The Alvin Maker series (like any long series) does drag on a bit at some points, but overall it's a really good series, definitely worth reading.

If you're a history buff (as I am), definitely read the Alvin Maker series. It's entertaining to see the ways in which the books both depart from history and join up in interesting ways. Plus I love the entire fantasy/magical element of "knacks". It's very believable. The series is a fun read.

I highly recommend checking out the Alvin Maker series. Like above, it's awesome to see where he takes historical figures. Just imagine if the entire continent was colonized by a completely different group of people for a while. Some of the plot twists are great, too. It lacks the emotion of the Ender series, I'd say, but if you could put that aside long enough to read Bean's saga (except for Ender's Shadow and the very end of Shadow of the Giant), you should be fine.
