Performance without Anxiety

Postby Caspian » Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:30 pm

Jayelle gave me a ukulele for an early birthday present, and although I play other instruments, there's just something about this one that makes me want to make silly videos of myself.

So. I'm going to post videos of myself playing the ukulele, and I will take requests of what to play next. Hopefully I'll get better, and we'll all have fun.

Also, I know I'm not the only musician on the board, some of you are much better than I am, so if you want to join in with your own performance, please do.

Here's my first one. Apologies for poor video and sound quality, but I can only work with what I have.

I play other instruments

I don't remember what this would include, if you've said on the board before, so remind me, please?

As for requests, I loved the version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow I heard on ukulele; always up for that again.

Also, any attempts at this, but maybe a leeeetle longer would be seriously cool.

Some Beatles song! I love Beatles on uke. It's so good.

If I was more confident in my ability to learn a piano song and be able to sing it, I would work toward contributing to this thread.

That song is, like, 90% of the reason I got him the ukulele in the first place.

my wife wouldn't let me spend money on a good ukulele while we were actually IN hawaii.

she wouldn't let me get a replica magnum P.I. hawaiian shirt either.

Is it blasphemous of me to say I like it better than the Judy Garland version, which I also really love?

Not at all. Bruddah Iz was a genius.

Also, G D, I play guitar, piano, violin, and flute. But I don't actually have either my violin or my flute here with me in Newfoundland, and we don't have a piano either.

Fantastic! Anyone who doesn't think that is a charming version of the song is crazy.

Questions time now. How long did it take you to learn it? By ear or sheet music? Did you know you are awesome?

It only took about half an hour to learn the ukulele part, and of course I already knew the singing part. But putting them together took a few hours of practicing, spread over several days. It's a surprisingly difficult song to sing, and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a really amazing singer, so I had to just accept the fact that I'm never going to sound as good as him.

I didn't use sheet music or learn it entirely by ear. I just googled "Somewhere over the rainbow chords" and played the chords that came up.

Yes I know I am awesome.

I'm working on a Beatles song for you Mich -- unsurprisingly Beatles songs are usually harder than they look.

In the mean time, here's one nobody requested:

It is quite unsurprising.

In the meantime, "Over the Rainbow" was excellent, as is this current one.

We should seriously have more submissions besides Paul, too! That'd be awesome. I'm loving the concept of this thread.

My Grandpa celebrated his 97th birthday on sunday. We formed a Cousin Choir to surprise him, grandma and all of our parents in their Sacrament Meeting (our main church meeting). Afterward, we went and recorded it. Here it is:

Seconded. I think if my family tried this it would sound...significantly less lovely.

As requested by Mich: Beatles songs.

Because it took me so long, I made two videos. The first one is the one I originally wanted to do, and is my favourite Beatles song. The second one is another Beatles song that I suddenly realized was WAY easier to play. So you get both.

Beatles!

We Can Work It Out might be a top five favorite for me, which is saying a lot. All You Need Is Love is a classic. Well done on both accounts!
