Help Kim Decide What to Take to Africa

Postby powerfulcheese04 » Thu Apr 05, 2007 8:56 pm

I'm going to Malawi from May 25 to July 21 as part of an international medical internship. (I'll be working in a Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative Center of Excellence (clinic for pediatric AIDS patients.))

I'll be living with a BIPAI doctor and going to work with them. I'm not sure yet what kind of free time I'll have/how much freedom to move around.

It's going to be their "winter" (which according to the tourist website is lows in the 50's and highs in the high 70's, with an average around 70.)

I'm already planning on taking several pairs of jeans and probably 3 weeks of tshirts. Some skirts. Some nice shirts. My favorite tennis shoes. A pair of nice shoes. Probably a new pair of tennis shoes.

I'm going to take my camera. I already have a 512 MB memory card. I think I'm going to buy another one (rather than take my laptop.) I'll also be taking my ipod.

Where's a good place to get an adaptor?

Any other advice?
-Kim

Hey, my cousin's going to Africa! To work on an AIDS team, too. Weird.

Bring boots, if it might rain. And make sure at least one pair of shoes is good for walking - lots of walking.

Sunscreen and burn lotion. And a hat. Burnt scalp hurts like nothing else.

And I'd suggest bringing some hard candies. Not easy to find over there, and always appreciated.

Keep us posted!

Apple iPod USB Power Adapter

Apple World Travel Adapter Kit

I believe there's an Apple Store in Houston if you'd prefer to get them locally instead of online.

Er, maybe that won't work. The travel kit mentions just about everywhere but Africa. You'll need to check to see what kind of plug they use there, I guess.

I generally hate Radio Shack (I think they are overpriced) but they are a good place for international adapters that are hard to find elsewhere. Although if you have enough time, you can find anything online.

It might seem obvious, but take a notebook to write down anything you think of in it.

And, if it won't make you too homesick, take something homey.

Bring me, bring me!
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

Bring some of you favorite snacks and candy bars... you can't find them there and if you do they taste different.

Gatorade or powerade powder. when I was in Africa and all we had was water and beer.... it made day time drinks less bland.

good walking shoes/hiking boots

bring a good book!

obviously.
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

I'm soooo jealous, Kim.
I have no idea what you'd need to bring, though.
