I just saw today that my name shows up in the book, too. This is the second time I've unexpectedly shown up in the thanks in an Ender book.

Seeing Adam and Nathan's timeline in there did bring back memories, though. I remember looking at the original of that back in the day, as they were tweaking it.

I got mine for Christmas today.

I haven't gotten very far, so I haven't read any of the essays, but I do have two questions:

1. Why does the writer use the word "via" so much? There are other words...

2. It says Ambul AND Crazy Tom had a reputation for throwing tantrums when receiving a stupid order. I though it was just Crazy Tom(earning his name) who did that. So why is that in Ambuls profile?

Ender's Shadow, p. 367:
Bean pointed to Ambul, a Thai soldier who, according to what Bean read in the student reports, would have been a toon leader long ago, except for his tendency to disobey stupid orders.

I bought it yesterday and flipped through it. I liked the section about the trouble bringing the Ender's Game Movie to screen. It is a little irritating how the author always takes the side of OSC, but then again, it doesn't surprise me, and some of the changes sound ridiculous.

Wait, are the short stories in the Companion?

I don't want to skip ahead and check because I want to read the whole thing through.

No, the Companion has entries on the characters, the slang, the Battle School, the stories/books, the Hundred Worlds, and a lot of other topics. It doesn't have the whole text of the stories, rather it provides a summary.

I won't be able to buy it until this summer... or I can ask my mom for it for my birthday... or hope the school library gets it.

I wanna read it cover to cover, but it's getting repetitive and I just bought EG, SD, and XN, so I wanna re-read those soon. Except my mom though it'd be great to throw a snowball at me and the snow got all over the books! She really should apologize. She doesn't understand how important my books are to me. :(

Heh, I bought an EG hardcover, SftD, XN, and CotM, but theres a big but... I don't get them until March 27 because I also preordered EG:CS HC (my paperbacks are easily wrecked, got to replace those). Oh, and I've only got $10 left to spend from now until summer break.

AHHH!! QUIT TORTURING ME!!!!

Braggy.

Okay, am I the only one who finds this idea for the ending of EG horribly funny?

" In one version, the I.F. is holding a banquet in Ender's honor after the war. Mazer steps to a podium and introduces Ender as their guest of honor. To everyone's surprise, Bean comes to the pulpit instead and Ender is nowhere to be found. Bean the proceeds to read a statement written by Ender in which Ender details his intent to carry the Formic cacoon to a safe planet and reintroduce the Formic species. At that moment, Ender takes off alone in a ship and flies overhead. Bean and everyone at the banquet LOOK HEAVENWARD AND WATCH ENDER FLY AWAY."

I laughed so hard when I read this.

That wasn't my intent. My intent was to explain why I couldn't get the AEC.

And that ending is funny, but I don't see it happening. Bean was put on a starship BEFORE Ender landed in Shakesphere. Nevertheless, it's great.

Oops. We are.

Anyway, I though the screen writer who described the hive queen as" a perfectly round, eyelese, limbless shape" pretty bizzare too.

Heh, it is bizarre, especially when the comics show a Formic's shape (I refer to them as Formics just because it sounds better to me). And the comic clearly shows that it isn't a sphere, it has eyes, and it has limbs, so it's awkward.

Hahahaha sphere. It's so ridiculous.

Oh, and don't forget the writer who wanted the monitor to be a BRACELET!!!!!

I actually haven't seen the comic formics.

Now thats awkward too. It's a thing in the back of Ender's neck that allows the IF to connect to Ender's brain (among others, I just put Ender here because I want to). And it causes horrendous pain when removed. How could Ender survive the removal of the monitor if the doctors made a mistake and rammed into a main artery?!?! And how could you connect to the brain without being close to the CNS (Central Nervous System).

Heh, this seems like uninformed people buying graphics cards.

Uninformed people buying graphics cards, a part of a computer. They go into a store, say Best Buy, and then buy the wrong cards. Eh, we're getting way off from EG... but this is how I can relate it. A salesperson says that since the 8800 GTS 640 MB (G80) has more memory than the 8800 GTS 512 MB (G92), the 640 MB version is better, and the average Joe buys the 640 MB 8800 GTS, while the 512 MB version has better performance. I know the language is bad, oh well...

Although I know how to build one, I'm not great at programming, oh well. But we need to relate this to Ender somehow... oh yeah, Ender used a desk, err, laptop computer.

Yeah. He did. And he did some neat tricks with it too. One writer wanted to take out the mind game completely except for one scene where Ender walks by a student in the game room who was playing it.

Hey, why isn't the forum called game room, instead of battle room? They don't play games in the battle room.

Didn't Ender say that everything that was important in Battle School was games? "They aren't studies, they're games." (EG 236)

Oh, okay. I thought it was Crazy Tom. As soon as I buy the book I need to re-read it.
See also:
Ender's Shadow, p. 223.
He went back and forth on a couple. Finally decided to include Crazy Tom, a veteran who held the unenviable record of being the most-transferred soldier in the history of the game who wasn't actually iced and sent home. So far. The thing was, Crazy Tom really was good. Sharp mind. But he couldn't stand it when somebody above him was stupid and unfair. And when he got pissed, he really went off. Ranting, throwing things, tearing bedding off every bed in his barracks once, another time writing a message about what an idiot his commander was and mailing it to every other student in the school. A few actually got it before the teachers intercepted it, and they said it was the hottest thing they ever read. Crazy Tom. Could be disruptive. But maybe he was just waiting for the right commander. He was in.
Step softly; a dream lies buried here.
