OoOoh, and Ender book I haven't read!!! *rushes to order it from Library*
I read the exceprt on Amazon. It seems ok, but people have used the words "heartwarming" to discribe it, so, well....grrr.
Wouldn't surprise me a bit.I'm just waiting for him to make the big announcement that Graff is gay.

Well, I saw "A War of Gifts" (aka "Christmas at Battleschool") at Borders the other day so I actually sat down in one of those cushy chairs right in the store and read it... I had time to kill. Anyway, to make a short story short... it was not as bad as I had expected, but then again, I did NOT buy it. It was, um, not worth $12.95 or whatever they were charging, but I am glad I read it.

So I got it from the library and finished it in an hour. The prose and Characters were great, as usual, but it wasn't as good as the rest of the Ender books. I think the best part was the "Ender's Stocking" chapter. The rest was interesting, and it kept me reading, but I wouldn't pay 13 bucks for it. Still, it made me think, as Card usually does. I give it 3 stars.

It's not spam. It's not clogging the boards, hawking something, and 3nder has posted elsewhere.
It may be irrelevant (it's hard to tell, since I can't figure out what it's supposed to mean), but it's not spam.

Ah, right then.

Your sig doesn't say that Anthony Perkins is cute, it says that Norman Bates is cute. Big difference. And neither has anything to do with the merits of Psycho as a movie. And none of this has anything to do with this thread.

I read it today after getting it from the library. Seriously, I wanted to throw up afterward. Plus, I hate it when authors publish a short story so that it takes up 120 pages and it clearly should be about 25. I guess that's the only way he could sell it for $12.95 or whatever ridiculous price it is.
I liked First Meetings and I'm looking forward to Keeper of Dreams, but no way should Card have published this story alone.
The rest of my winter break will be filled with lots of re-reads.

It truly wasn't up to Card's normal standard. I could actually believe these children were 6-12 years old. Normally, it seems impossible that they be so intelligent at such a young age, but it took far less effort to imagine it this time.
Also, Ender's and Dink's characters seemed off to me. They seemed.. less mature, which I suppose could be why they seemed less intelligent.
It was a nice, quick read and had it been another author, I most likely would not have been disappointed.

I got this book for Christmas. I liked it.
When I was reading it, I also felt like I could believe these actually were kids. But that was something that I liked about it. But I still thought they were geniuses. For example, Dink analyzing his first meeting with Ender (who but a genius would do that?), and then feeling sad because Santa can't make it to battle school. (who but a kid would feel that?)
I also liked reading more about Peter (and his mom)
I mostly liked that once again, Ender saves the day. He's my hero.
Graff: Ender is our only hope against the Christian Sociopath!
Dink: Uh... you mean the buggers, right?
Graff: Huh? Oh, right. Them too.

I dont know what you guys are all pissed about? its not like he wrote it to be a sequel or a new book. Its just a novelette that he put together for Christmas. Fan Fiction it might be, but who do you think is his biggest fan? Probably himself. After all, who reaps the benefits more than him? Maybe his publisher, but I'm betting him. I think it was an ok addition, even though I didnt really like the character of Zeck, who is kind of the basis for the story. As I said in the other thread on this subject, it is really Dink who makes the story work, and I am glad to see Dink in a different light. It explains his character more. But if you guys were expecting a new chapter in the Ender saga, I dont think thats what Card planned for. I think he just wanted to surprise his readers for Christmas. And maybe make up for the TV special we were supposed to see two years ago.
(no, i didnt need the double post, but everyone here seems to hate this new novelette and seemed to think it was a new epic work of fiction.)
