Orson Scott Card
Orson Scott Card
We know he lives in Greensboro, NC, but has anyone ever gone there and looked him up? He has to be in the phone book right? I always have this daydream of me going to NC, looking him up in the phonebook, and stopping by and chatting about the books and having him tell me how much I remind him of Crazy Tom or Dink or something like that happening. Would he talk to me if I went and/or would I even be able to find him?
I was thinking about him as the first stop along my road trip from DC to the Pacific.

You're kidding, right?
Give the man his privacy; his home isn't a bookstore, open to anyone who wants to stop by for a book signing and a chat to hear how they remind him of one of his characters.
With that said, he is listed and I'm sure he's nice enough to at least tell you he's busy...if he's not so busy that he's off somewhere.

No, me reminding him of one of his characters is the fantasy part, not going to happen. But the other part, I've heard from people who have met him in bookstores and talked to him so I think it could happen.

No, man. Just no.
He's not your friend. You can't just call him up and go for coffee. He's a guy with a life and a family. I'm sure he appriciates that you're a fan, but just calling him up? Not something you should do.
Also, try asking the folks on the forums on hatrack.com, some of them know Card and might give you some advice.

So if that plan is shot, does hatrack have a "ask orson" thread where you can ask questions and he answers some of them or something like that?

Oh, chill out. Lots of people have dreams of meeting their favorite SF writer. Best to try for it at a convention, or maybe haunt Hatrack until he mentions some place and time he's open to it.Are you insane or just incompetant?

When Stranger in a Strange Land made its second go-round as a cult Hippie classic, the first wave of SF fans had been bad enough, but when the hippies got into the act, Heinlein had them camped on his Colorado Springs lawn in masses.
It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

The "Ask orson" thing on hatrack would just allow him to answer the questions he found most interesting or whatever, not all of them. I saw a professional athlete who had something like that.

In the pull down menu, one of the options is "Questions for and about OSC" but they ask you to read the list of FAQs on the right side of the page before writing.
That is really the only way you should approach him.

Quiet you. I'm a cranky oldbie.
The incompetent comment had to do with the fact that I gave him a link and he didn't click it.

This seemed an appropriate place to say/ask this.
Is it just me that's a grump/is it that I'm a semi-oldie and thus part of the cycle of annoy, then be annoyed/is it just the way it is around here, or are there an awful lot of moronic newbies running around these days? Like seriously annoying, stupid, obnoxious little gangs of newbies.

More or less. As i see it, all we can do is try to set an example and guide them to be more responsible, mature members.
And lest you forget, oldies can be just as obnoxious as newbies.

The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

I think Pweb kinda goes in cycles. I remember a couple years ago we had a serious influx of annoying newbies.
I imagine it goes something like this:
There is a surge of newbies
Newbies are annoying
Oldbies pick on newbies
Potential newbies see this and decide not to join
Newbies either learn to fit in, or get fed up and leave
Pweb is a nice, friendly place (relatively speaking)
Potential newbies see how nice and friendly it is, and we get another surge
And so on and so forth

Nah, still works. From the keyboard of Orson Scott Card himself:that makes me sad, as the "Hot Soup" joke is less amusing now.
[me: (something to the effect of) How do you pronounce Han Tzu? Your short story says it is "Han Ze" but your books suggest "Tzu" since his nickname is Hot Soup. Why?
The answer is embarrassingly simple. When I first created the character of Hot Soup, I had no idea how Romanized Chinese words should be pronounced. I assumed Han Tzu would be pronounced as written. Then the Chinese government rationalized the romanized writing system to conform with actual pronunciation today (the old system was invented by Jesuits, I understand, and so long ago that it does not reflect changes in pronunciation since that time). Now Han Tzu's name is written Han Ze. Bummer, huh?
So I had to have the family deliberately use the OLD spelling of the name, and then the kids in battle school, seeing the name WRITTEN, would make the joke; and the joke name would continue despite Han Tzu's attempts to explain the correct pronunciation. In other words, I made the other kids as ignorant as I was when writing the book <grin>.
Knowledge is bliss. Ignorance just doesn't know what bliss means.
Too be he didn't just use Zhu.
And to the original poster... you know there's laws against stalking right?
Wasn't OSC at the Ender convention held a while back, or was that just all fans?

Sorry, eri. Still a serious newbie. It takes a year or two at least to lose that annoyingly bright newbie gleam.
Unless you're a really cranky oldbie like me who sees almost everyone who joined later than May '02 as a newbie. Some are less-new-newbies, and some are really-new-newbies. The "less" or "really" designations are what take time to acquire. Generally being "less" requires not only a couple years of presence, but contribution, growth, and ability to participate within the general pweb expectations.
Nothing personal. I'm just crotchety.
Also, I fully realise that there are some SERIOUSLY oldbies around who still think I'm a newbie.

You're complicated, because you were an oldbie to me when I joined Sheroes, and you've never lost some of that awe.
