Do you want Jackson directing The Hobbit?
You can find all the info surrounding whether or not Jackson will be directing The Hobbit and a mysterious in-between movie here.
For a brief recap, Jackson and New Line are pissy at each other so New Line doesn't want Jackson doing the movie anymore. MGM and Saul Zaentz, who is the owner of Tolkien Enterprises, both seem quite in favour of getting Jackson on board.
I'm worried that if Jackson doesn't do it, it will be absolutely butchered.
EDIT: Subject changed to avoid sexual innuendoes of "doing the Hobbit"

Jackson did LOTR so well, why not let him do the hobbit?
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

I'm a huge fan of LOTR and Peter Jackson, I'd hate to have anyone else do The Hobbit. As far as I'm concerned, he did so well on those films, anyone else directing would be sacrilege. I mean, come on, did you see those movies? Every set, every character, it was all beautiful. *goes fangirl over Elijah Wood*
:edit: I don't know what book you guys have been reading, but The Hobbit has some fairly dark moments. see: Murkwood Forest

Obviously, you can't have something like LotR and The Hobbit be directed by the same person. They're just too different. That would be like having one author try to write both books. It just can't be done! [/sarcasm]
I think Peter Jackson would do a great job with The Hobbit. While it definitely is lighter, it's still set in the same world, and I would want it to have the same feel as LotR.

The tone in that particular part of the book is fairly dark. Come on, there's spider monsters and the dwarves were captured! That sounds dark to me.By dark I meant tone, not lack of light.edit: I don't know what book you guys have been reading, but The Hobbit has some fairly dark moments. see: Murkwood Forest
s'really not that dark. The tone that is.

around the corner there may wait
a new road or a secret gate
and though I oft have passed them by
a day will come
at last when I
will take the hidden paths that run
west of the moon
east of the sun
That song characterizes the hobbit. It's both lighthearted (in tune and imagery at the start) but the underlying message is quite dark.
Kinda multi-layered.

Well, yes, I think Peter Jackson should direct it, but he has to want to do it.
also, about the second movie
also, about the second movie
The first movie would be a direct adaptation of The Hobbit, and the second would be drawn from footnotes and source material connecting The Hobbit with The Lord of the Rings.

I'm afraid any movie directed by MJ & starring a halfling is bound to be NC-17.I dunno, I think he could handle it. And it wouldn't matter if it was dark or light, he's done both.Michael Jackson?
No way. That would be way too creepy.
As for the other Jackson, it seems like it should be a much simpler film than LOTR or King Kong (oh yeah, you remember). It'd be a shame if he turned a cool adventure into some sprawling epic.

I didn't much like the way Jackson handled The Two Towers and The Return of the King (alas, my rants are lost now). You could go so far as to say he ruined the second book/movie entirely.
That said, I'd be willing to give him a chance at The Hobbit. I think he has an ethical right to it. And since everyone seems to think he did such an amazing job, New Line would be idiots to give it to anyone else. Also, I think dwarf-tossing jokes might fit better in the lighter Hobbit (oh wait, he's already used that gimmick up, in a totally unsuitable way).

Oooooh, that's dangerous to say around me. I'm practically obsessed with Lord of the Rings, books and movies. I loved the way Jackson made them. Yes, I'll admit, they weren't totally on with the books, but you have to make some allowances when going from a narrative format in the book to a more visual format that cannot rely on a narrator. Also, considering that "Return of the King" was only half a book, where the other half was appenicies and further writings, I think the movies were split up fairly equally. Yes, I'm well aware that Shelob was in Two Towers, not RotK, but if he followed the books exactly, the RotK would have only been an hour and a half, and the others over four hours.I didn't much like the way Jackson handled The Two Towers and The Return of the King (alas, my rants are lost now). The same will happen if the Ender's Game movie is made. The movie will not be as good as the book, there will be parts missing, and characters who were more prominent in the book will be left out. It's part of the process when someone makes a movie based on a book. However, if it's done well and doesn't feel too rushed *coughSorcerorsStonecough* it will be a good movie, as Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies were.

I must be the only Lord of the the Rings fan who doesn't even care if the Hobbit is adapted at all. It's just such a dull story compared to LotR. I've only read the book once, compared to LotR which I've read about 6 times. I do think that P.J. did an excellent job with the trilogy, so if anyone does it, it may as well be him.

I'm with neo on this. I don't really care if the Hobbit gets made into a movie. I'll see it, but I'll still love LotR more.
My biggest problem the Two Towers movie was the whole Osgiliath side-journey. I would have loved to see the scouring of the Shire, but RotK didn't need to be any longer.

Anyone catch wind of the PR news release from New Line today? From John Scalzi's Blog:
Note that Jackson will be producing, but not directing. Should be interesting.Los Angeles, CA (Tuesday, December 18, 2007) Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson; Harry Sloan, Chairman and CEO, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM); Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of New Line Cinema have jointly announced today that they have entered into the following series of agreements:
* MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, “The Hobbit†and a sequel to “The Hobbit.†New Line will distribute in North America and MGM will distribute internationally.
* Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will serve as Executive Producers of two films based on “The Hobbit.†New Line will manage the production of the films, which will be shot simultaneously.
* Peter Jackson and New Line have settled all litigation relating to the “Lord of the Rings†(LOTR) Trilogy.
Said Peter Jackson, “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey.â€

Yeah, the Hobbit's about half as long and half as complex as any of the LotR volumes. I don't see why two movies are necessary other than to make twice as much money.
