There are very few famous people's deaths that have upset me. This is one of them.

The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Douglas Adams.

I'm not trying to discredit or lessen that whatsoever. I understand what it's like to feel upset over someone's death, even if I didn't personally know them, so I'm sorry it has happened. I was simply stating his has not hit me on any real, personal level and pretending it has would be disrespectful.

I was already somewhat saddened when he stepped down as CEO and the company's public face a little while ago. I don't buy many Apple products, but I enjoyed his launch presentations.

As a tribute to Mr. Jobs, and to put into perspective how much technology has changed in the last 10 years, I present his introduction of the first ever ipod in 2001

Feeling sad about it. :(

I read the news on my iPad. Typing this response on my MacBook Pro. First computer was a Mac SE. So I'm a Mac geek from way back. ;)

Also, today's xkcd is relevant to this thread: http://xkcd.com/961/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

CUPERTINO, CA—Steve Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple Computers and the only American in the country who had any clue what the f*** he was doing, died Wednesday at the age of 56. "We haven't just lost a great innovator, leader, and businessman, we've literally lost the only person in this country who actually had his s*** together and knew what the hell was going on," a statement from President Barack Obama read in part, adding that Jobs will be remembered both for the life-changing products he created and for the fact that he was able to sit down, think clearly, and execute his ideas—attributes he shared with no other U.S. citizen. "This is a dark time for our country, because the reality is none of the 300 million or so Americans who remain can actually get anything done or make things happen. Those days are over." Obama added that if anyone could fill the void left by Jobs it would probably be himself, but said that at this point he honestly doesn’t have the slightest notion what he’s doing anymore.

Apparently, Westboro Baptist Church (the "God hates Fags" people) already tweeted that they were, essentially, happy that Steve Jobs had died. They tweeted this message from an iPhone.

I wish I was kidding.

I heard about that. I really do not see what they're protesting about him. Then again, I don't get why they protest most of what they protest.

His death wasn't a huge surprise for me, but it's still hitting me for a few different reasons.

I have too much personal experience with Pancreatic Cancer. Way too much. My father-in-law died of pancreatic cancer in December of 2008 after a two and a half year bout with it, and then just this spring, my brother's father-in-law was diagnosed. He managed to fight for about two months before he passed. One of my really good friends lost her mom to the disease as well, and she serves on the board of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network now. I've been to fundraisers, and other events and met survivors. Several of those survivors have since lost their battles.

Pancreatic cancer is a nasty nasty disease, and research for it is vastly underfunded. Today the 5 year survival rate is a mere 6%. In 1975, the 5 year survival rate was 3%. In 40 years, there has been virtually no change. It's the 10th most diagnosed cancer in the US, and the 4th leading cause of cancer death. 75% of patients die in the first year after diagnosis. Here are more facts about the disease.

Not only do I have personal experience with the disease, but I have a significant amount of experience with all the technological aspects of the Jobsian era. I learned to program (logowriter) on an Apple IIGS in elementary school. The first computer I ever owned was a Mac Performa 400. I've had lots of Macs, and my wife currently lives on her MacBook Pro. In addition to the fact that I use GUIs, and other apple inventions all the time.

Jobs was a perfectionist, and a controlling aspect of Apple. When he stepped down, I knew that had to mean his time was short. He was not the kind of person who would have stepped down if he wasn't forced out.

Sad day. I just hope this helps improve Pancreatic Cancer awareness.

As for Westboro Baptist, I'm convinced that Fred Phelps is a scam artist. http://kanewj.com/wbc/ this pretty much sums up my thinking on the issue.

My husband has always hated him with a passion. So, while I'm sad that any person has died, I'm glad he won't be on TV anymore.

if you were in chat last night you already know part of this story, but for the sake of everyone who was there, and others, I'll share something that happened last night.

It's not national news or anything, but I was working late last night and checked twitter and saw mentions of something going down in my city. I looked into it a little more and found out that it was a guy with self-inflicted gunshot wounds laying in a driveway next to a bomb. The authorities evacuated the neighborhood and called in the bomb squad. This is the information I knew as of last night, and it kind of freaked me out. This was going down 3.5 miles from my house, so I called my wife and she had no idea that anything was happening.

This morning I looked it up and discovered that the man was already dead when they evacuated the neighborhood. He died of an apparent suicide, and an explosive device fell out of his backpack. The bomb squad was able to successfully detonate the device in an enclosed space and everyone is now safe.

The whole scenario lead to a few minutes of sheer panic when I called my wife's cell phone and she didn't answer, and then took 5 rings to answer the house phone. She was setting up the christmas tree and had no idea that anything was amiss.

That's pretty ridiculous. Of Wisconsin, of course.

I mean, you go to Michigan, ask someone where they're from, they'll hold up a hand and point on the palm to their approximate location. Geeze.

I guess that's fair, if you ignore the fact Wisconsinites have been doing exactly this for as long as I've known anyone from Wisconsin. I'll give you the fact that Michigan's lower peninsula does indeed look like a mitten, but that leaves out a huge section of the state. Wisconsin doesn't believe in alienating our citizens by only recognizing half of our land mass in the state's nickname. I guess if you were to take a sledgehammer to your hand, you could accurately represent both of Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas in mitten form but Wisconsin requires no such self mutilation.

The mittens are off Michigan, and Wisconsin will claim our rightful title.

FYI: that happened last year.

The case is currently on appeal, because (among other things) the judge didn't even address the only U.S. Supreme Court precedent on point (which had held in 1972 that Minnesota's prohibition of same-sex marriages did not violate the 1st, 8th, 9th, or 14th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution).

Pentagon drafts today’s kids to build tomorrow’s aerial killers
If your first thought when seeing this is that the program is Orson Scott Cardesque, you aren’t alone. The idea of children developing the next great drone is something out of science fiction nightmare, though one of the directors of the program, Dale Dougherty, was quick to point out that the students will not be building weapons for the military. That point seems a bit shaky when coupled with him saying “It’s naive to think the world of tech is not engaged with the military on every level and vice versa.”

getting kids involved with science, engineering, and other high technology pursuits has to be considered a good thing, though it’s hard to see this particular application as less than insidious.
This, exactly. If it were removed from the DoD/military and done for the sake of getting kids interested in science and innovation and making the world a better place, then absolutely a good thing. But for military purposes? Sick and frightening.
