Re: Olympics
About the opening ceremony: I'm sad we got Harry Potter but no Doctor Who or Tolkien. But pretty cool other than that!
Also, I only knew the name Danny Boyle from his work on Sunshine, so that was weird.

I LOVE Millions. Fantastic movie. I find it weird to reconcile that movie with the fact that he directed 28 Days Later and Trainspotting.Danny Boyle directed one of my favorite movies ever, Millions (not Slumdog Millionaire).
ETA: Oh, and I am also excited about the Olympics. I don't find summer nearly as fascinating as winter, but I am excited to show Ginny the cool sports like Gymnastics and Diving.

So the whole controversy over the American's uniforms being made in China? The REAL thing we should have been protesting is how BORING they were. Seriously blah. Ralph Lauren, you should be disappointed with yourself.
England had rockin' awesome uniforms!

I love that I get interested in sports I don't care about the rest of the time.

Satisfying day. Watched basketball, women's indoor volleyball, some swimming heats, fencing, and a little badminton.

Just watched the women's synchronized diving... and I get all teary eyed when the athletes get all teary eyed and overwhelmed when the scores came up and they won silver!

Canoe Slalom? Who knew that was a sport? It looks pretty fun though.

Re: Olympics
Thanks a lot, Denver Post, for ruining the results of Missy Franklin's race for everyone. The stupid headline was on my iGoogle this afternoon, so the race was not full of tension and excitement, like it should have been.

Don't worry, NBC would've ruined it for you anyway. They had a promo right before the race showing her winning the medal.

Re: Olympics
What is the deal with Olympics coverage in the States? I'm hearing all this negative stuff... is there no channels airing it live at all?? That sucks so much for you guys! I am able to watch it all live online - though I am only 3.5 hours off of London, and I'm home during the day.

Re: Olympics
Nope, no live stream, NBC blocks that. They also edited the crap out of the opening ceremonies, including sticking an interview with Micheal Phelps where the tribute to the London tube bombings was.

You can watch live streaming of all events online with a cable/satellite/whatever subscription that includes msnbc and cnbc (As most do, I believe).

Re: Olympics
All I've heard is no one has been able to watch the live streams because they're garbled or pixelated. In any event, NBC promised live coverage of the events, which they are not upholding.

I was bummed to find the subscription requirement because that was definitely not advertised. But I haven't had any trouble with the feeds any more than the live coverage on TV (whihc has occasionally been garbled and weird. Especially Sunday.)

Re: Olympics
We don't have tv, and it sucks that we can't watch it online. Lots of people are upset about the coverage, apparently. It made the Borowitz Report in the New Yorker.

Re: Olympics
The women's gymnastics was SO AMAZING last night! Especially the vault by McKayla Maroney! I am kind of in love with this year's gymnastics team. Wow. Just awesome. And they're so NICE. Watching them hold hands while waiting to see if they'd won was so, so adorable. Love.
I felt so bad for the two Russian girls that blew it. You could just see how upset they were with themselves.

Re: Olympics
Go USA women's gymnastics! Go USA relay!!
I, too, was sad for the Russian girls. But I was also happy to see their coaches hugging them even when they messed up and happy to see that the girls were allowed to display such emotions. In times yonder, such things would not have been possible for someone from Russia. So yay for that!
I love that my kids are so excited about the Olympics and beg to stay up later to watch more.

It took me 23.6 seconds (I only got one star ) to jump all but two of the hurdles -I did run into them, though, from either mistiming or not knowing I was supposed to push the up arrow...- on the Google doodle of the day. That makes me sad; I thought I was Olympics caliber in arrowing with my fingers.

Re: Olympics
It's really weird watching the Olympics as an ex-pat. All the tv channels are (naturally) focussing on British athletes, making it very hard to get into cheering Canada on.
