We also talked about the fact that it is not just about travel, but places to stay, which is why it makes sense to have it in a place where a lot of PWEBers already live, because then you can have people sleeping over at their houses. Who do we have in Chi?chicago looks a lot more central than NYC.

Brick wall, brick wall, brick wall. This is the trouble with pwebcon.
Money: the majority of people on this board are under-30 poor students/just starting out.
Location: we're scattered all over the map.
Planning: someone needs to take the reigns and plan this thing, booking a hotel with a block of rooms, figuring out what we're going to "do" at a con, etc.
If all of this can be solved, we can do it.
ps. not trying to be too much of a pessimist here... I really want to have pwebcon sometime, but reality is difficult.

People could always stay in hostels...

If people can handle being 3-4 per room, hotel costs aren't actually too bad. Might be a $100 room, but between four people, it's only $25/night.
Just something to think about.

Chicago I could drive to. Also, Minneapolis.
However, it's looking like NYC looks best for most people.
I dunno. It all depends on what I'm doing this summer, anyways.
PWEBcon... such a bright shooting star of an idea that always burns out so sadly quickly.

I'm interested, but not willing to travel out of north central Texas.
Also...I think it would be cool to have badges with our screen name, real name, and an avatar we've used on it. Whoever sets the con up (if it comes out of the woodworks) should totally consider that. I only say to use an avatar because some people *coughsmecoughs* don't bother learning many names, but avatars. Even if they change, I can figure them out and associate the new avatar with their persona.

Wikipedia gives a good definition
It's basically like a backpacker's hotel. Rent a bed instead of a room, share a kitchen, bathroom etc. I stayed in one in Australia and it was pretty cool.

This has been talked about for so long in so many variations, I would love to see it actually done. As for it being in NYC, y'all know I'd be thrilled. I think the city makes perfect sense, aside from the fact that I live here. The main one being that there are SO many wonderful things to do together, and a great many of them are free or inexpensive, especially in the summer. Yes, it's an expensive city, but there are also really great inexpensive options, especially in the non-Manhattan buroughs, and public transportation would make this really easy. Those were just a few of the reasons that Hatrack chose to have their con in the city a while ago. Maybe one of our cross-over members might actually remember some of the info about what they came up with while they were planning, or a link to the planning threads?
A few things...
As far as hosting this goes, I would be totally up for helping with the planning, what to do in the city, eating arrangements, and the like, along with maybe my other lovely NYC ladies (?) or anyone else who'd be willing to pitch in to the research.
About housing, for my part I would be totally up for having at least a few people stay with me. However, all of that is hinging on whether or not I decide to stay in the city over the summer, and if so what I decide to do for housing next year (which will more than likely mean buckling down and renting an apartment), all of which is still up in the air and will stay that way for a few more months. But I think it's safe to say that I can more than likely pitch in to at least a few people's lodging in the city. As for other options, as long as people are willing to not stay directly in Manhattan, there are relatively cheap hotel options, which when split would end up being somewhere around $25 dollars each-ish. There are also a lot of great Hostels in the city which are specifically designed for traveling students, and insanely affordable.
As far as time goes, I think that doing it during the summer makes a lot of sense for most everyone, and would be a lot easier to work with schools. For me personally, if it gets too late in the summer I possibly won't be able to do it, so early to mid July seems about perfect.
Anyway, those are some thoughts from my end. I would love to see this happen this time around.

That's so, so true. There are terrific, cheap options that are a lot of fun. Museums are also way underrated, and I (for one) love them. This has been talked about for so long in so many variations, I would love to see it actually done. I'd be willing to actually DO the bookings and whatnot if the NYC ladies would research a bit and tell me what hostel (because i think that sounds like a great option; i could bring a little hospital grade lysol from work if anyone has a wimpy immune system) to book. I would also need them to tell me what activites would be best and I could work up an itenerary from there. I'm a secretary at heart. The whole nursing thing just pays the bills.
Yay, I'm a llama again!
Are there really enough people here in this forum, for this really to work? And another question is would you be able to get someone like Orson Scott Card or others to appear? Otherwise it sounds like this would just be more of a get together.

Puppets, several years ago the Cards sponsered an Endercon, which was quite large, much more formally organized, and more of the kind of thing I think you're thinking of. What we here have wanted to do for many years and have talked about at various stages is more a gathering of all of the people who have become part of the community over the years. But that grand idea has always been known as Pwebcon.

I know we had a hatrack.ca a few years ago and it was a blast. Really, it doesn't need to be a huge con to be a lot of fun. There's nothing quite like hanging out and going to museums and restaurants with random people you've never met before, but you've seen posting plenty.
