The horror is upon us. The "Christmas at Battle School" book arrives this fall. I know OSC has to pay the bills, but he probably could've just threatened to publish this thing unless we all went out and bought an extra copy of Ender's Game. Ugh.

Well, it isn't actually called "Christmas at Battle School," and the cover isn't a bunch of Norman Rockwell-inspired kids passing gifts. So I feel all hope is not lost. Don't judge before reading lest ye be... wrong. Maybe.

I feel you are only saying that, Mich, because there is almost no information on what the book is actually about on the Amazon page. However, Hatrack isn't so lucky...

Warning: abandon all hope, all ye who read below.
Orson Scott Card offers a Christmas gift to his millions of fans with this short novel set during Ender's first years at the Battle School where it is forbidden to celebrate religious holidays.

The children come from many nations, many religions; while they are being trained for war, religious conflict between them is not on the curriculum. But Dink Meeker, one of the older students, doesn't see it that way. He thinks that giving gifts isn't exactly a religious observation, and on Sinterklaas Day he tucks a present into another student's shoe.

This small act of rebellion sets off a battle royal between the students and the staff, but some surprising alliances form when Ender comes up against a new student, Zeck Morgan. The War over Santa Claus will force everyone to make a choice.
It's really only the third paragraph that irks me significantly, I think. The second sounds like something Dink would do; the first seems a bit odd to base a story on, but whatever. That last damn paragraph, though. I've never really thought of the word "filler" in association with books, but...

If I hear that he got the idea for this from that Pweb prank, there's gonna be hell to pay.

[Edit: I've edited this like five times and it still doesn't seem all that coherent to me. This announcement is just... strange, I think it's throwing me off, somehow.]

The Enderverse may have just jumped the shark. Only "Shadows in Flight" can save it. I hope that comes along some time soon.

Yikes.. I still plan on reading it though.. odd that it hasn't really elicited a larger response.

I frankly want to cry. I'm with neo on this one--the Enderverse has jumped the shark. But I probably will read it, just to torture myself. Besides, it might not be too bad.

What happened to Santa and the reindeer trying to reach escape velocity to get to Battle School? I would enjoy that so much more than this "War on Santa".

Imagine Santa retro-fitting Rudolph with rockets.

I actually did see that... however, in a noble attempt to breathe life into P-Web once again, I decided to ignore simple facts and attempt to create a debate that would not be as one-sided as it obviously should be.

:D

Yes... yes, it does look bad. Even I can't deny that.

OSC has clearly been getting really into fan-fiction these days and has decided to dabble.

Next will be that Ender/Bean slashfic he's been working on.

I had originally said something about this sounding like fanfiction, but edited it out, since I couldn't seem to find a good way to say it. But you, sir... bravo.

I'm still kind of concerned that OSC hasn't yet wrung the last shred of marketable story from this universe. For instance, what happened to that guy Ender eats dinner with the first day in Battle School? I demand to know his backstory! How about a romance (first-base only, of course) between Teenage Graff and Carlotta? There had to be SOMETHING behind all that bickering in Ender's Shadow. Major Anderson's career as the NFL comissioner -- a veritable bounty of gripping yarns! :Facewall:

Zeck Morgan

Am I the only one who read that as "Zach Morris" the first time through?

I'm still waiting for him to decide that "Ender's Puppy" is really a worthwhile endeavor.

Now we need to dig up William Golding and have him write a Christmas on the Lord of the Flies island.

I want to say so much more about him turning the kid killing Ender into a new symbol of the holiday, but I'm having a hard time expressing it the way I want, so all I will say is this:

Call me crazy, but I'll read anything in the Enderverse... I know, it's people like me that keep him writing these things, but alas, what if it's good?

Like we aren't going to read it? It's an Ender book, so it already has a built in market even if it is bad. You know fans, myself included, are going to buy the book because it's an Enderverse book.....

I will let OSC know that all he has to do is take a s*** on some blank pages and call it an Enderverse book to make money, he's clearly going to too much effort.

I'll wait till you write a review, then. If it's half-decent I might get it when it goes to pb.

XD, I actually understood that one =)

Anyway, maybe it's not all that bad as it seems.. you know, OSC wrote it, and we all love OSC. So it doesn't have to be bad, just because it's based on a bad idea..

My memory is not my best quality, but I don't think that's quite true. I just thought you couldn't offer it "on behalf of the CA" or whatever. Someone feel free to correct me, though. If that's one of the benefits, then that's pretty cool.

Well, now I want it clarified, too.

I was almost 100% positive that's where the sushi and other misc. stuff came from; they wanted to give something and couldn't do the limeaide because that is C.A. territory.

Traditionally only members of the CA would give it and I am not certain if that is still the case.
That doesn't really prohibit you. I'm guessing it's kind of a gray area, probably because nobody really remembers.

I almost caved and bought it...

I just happened across a stack in a bookstore, and the sensation of holding a brand new Enderverse book in my hands came this close to breaking my resolve. Maybe if the store wasn't still charging the Canadian cover price ($14.95 or about $16.00 US at the current exchange rate) I would have actually done it.
