Songs that remind you of Ender's Game (or lyrics)

Postby Seiryu » Sun Jan 07, 2007 8:46 am

I was sitting there, thinking about this song called "They Might Be Giants" by They Might Be Giants, and I kept thinking about these spoken lines:

To make the merry-go-round go faster
So that everyone needs to hang on tighter
Just to keep from being thrown to the wolves

and I had realized that it reminded me of the wolf children. It would make sense because that part of the game took place on a playground. I don't know, maybe I'm thinking too much about it, but I just think of Ender's Game every time I hear the song.

Don't ask me why... "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" by Judas Priest.

One life I'm gonna live it up
I'm takin' flight I said i'll never get enough
Stand tall I'm young and kinda proud
I'm on top as long as the music's loud

If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another thing comin'

That's right here's where the talkin' ends
Well listen this night there'll be some action spent
Drive hard I'm callin' all the shots
I got an ace card comin' down on the rocks

If you think I'll sit around while you chip away my brain
Listen I ain't foolin' and you'd better think again
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You got another thing comin

In this world we're livin' in we have our share of sorrow
Answer now is don't give in aim for a new tomorrow

Oh so hot no time to take a rest yeah
Act tough ain't room for second best
Real strong got me some security
Hey I'm a big smash I'm goin' for infinity yeah

If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another thing comin'

Think it explains itself.
Fight the machine!

It's a bit of a stretch, but I can see the connection.

If I remember right, Seiryu, one of the peculiarities of the playground for Ender was the merry-go-round. He tried to ride on it but when it got up to speed his handhold became insubstantial and he flew off.

I still harbor the idea that A Perfect Circle's song Pet is based on Shadow of the Hegemon.

Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window
Go back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble

Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind what other voices say
They don't care about you, like I do, like I do
Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils,
See, they don't give a f*** about you, like I do.

Just stay with me, safe and ignorant,
Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
Count the bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble

Head down, go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and all your demons

I'll be the one to protect you from
A will to survive and a voice of reason

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choice assignments
They're one in the same
I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself

Swayin to the rhythm of the new world order and
Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums

The boogeyman comin'
The boogeyman comin'

Keep your head down, go to sleep, to the rhythm of a war drums

Stay with me
Safe and ignorant
Just stay with me
Hold you and protect you from the other ones
The evil one
The lucky son
Go back to sleep

The lyrics above are what I heard when the idea popped into my head. They're not considered accurate and I don't hear "choice assignments" anymore but I still like this connection. And besides, MJK so tight lipped about his words it's anyone's guess.

I imagine the song being sung from Achilles to Petra, who he sometimes called Pet.

There's actually a heavy metal group called Orphanage, and they're last song on their last record is called Ender's Game. It's kinda dumb..but hell it's Ender's Game!! Check out the lyrics

Again, I disparage myself by bringing up Gatsby's American Dream. Their albums tend to be focused on a specific subject with a whole bunch of pop culture references thrown in, but "Giant's Drink" off of Volcano seems to be pretty much about EG:

"I just see a little baby boy
Who won't admit that he fought so, oh
He's looking for the fire and the fury it takes to be a man
But I just see a little baby boy "

Among others. The bridge sounds like Ender's relationship with Val, and this last verse sounds suspiciously like Ender just before leaving Earth for good:

"I've got a secret
And you've got a problem
I'll disappear, oh, I'll disappear"

And then, of course, there's the song "Speaker for the Dead" off of the same album, but I don't think that's as explicit, more of a similar concept.

Sad that I make a post after months of silence just to plug one of my favorite bands :p
Shell the unshellable, crawl the uncrawlible.

Row--row.

I thought the lyrics were a bit different for "The Giant's Drink," I can't remember though. The first verse of it also makes a lot of sense too. I'd go look for it, but being in a hurry I can't. And then there's their other song about SftD.. I really liked how they compare it to an island.

Well, there's "Don't Give Up" by Phil Collins:
In this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good

though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we'd be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn

drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground

don't give up
you still have us
don't give up
we don't need much of anything
don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong

rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing

moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs

don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
no reason to be ashamed
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up now
we're proud of who you are
don't give up
you know it's never been easy
don't give up
'cause I believe there's the a place
there's a place where we belong
And, of course, "Ender's Game" by Ashcan Painters:
Ender's waiting at the bus stop
He left the school just after five
His bloodied hands still held the memory
Of one last schoolyard fight
World leaders watching from a distance
Hoping that this third time's the charm
What's the point in games of buggery
If the weapon's never armed

What's the use in going home
If Ender goes alone.
What's the use in going home
If Ender goes alone.

Ender's walking through the station
Always wondering about the time
As he's mastering the war games
Another birthday flutters by

Old men sit nervous at the viewscreens
All awaiting the command
A tiny twelve year old who doesn't know
The power in his hand

Ender does just what they say
Ender does just what they say
He's getting better every day
He's getting better every day
Ender doesn't want to play
He doesn't want to play
He doesn't want to play

But still they fill his mind with
Playground fights and weaponry,
Counterstrikes and strategy
It's bleeding into apathy
They won't let him go and so he

Takes his losses, turns them round
And burns their cities to the ground
And never speaks his heart aloud again

It's not the world he used to know,
But Ender's going home
It's not the world he used to know,
But Ender's going home
(I got that from: http://enderseries.tripod.com/ )

Ender will save us all by Dashboard Confesional...

The song doesn't really remind me of Ender...but I remember being amused when I first learned the title...

The diary of Jane lyrics seem vague enough to be about anything. If I remember right DC's lead singer's middle name is Ender. The song is about him reuniting with a childhood friend because of the book.

Yeah I think you are right...I knew the song had nothing to do with Ender's game but I thought the title was connected to the book in someway even though his middle name is Ender...

Apologize by Timbaland

i think it like sort of represents how he feels towards either the hive queen or graff

because its saying "its too late to apologize" could be out of anger to graff or hes saying its too late to apologize to the hive queen

'm holding on your rope
Got me ten feet off the ground
And I'm hearing what you say
But I just can't make a sound
You tell me that you need me
Then you go and cut me down
But wait...
You tell me that you're sorry
Didn't think I'd turn around and say...

That it's too late to apologize, it's too late
I said it's too late to apologize, it's too late

I'd take another chance, take a fall, take a shot for you
And I need you like a heart needs a beat
(But that's nothing new)
Yeah yeah

I loved you with a fire red, now it's turning blue
And you say
"Sorry" like the angel heaven let me think was you
But I'm afraid...

It's too late to apologize, it's too late
I said it's too late to apologize, it's too late
Woahooo woah

It's too late to apologize, it's too late
I said it's too late to apologize, it's too late
I said it's too late to apologize, yeah yeah
I said it's too late to apologize, a yeah

I'm holding your rope
Got me ten feet off the ground...

is all muse to me!
Muse - Starlight
here are the lyrics:

Far away
This ship has taken me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

Starlight
I will be chasing a starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms

My life
You electrify my life
Lets conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive

I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
[Starlight lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms

Far away
The ship has taken me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

And I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations, yeah
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold
You in my arms
I just wanted to hold

"far away from my memories... of the people who care if i live or die"
Valentine...

its hard but...

and vindicated made me think on Ender too

Dashboard Confessionals - Vindicated:

Hope dangles on a string
Like slow spinning redemption
Winding in and winding out
The shine of it has caught my eye

And roped me in
So, mesmerizing, so hypnotizing,
I am captivated, I am

{Chorus}
Vindicated
I am selfish
I am wrong
I am right
I swear I'm right
Swear I knew it all along
And I am flawed, but I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

So clear
Like the diamond in your ring
Cut to mirror your intention
Oversized and overwhelmed
The shine of which has caught my eye
And rendered me
So isolated, so motivated
I am certain now that I am

{Chorus}

So turn
up the corners of your lips
Part them and feel my finger tips
Trace the moment fall forever

Defense is paper thin
Just one touch and I'll be in
Too deep now to ever swim against the current
So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip against the current
So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip away
So let me slip away

{Chorus}

Slight hope
dangles on a string
Like slow spinning redemption...

From Yesterday

Postby SaintDrogo » Sat Jan 12, 2008 2:18 pm

Hello all, this is my first post, but this song has reminded me of Ender since the first time I heard it. It's "From Yesterday" by 30 Seconds To Mars. Definitely worth checking out, and the video is beautiful.

He's a stranger to some
And a vision to none
He can never get enough,
Get enough of the one

For a fortune he'd quit
But it's hard to admit
How it ends and begins
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)
From yesterday, it's coming!
From yesterday, the fear!
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message here

On a mountain he sits, not of gold but of sin
through the blood he can learn, see the life that he turns
From a council of one
He'll decide when he's done with the innocent

Oh his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)

Oh his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)

From yesterday, it's coming!
From yesterday, the fear!
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message
he doesn't want to read the message
But he doesn't want to read the message here

On his face is a map of the world

From yesterday, it's coming!
From yesterday, the fear!
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message here
From yesterday,
From yesterday,
From yesterday, the fear
From yesterday,
From yesterday,
But he doesn't want to read the message
he doesn't want to read the message
he doesnt want to read the message here

With everything in Children of the Mind being all abstract and theoretical, all of Circa Survive's lyrics put me in the same state of mind that said book does. For example:

You are in my dreams
Half human, half machine
You are someone else that I have felt and seen
I cannot rest on my consciousness contest
Looking right through the lens
From winter brings the spring again

Infinite silence
Rolling, riding with the dawn
This is wrong, this is wrong
And I cannot sleep without the radio on

And we fall asleep again with testament
So please let the cleaning begin
Evolution
80% rad, 20% kick-ass, 10% win. I give 110% to being awesome.

I think that the song "In My Place" by Coldplay perfectly captures the experience of being at Battle School:
coldplay in my place

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
I was lost, oh, yeah

And I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed
I was lost, oh yeah

And yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Yeah, how long must you pay for it?
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Oh, for it

I was scared, I was scared
Tired and under prepared
But I wait for you

And if you go, if you go
Leave me down here on my own
But I'll wait for it, yeah

Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Yeah, how long must you pay for it?
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Oh, for it

Sing it please, please, please
Come back and sing to me
To me, me

Come on and sing it out, now, now
Come on and sing it out
To me, me
Come back and sing

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
And I was lost, oh, yeah
Oh, yeah
This is the room of the wolfmother wallpaper.

I think the song Frontline by Pillar remind me of battle school
It’s not like I’m walking alone into the valley of the shadow of death
Stand beside one another, ‘cause it ain’t over yet
I’d be willing to bet that if we don’t back down
You and I will be the ones that are holding the Crown in the end
When it’s over, we can say, “Well done”
But not yet, ‘cause it’s only begun
So, pick up, and follow me, we’re the only ones
To fight this thing, until we’ve won
We drive on and don’t look back
It doesn’t mean we can’t learn from our past
All the things that we mighta done wrong
We could’ve been doing this all along

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We’re on the frontline

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We’re on the frontline

And we’ll be carrying on, until the day it doesn’t matter anymore
Step aside, you forgot what this is for
We fight to live, we live to fight
And tonight, you’ll hear my battle cry
We live our lives on the frontlines
We’re not afraid of the fast times
These days have opened up my eyes
And now, I see where the threat lies

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We’re on the frontline

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We’re on the frontline

(We live our lives on the frontline,
We're not afraid of the fast times)x2

We’ve got to lead the way
We've got to lead the way

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We’re on the frontline

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We’re on the frontline

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Stand aside, on the frontline

Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry
Everybody, with your fists raised high
Let me hear your battle cry tonight
Stand beside, or step aside
We’re on the frontline

I don't know why but every time I hear it I think of Enders Game.

+44 LYRICS

"Little Death"

Please sleep, my darling, sleep
Your cry for inspiration
Never reaches ears on distant stars
And every night our lonely planet
Slides across the universe
And I won't pretend I understand

Please sleep, my darling, sleep
Your death by information
Won't disturb the peace on distant stars
And even when you lock the doors
And slide behind the unlit shades
None of us are strangers anymore

Fall asleep with the windows open
Come to me with the worst you've said and done
You'll close your eyes and see me
A little death makes life more meaningful
I stand no chance at all

Please, sleep my darling, sleep
Your car crash in slow motion
Won't upset the pace on distant stars
And one by one the years of our lives
Stumble as the moments pass
So please hold on, so please hold on

So fall asleep with the windows open
Come to me with the worst you've said and done
You'll close your eyes and see me
A little death makes life more meaningful
I stand no chance at all

Please, sleep my darling, sleep
Please, sleep my darling, sleep

So fall asleep with the windows open
Come to me with the worst you've said and done
You'll close your eyes and see me
A little death makes life more meaningful
I stand no chance at all

Brothers in Arms--Dire Straits

Postby keats » Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:21 am

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
Ive watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

Theres so many different worlds
So many differents suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the suns gone to hell
And the moons riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every (k)night has to die
But its written in the stars
And every line on your palm
We are fools to make war
On our brothers in arms
Here lies one whose name was writ in water.

Look Around

Postby John Locke » Fri Mar 07, 2008 9:52 am

Look Around by the famous singer-songwriter Will Rogers.
It laments the loss of nature on Earth. One reason Ender wanted to save Earth was because of the visit to nature Graff took him on. Also, there are several allusions later to the projects of desalinization in Africa, and restoring Earth to her natural beauty.
Anyone want to be my Demosthenes?
"And what in the name of Merlin's most baggy Y Fronts was that about?"
I just want an "enemy" to create an ongoing political debate that will give both of us respect and a following for peace.

This part of neverender by coheed and cambria reminds me of how Ender felt about the Hive Queen after believing he destroyed her.

when you've gone about things all wrong
bury them here,
with the lifetime you would never regret
in savoring sleep,
what do you mean i toss
and turn everywhere?
i'll miss you when you're gone
in pretending that you meant
the world to me
with that you'd call me a liar
and in the making mistakes
you'll rest incomplete

Brokedown Palace- Grateful Dead

It remindes me of the later speaker novels, where he settles down on Lusitania.

Brokedown Palace

Fare you well, my honey, fare you well my only true one.
All the birds that were singing are flown, except you alone.

Going to leave this brokedown palace,
On my hand and knees, I will roll, roll, roll.
Make myself a bed in the waterside,
In my time, I will roll, roll roll.

In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head.
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

River going to take me, sing sweet and sleepy,
Sing me sweet and sleepy all the way back home.
Its a far gone lullaby, sung many years ago.
Mama, mama many worlds Ive come since I first left home.

Goin home, goin home, by the riverside I will rest my bones,
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

Going to plant a weeping willow,
On the banks green edge it will grow, grow, grow.
Sing a lullaby beside the water,
Lovers come and go, the river roll, roll, roll.

Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell,
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

OK, so last summer, my nephew left for Nigeria and I picked up his copy of EG. Around the same time, I downloaded Karma by Delerium, a "band" whose remixes I heard all the time (being a trance listener) but I had never heard the originals.

I was hooked on both. Over the next month I burned through the Ender series while Delerium was on super-heavy rotation in my MP3 player (Delerium was pretty much the only band I listened to for about 8 weeks... just couldn't get enough of them.)

Result: whenever I hear any Delerium album--particularly Karma, Chimera, Poem or Fauxliage--I pretty much can't help but think of Ender. They are inextricably linked in my mind.

Even now, whenever I pick up an Ender book to read, it's always with Delerium cued up on my Zune.

There aren't any Delerium lyrics that remind me of specific scenes in Ender, it's just coincidental that I "discovered" both at roughly the same time and got hooked on both.

'I Will Follow You Into The Dark' by Death Cab for Cutie always reminded me of Bean and Petra. I could always picture Bean saying this, or maybe Petra.

Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NO's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NO's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
The blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NO's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark

Unzerbrechlich by Madsen (mostly the chorus):

Du bist unzerbrechlich
Du bist groß, stark und mächtig
Nichts in dieser Welt macht dich kaputt!
Du bist unzerbrechlich
Du bist groß, stark und mächtig
Nichts in dieser Welt stoppt deine Wut!

The song "Fix You" by Coldplay reminds me of the parts of SftD where Ender is mending Nova's "broken family" and the troubles of the town of Milagre.

And a song that makes me think of Ender and where his mindset would have been during the last stages (dreams) and after the Bugger War is "In the Crossfire" by Starsailor:

I don't see myself when I look in the mirror
I see who I should be
I don't see myself when I look in your eyes
Thank God for that

I don't see myself when I look cross the river
I see where I should be
I don't see myself when I look from the sky
Thank God for that

I hear them scream, woooo
On the radio
It's getting louder in the crossfire
Tryin' to find some hope
From the ashes of their broken home

I don't see myself when they fail to deliver
I see what I should be
I don't see myself when I look when I look at the flag
Thank God for that

I hear them scream, woooo
On the radio
It's getting louder in the crossfire
Tryin' to find some hope
Our day will come
Well find the sun
Well find the fire
Well set a fire the love we give
Our one desire

I hear them scream, woooo
On the radio
It's getting louder in the crossfire
Tryin' to find some hope

I hear them scream, woooo
On the radio
It's getting louder in the crossfire
Tryin' to find some hope
From the ashes of their broken home

I don't see myself when I look in the mirror
