PWEB FAQ - If you're new, start here. (old)

Postby Hegemon » Sat Nov 04, 2006 10:03 pm

Since the new board is getting some brand new members and since we lost all the history stuff we used to have, I figured it would be a good idea to get an FAQ started and add to it as it goes along.

0)What's with that damn "Debug common Word List" error I get from time to time?
No idea, but it's really annoying isn't it? even we mods see it often. I generally post a second, 'bump' post after I get the error, and then delete the bump post. that way the thread gets knocked back to the top of the page, which it doesn't do under this crazy error. It might go away if we ever upgrade the VB software. :)

1) Who started PWEB and when?

The original set of mods were Taalcon, Locke, IdemosthenesI, Boothby, Ethan and Amka (formerly Jane). I believe it was opened on July 1st, 2000.

Around October or November of 2001 the original board crashed. Then once again, in September 2006 we had another crash.

2) Who are the current moderators?

Currently Amka, Boothby, Eaquae Legit, Jayelle, Locke, Oliver Dale, Taalcon and myself are moderators. Amka also runs the rest of the site and handles all the programming stuff.

Our book club mini-mods are Rei and Young Val.

3) What is a mini-mod?

A mini-mod is a moderator who only has moderator powers over a specific forum on the board. They are used in the forums that have more focused and guided discussions such as the book club. Although there are currently no plans to create more clubs, we are willing to consider it if we are given a good proposal.

4) What is the deal with limeade?

Limeade was first brought up in calvinball (a games thread). It is all related to the Canadian Alliance's lime tree and after that we got into the habit of giving it to new members. Traditionally only members of the CA would give it and I am not certain if that is still the case.

5) What is the deal with sushi?

Similar as above, but not calvinball or CA.

6) How do I make spoiler text?
True invisitype colors for the two background colors posts might be in: use (without spaces) [ color=#DEE3E7 ] and [ color=#EFEFEF ] use [ /color ] to turn invisitype off.

Some more FAQ:

What do the titles mean? I see Launchie, Soldier, Toon Leader, Commander, Speaker for the Dead...

The first four are for post count.
0-50 is Launchie
50-500 is Soldier
500+ is a Toon Leader
2000+ is Commander

Speaker for the Dead is a moderator
Bookish Chick and Bookish Lad are mini-mods (see Hegemon's post above)

So, what's the deal here? Everyone seems to call each other by many different names and it's hard to keep track!

Welcome to the Pweb family. We're a bit of a close-knit bunch. Many of us refer to each other by our real names, our AIM names, Screen names, old Screen names and a few of us have nicknames (some even have nicknames they don't want!) Stick around for awhile and you'll catch on, coming to the pweb chat on AIM helps a bit, too.

Why is everyone berating me for making a new thread?

Sometimes if a thread has been started several times or if there is already a well-established thread of the same topic, people can get a bit shirty about starting a new one.
Try searching (the search function at the top of the page) to find out if there already is a thread and then bump it.

What's the deal with people refering to Ye Olde Pweb and Pweb II?

This board is the third incarnation of Pweb, the previous two had crashes and all posts on them were lost. It was very traumatic for some of us, so please be sensitive. *sniffle*

More FAQ:

What happened to the main pages? When I google this site, it claims there's an encyclopedia and stuff, but when I come here, it's just a forum...

It died in the great crash of '06. It may be back eventually. The heart of this place has always been the forum, so it remains.

Why Should I listen to the Mods? This is a free country!

First off, what country? There are members here from all over the world. Secondly, the Mods rule is law. If a Mod tells you to stop doing something, listen to them. This is not a democracy.

What if I don't listen?

We've got a three-strikes, you're out policy around here. Three official warnings and then you're banned for one month. Three more warnings, and, well, you didn't really want to be here anyway, did you?

Why are people bugging me about my spelling/grammar/using allcaps/huge avatar/huge signature, etc?

It comes down to this - readability. When you spell things badly, when you use poor grammar, when your signature takes up three times the length of your post, it's annoying and makes it harder to understand you.
Plus, good grammar just makes you a better person.

To whom do we report if we think a mod is being unfair?

The other mods, if you really want. We tend to be in agreement about most things, so don't expect much, but feel free.

To whom do we report if we think a mod is being unfair?
You report it to the commoners by making a thread in Milagre and trying to rally support for a revolt. Sic semper tyrannis! (Edit: Used to say "Crush the oppressors!" "Sic semper tyrannis" works so much better here, even if it doesn't mean the same thing.)

The only problem with that being that the mods tend to be more fair-minded than the rest of us. Some of these kids should thank Her Holy Hooves that I don't have a modhammer.

It feels wrong to post in here, but I wasn't sure who exactly to ask in a PM (if it even matters).

Mods: If an established member wanted a username change, is it possible to change it and keep post counts or would a new account be needed?

(Feel more than free to delete this post and take it to PM.)

I answered in PM, but I'll answer to the community at large. Mods can change your username fairly easily. For me (not speaking for all mods, but I think they'd agree), I need a reasonable reason and it's likely to be done for a more well-established member.
Clearly, Alea met these specifications, so we had no trouble changing her name.

Or you just move everything to your save box since it doesn't appear to have a limit. Mine's 316% full.

Could you bump up the Sent folder limit too? That's the one that's always running out of room for me.

So what does this doohickey do?
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet him, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

Not sure where else to put this and I'm too annoyed to do a search.

In the space of about 5 minutes (how long it's taken me to be able to log in and get from the Index to Milagre), I must have seen this message about 60 times. Anyone else getting it?

from what I've seen on other forums, those types of errors are generally caused by threads that are over 300 or 400 posts. most forums now cap/lock their big ongoing threads after that many posts and start a new iteration of said thread every few days/weeks (depending on how active the thread is).

Also spoiler text / invisitype (courtesy of Rei) use (without spaces) [ color=#DEE3E7 ] and [ color=#EFEFEF ]

It's fairly unlikely. The original people who created it are mostly gone and the owner of this site has apparently stopped caring. So, we're a forum. Honestly, mostly full of olbies who've gotten a bit jaded towards OSC.

How do I post pictures?
You'll need to upload them to another site first. Sites like Flickr, Photobucket and TinyPic do it for free.

Here's a great step by step instruction:
1) Go to www.tinypic.com
2) Click the "Browse" button in the middle of the page, near the top.
3) Browse your computer and find the picture and click "Open"
4) Click the "Upload Now" button and wait.
5) When it finished, find the line "IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards"
6) Click the text box below that. It will automatically copy.
7) Go to make a new post and paste (ctrl+v or right click->paste) the line. It should look like:

Try not to post giant pictures, as they cause the whole thread to be big.

I'm wondering about the custom-titles, too. Some users have their own, some don't. Is that something from the older pweb, or can you still create your own title?
