Terrible Gifts
I take the giving of gifts very seriously. The present should be something that the recipient loves. It should fit their personality and show a little bit of mine, as well. Some people don't take the same care when giving presents. They are either thoughtless or based completely on the giver's personality, not the recipient's. Do you know someone like that?
Here was my birthday gift from my mother-in-law:
Giant Water Sock
Bacteria and Viruses like to hide on particles. You need to take the particles out of the water before you treat it with iodine or chlorine. You can do this with a giant water sock.
This filter sock and a bottle of polar pure are great additions to your 72-hour kit or backpacking gear. Using these two items together will make your water safe to drink.
Another use for the sock is to help preserve the life of your ceramic filter. Pre-filter your water before you put water in the gravity water filter.
DO NOT use this filter sock as a stand-alone filter. The sock will filter water down to 1 micron. It is 10 wide inches and 30 inches long.
Seriously? I love my mil and she's very into food storage and emergency preparedness (which is not a bad thing), but SERIOUSLY? I smiled and said thanks, but I've been wondering ever since receiving it: why in the world did she think that it would be a good birthday present for ME!?!

This is such a great thread idea! Nothing comes to mind at the moment, but I know I've been given some truly unsuitable gifts in the past (and have always accepted them gratefully, I hope, and then perhaps quietly disposed of them in private).
you snooze, you lose
well I have snozzed and lost
I'm pushing through
I'll disregard the cost
I hear the bells
so fascinating and
I'll slug it out
I'm sick of waiting
and I can
hear the bells are
ringing joyful and triumphant

Are you guys... backwoods campers? I would think that with 3 kids, that would be...difficult. Very weird gift.
My aunt is VERY into cats. I like cats, the actual animal, but I don't care about stuff with cats on it.
Nevertheless, for some reason, I am the "cat person" in my aunt's mind and so she sends and gives me all sorts of cat crap.
Fortunately, this had a benefit for me recently. She gave me these three figurines in their original boxes, and I was able to sell them on ebay for $40 each.

Cat figurines are cool and all...
One really bad gift that my sister once received was a box of chocolates... That had been opened and eaten out of, then rewrapped to make a birthday gift for her. Yeah... The chocolates were still good and all, though.

I was once given a little, four piece Reese's Peanut Butter Cup (my least favorite candy, I seriously hate them) heart for valentine's day. It had been expired from the year before.

I once gave my friend 2 dollars for his birthday, a weak gift in and of itself.
He turned around and gave me one of my dollars back, as his birthday gift to me. (Same birthday)

In my family, such gifts are known as "a red vase", especially in regards to wedding presents, because it's a known fact that every wedding has to have at least one hideous and/or inappropriate gift, and for my parents it was an ugly red vase. My older sister got an ugly punchbowl (no ladle or cups to go with, plus she already had a punchbowl and the gifter knew it).
Actually, I think Rei and I escaped the red vase. Probably this was because our very, very small wedding was composed of people who really knew us well.

I have seen the banana cases in stores before, and they are quite absurd, although I can see why one might have one, assuming they have bananas often.

What I don't get about the banana thingy is that bananas come in all sorts of shapes and sizes! That thing has a curve in a specific place - what if my banana doesn't curve that way?
(and yes, feel free to read that with tons of innuendo)
Also... the I HATE that picture of the Peekaru! If you look on the actual site, it looks way more normal! The baby's head is supposed to be completely out. And as someone who straps her baby to her in a cold climate, I would totally love one.

But yes, that is exactly my problem with the banana thing. We had a banana slicer when I was growing up, just a plastic thing with plastic blades, and it never actually fit our bananas.

That made me feel immature, like I got caught with my hand in the cookie jar. I was just starting to chuckle, too. Hmph. That thing has a curve in a specific place - what if my banana doesn't curve that way?

The banana thing was apparently invented by a bunch of university researchers out here on the west coast. They were researching something banana-related, and found their specimens kept getting smooshed. I think either the banana or the case will bend to accommodate.
Related, did anybody else's mom ever poke a pin through the banana peel while the whole banana was intact and use it to slice the banana into rings, undetectedly, so that when you peeled it, the whole fruit fell apart? Because my mom did that to us once in elementary school, and it was quite the surprise.
I am totally going to go violate me some bananas at work tonight.

Mission accomplished! I got one of the residents (a real joker) involved, and we invisibly sliced 3 bananas to freak out the morning staff. It's perfect, too, because today was grocery day and there were a couple slightly older bananas kicking around, with brown specks (perfect for hiding pinpricks!), and they'll be eaten first.I am totally going to go violate me some bananas at work tonight.
