia
Most recently - BabyCenter.ca
One Duck to rule them all.

It needs to be about 20% cooler.

Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged: my favorite fandub of all time, and one that made me laugh my heart out every episode.
Watch it even if you're not into Yu-Gi-Oh, or into anime at all; a main source of laughter in the abridged series is pointing out all the impossibilities that happen in the show without any explanation.

EDIT: Sorry for wrong link.

I would shrivel up and die without my RSS feeder. Seriously, I have no idea how life existed without it. (if you don't know what this is, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klgLsSxGsU )

And no, I'm not Rickrolling you. Promise.

On it I have about 30 or so graphic design, food, and travel blogs which I read decently regularly... plus Digg feeds, xkcd, Dinosaur comics, Questionable Content, and some friends' blogs.
I've also gotten kind of addicted to Twitter lately. (again, if you don't know what that is, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddO9idmax0o )
And then the standard Facebook, Gmail and the like.
And Post Secret!
Anyone else use del.icio.us for bookmarking?
