Ender Publication Order

Postby philoticweb » Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:28 pm

This is the publication order for all of the Ender stories. Let me know if anything looks out of place, needs to be changed, or added. Thanks!

I hope this list will help someone who wants to read the stories in publication order.

Novel
- Main novels.
- Reference books are marked with an asterisk (*).
"Short Story"
- The short stories compilation books are in parentheses next to the short stories they contain (First Meetings, InterGalactic Medicine Show). The short stories are listed when they were originally released, not when they were released in the compilation book.
Comic
- The comics can be found in compilation books as well. Gold Bug is in the hardcover version of Red Prophet: The Tales of Alvin Maker Vol. 1. Recruiting Valentine, War of Gifts, Mazer in Prison, and The League War are in the compilation War of Gifts.

Awesome list.

For clarity sake, I would note [comic] following a comic title.

Also, you have Ender's Game:Battle School #5, and Ender's Shadow:Battle School #6, but no ES:BS #5.

I actually didn't know about "Earth Unaware". A prequel novel could be quite interesting. I look forward to reading it.

The only one you're missing is "Ender in Exile".

Ender Short Story Information

Postby philoticweb » Sun Dec 04, 2011 10:47 pm

There are various places to read the Ender short stories.

"Gloriously Bright" is published in the January 1991 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact.

First Meetings in Ender's Universe has four short stories:
"The Polish Boy"
"Teacher's Pest"
"Ender's Game"
"The Investment Counselor"

The book was first titled First Meetings: Three Stories from the Enderverse and then First Meetings in the Enderverse.

-------------------------------------------------

The remaining short stories are found on Orson Scott Card's online magazine, InterGalactic Medicine Show.
"Mazer in Prison" (Issue 1)
"Pretty Boy" (Issue 2)
"Cheater" (Issue 3)
"A Young Man with Prospects" (Issue 4)
"The Gold Bug" (Issue 5)
"Ender's Stocking" (Issue 6)
"Ender's Homecoming" (Issue 7)
"Ender in Flight" (Issue 8 )

The book Orson Scott Card's InterGalactic Medicine Show contains:
"Mazer in Prison"

Then the story started at Chapter 14 from "In all the years..." to "...see a bull", although some words are added or omitted. All of Chapter 15 except the email are part of the short story, though some wording is different. Chapter 16 from "Nice larva," to "They took turns carrying food to the larva", then "Ender Wiggin," to "...rudimentary images" are also part of the short story. The short story ends with 7-8 paragraphs not included in Ender in Exile.

"Ender's Stocking"
- First published in Issue 6 of the online magazine InterGalactic Medicine Show in October 2007
- Chapter 2 of A War of Gifts tells the first two-fifths of the original short story
- At the end of the chapter, Peter calls the coin a "Fiver" instead of a "Nickel" like in the online magazine

"Ender's Homecoming"
- First published in Issue 7 of the online magazine InterGalactic Medicine Show in January 2008

Chapter 7 from "At the bottom of the ladderway..." to the end of Chapter 7 is part of the short story. All of Chapter 8 and 9 except the emails are part of the short story as well. There are then 6 paragraphs unique to "Ender in Flight" followed by Chapter 16 after the email to "Let's get back to it!"

"Renegat"
- Made available to subscribers of Uncle Orson on the Fly, but first published in Infinite Stars on October 17, 2017.

Here is an Ender timeline I'm working on. It is based off of the one currently on Wikipedia. Let me know what you think, if there needs to be changes, thoughts on level of canon, etc. The short story "Ender's Game" is not included.

Well this is awesome.
100% agreed. Color coding is great. Great way to show the different mediums. I didn't look too closely at title order but it didn't look off to me from what I recall.

Great job!

Well, I learned something new from this. I had no idea that there was a SftD comic.

The only thing that I could think of was that Ender's Game was also a short story as well. But, I agree with the rest, pretty sweet chart.
