To say reaching the kids at my branch (for reading related purposes) is a challenge is sugar-coating it. The parents who even bother to show up with their kids largely herd them over to the DVDs, grab the max, and then leave. The kids who are there alone (most of them, neighborhood kids typically though I've seen some parents drop them off in the parking lot) go straight for the computers.
So when I had some kids rush into the library this last work week, excitedly telling me all about the books they read and the books they were going to get this time -followed by mom telling me how disappointed they were to have missed me the week before- well, dammit, I love it to pieces. The same kids had been a bit, I don't know, scared or cautious around me before but somehow, I got them to relax and feel comfortable. It's amazing.
I also love seeing holes open up in my display shelves and realizing those items aren't waiting in the "looked at" basket, that someone actually checked them out. Same with the shelves getting noticeably emptier. And I guess the same can be said with my to-be-shelved books piling up on me; at least it means they checked all those books out, right?

From today's Brown v. Entertainment Merchants (the violent video game case):
Reading Dante is unquestionably more cultured and intellectually edifying than playing Mortal Kombat. But these cultural and intellectual differences are not constitutional ones. Crudely violent video games, tawdry TV shows, and cheap novels and magazines are no less forms of speech than The Divine Comedy, and restrictions upon them must survive strict scrutiny.
Step softly; a dream lies buried here.

Pweb has been so busy today that it reminded me of when I first joined. This is awesome!

Much better than my attempt. I pretty much looked at it, realized how artifact-riddled it was, and realized I would try for about an hour before realizing I would never live up to my expectations.I tried:One of the photoshop monkeys should give that thing a transparent background so it looks like it's stamped directly onto the board.
Of course, I could have just remade it as a .png... but that wasn't the challenge, was it?

That looks pretty good! I'm sure you put way more effort into it than I did the original. (<--I stole an image and added pweb to it.)I tried:One of the photoshop monkeys should give that thing a transparent background so it looks like it's stamped directly onto the board.

*double post!*
It's crazy how busy it's been!! (Although, Brian's a little annoyed with how long I'm spending on pweb, especially since he thinks the busy is my fault from the post pledge that I made. I just need to get him to join in the fun!)Pweb has been so busy today that it reminded me of when I first joined. This is awesome!

In an effort to increase positive thinking in my life, I've decided to post at least two things I love for everything I hate.
I love the random rainstorm that ended right now.
I love my anatomy class. Who knew my body was so cool?

I used to hate gravity because it would not let me fly. Now I realize it is gravity that lets me stand.

I have been watching this set of drinking glasses in a little shop downtown for months. After weeks of not going in we decided to stop by today to do some birthday shopping for my best friend. The glasses were gone.
Then I remembered they had a clearance room and took a quick peek, and they had two left! Even better, I got both of them for the price of just one : )

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,

You guys are the best. Seriously. Thank you for the time-intensive effort. Hopefully Jan has good news when she comes back, and that will mean different registration protocol, so you don't have to waste any more time on this garbage.I think we got most of them now.

Blueberries, strawberries, and peaches. Also, anything blueberry flavored. Blueberry Muffin Frosted Mini-Wheats are a new favorite cereal.

The strawberries bit made me think of smoothies and I'd kill for an ice cold strawberry-banana smoothie right about now.
Or an Oreo blizzard.
Mostly, I can pretend the smoothie is healthier for me, even though I am not too sure it is.

Firefly. I have not watched it in ages. There's a marathon on. I had forgotten what a great, great show it is.
And no time for Whedon to pull his famed "Hey, you like that? You think they're gonna be happy? Well, watch this, suckers!" Not that I don't wish it had gone on longer. However, I'm kind of glad that if they were going to cut it short, they cut it short before any of that sort of thing happened.
